The Down Side of Being A Physician Assistant

  • Peace be to you (AsSalama'laikum) all! I have been a medically licensed Physician Assistant for almost 16 years. I was asked to discuss this topic. I honestly can't accurately compare being a Physician Assistant to being a Doctor, because I haven't been an MD or DO. I only have three "cons" that I could consider: less money, less prestige, less autonomy, less knowledge (than the MD/DO). However the "pro" to this is: less student loan debt, less accountability, more time to engage in other aspects of one's life. PA vs MD/DO is a VERY personalized decision. I am a VERY dedicated family man. And have a great passion foe community service. I am also a fitness, science, and education enthusiast. Being a PA has allowed me to pursue these interest. I hope my circuitous answer helps some people make decisions about their academic choices and careers! I have REALLY enjoyed being a Physician Assistant for all these years! And amVERY grateful to my creator for guiding me to this AWESOME PROFESSION! I wisv you all the VERY best of succes in your positive endeavors! Please subscribe to my channel! Peace!

    The downside:
    - Your salary is capped compared to the corporate world, it won't keep up with the inflation. Lately salaries have been going down due to insurance reimbursement cuts. You'll work more for less pay the more you advance in your PA career.
    - Non-compete doesn't let you change jobs easily (you have to move and start over).
    - Staff will treat you with less respect compared to docs.
    - Patients will ask you when are you going to finish med school over and over.
    - You will have to see patients your doc doesn't want to see (medicaid, prisoners, etc).
    - You will be called "mid level" even after practicing for decades.
    The Up Side:
    - You will have amazing loyal patients who would never trade you for a physician.
    - You will learn medicine and it will improve your own life.
    - You will have job security (not your particular one, but in general the field is growing, including other countries).
    - You will spend a lot less time in school (no residency!)
    - You can change specialties more easily than docs if necessary.
    - You can work part-time and still have a decent income.

      You're right on point! I remember when I first made $100,000/ year. I thought that was SO much money! NOW, it's like, I could BARELY support my family on that. The houses in my neighborhood are going for more than $1 million. It's jacked my property taxes up. AND, my kids' college tuitions have skyrocketed. I don't see how folks are surviving on less than that. The demands are greater for us too (CDS, DEA, own malpractice, CMEs, etc.).

And, they STILL didn't get into PA school on the first try!😣 Other students got rejected from PA school but, got ACCEPTED to medical school!!😅 I'm SO HAPPY for you! Also, I never thought about the downsides of more autonomy 😯😯!! Thanks for mentioning that!! Furthermore, I never thought about the connection between nursing & getting a masters in Healthcare admin. I have my bachelors in healthcare admin but I'm having a hard time finding a job in my field, so I'm not sure if I would like the business side vs clinical side of healthcare 😪. Biochemp33 Greetings! While Pharm tech is great for familiarizing yourself with Pharmacy-knowledge you will DEFINITELY need in PA school-it does not help you garner the direct-patient-contact-hours you need for PA school. I would suggest keeping your PT job as a source of income but, complete a 6 week Certified Nursing Assistant or Phlebotomy program in the meantime. Also, find out the pre-reqs you need for the PA schools to which you plan to apply. I hope this helps. I wish you the VERY best of succes in your positive endeavors. J ScienceGirl It depends on what you want to do in the future! I would like to either be assistant director or chair of a PA program someday. The requirement for MANY schools is that the PA should have a Doctorate in a related field. Also, I think that PAs should pursue doctoral degrees because of our expanding roles in healthcare (e.g. clinical directors, principal investigators for research, program directors, etc.). It increases a PA's options, depth of knowledge, and skill set. I've been able to be considered for some AMAZING positions because I have a Doctorate of Health Education. While I do NOT think that PA programs should become obligatory doctoral program. I DO encourage PA to pursue a Doctorate in a related field (e.g. DHEd, Doctor of Health Science, PhD, etc.). I hope this answered your question. Peace!🤓

I’m getting a bachelors in zoology, and that’s kind of a possible back up plan if I can’t find a stable job as a wildlife biologist/ zoologist etc.but before applying to pa school ( for a masters) you need to have a experience in the healthcare industry right?

    • @OmarAbdulMalikDHEdMPASPACPAPro
      @OmarAbdulMalikDHEdMPASPACPAPro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Darkness Hi there! Thanks so much for watching and for your question. Yes, you have to direct-patient-contact-hours before you apply to PA school. The amount varies GREATLY by the school to which you apply. You can do a number of different health care jobs (e.g. CNA, phlebotomy, Patient Care Technician, etc.) which take a relatively short amount of time ( a few to several weeks) to complete. PLEASE...check with the school to which you are applying to see what they find acceptable. You know, I actually wanted to be a Zoologist and engage in field research as my career. My first degree is in Biology. I even got accepted to grad school. The thing is, that it pays such a SMALL amount (usually $40,000 to just under $60,000) even with a PhD and years of experience! This isn't bad if you're doing what you love and, are able to live VERY humbly. However, my Biologist friends have told me that it's very hard to make a living. You spend MUCH of your time writing grants and teaching to support yourself and are in constant fear of government or administrative budget cuts in your field (e.g. cuts in the Environmental Protection Agency, the Life Science Department at a university, etc.).

    • @thedarkness3371
      @thedarkness3371 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Omar Abdul-Malik DHEd, MPAS, PA-C very interesting. Yes I have done a decent amount of online research on the job prospects of being a wildlife biologist/ vet/ zoologist. And while I still fully intend to pursue it one day ( more likely being a zoologist or wildlife biologist),fully even if I do become a pa, (perhaps after I have saved up a hefty amount to account to the job instability), I am very reluctant and feel if I try to rely on that alone it will lead to a very rocky start and a unhappy time haha. I also have worked mostly minimum wage jobs most of my life while going to school so I’m kind of sick of making very little money to be honest. I think the wide range of flexibility in pa is another reason I’m interested, not a job where your doing the same thing everyday.

      Chan Nghiem A patient who had HUNDREDS of maggots in her wound and vagina!😨I had to keep very good composure when I saw them crawling out of her privates! The patient would not let nurses change her dressing on a wound she had in her inguinal fold. She was alert and oriented x 3 so they had to respect her autonomy. I had to actually implore her to allow ME to check her when she began complaining of discomfort in "That area"😳 She was chagrined of course, but finally agreed to a thorough cleaning of the area.

However, I was so happy to have made $35.00 during one!😅 That was almost 35 years ago. The Lord has brought me very far! I am VERY grateful!🙏🏾❤☝🏾️

      oldtimedrumcorps Yes. It's about $ 5,000 for a coverage of up to 1 million dollars. It covers malpractice. I'm considered a primary medical practitioner so my rates are less than say, a surgical or Ob/Gyn PA.

Unfortunately I got a loan for my Bachelors of Nursing, before I knew it was haram. Now I would like to go to school to become a Nurse Practitioner it’s a Doctorate degree, but I concerned about the cost. It’s so much more then I can afford, but I really don’t want to get a loan. What they really want, are students who show consistent, academic achievement and emotional maturity , sufficient enough to make it through PA school. I had PA students who were nurses. Further, I got my start in the nursing field 28 years ago when I became a CNA. I did that whilst attending UDC 's now-defunct 2 year RN program.
