    Guys I just found this website that has some great info about PAs and NPs. Well worth the watch. They just do a really great job at teasing out the differences and similarities of the two professions.
    The first video discusses the top ten things he wish he could tell all NPs to help them better understand PAs.
    Link: clinician1.com/read/community-posts/Dave-Mittmans-10-Things-He-Would-Say-to-an-NP-to-Help-Them-Better-Understand-PAs
    The second video discusses the 10 things NPs wished PAs knew about them.

    Thank you so much for this great information. I just graduated undergrad and PA has been my career goal since my sophomore year. I have gotten many people who ask me why I don't just go to medical school. Just like you having a family and having that good work life balance is very important to me and the PA route allows for that.

    Thanks for info Adanna! I was personally pursuing the PA route early in my undergrad however that changed and now I am in Med school. While I was in school these were the pros and cons of both professions and why I ultimately decided MED.
    PA: pros
    -Shorter amount of schooling (Since I plan to become a very involved mother in the next few years, not a mom yet though)
    -Flexibilty of specialty (I'm still in limbo over family med, obgyn, and ER). I know PA gives this flexibility
    -I worked as a scribe in ED and PA's generally seemed happier and more youthful. The PA's who were longer in the game were just as educated as the MD's.
    -Con: getting into PA school has become more competitive now than MD school.
    -No program yet for PA to purse doctorates in their field or a PA to MD bridge program (ex: NP to DNP)
    MD: pros
    - Full Autonomy
    - Dr. "xyz"
    - I wasn't sure how working as a PA is around the world but if i wanted to practice back in my home country and it wouldn't be an issue as an MD
    - Better salary depending on specialty
    -Con: in school forever! AND more debt outta school.

    • @AdannaThePA

      +Naseeha Amrika thanks for your views on the pros and cons. I'll definitely be making a video on my views of the pros and cons which are similar to yours but there are a few differences. I definitely went PA mainly because I wanted my time with my family! I hope med school is treating you well.

      Salaan Sare uh.... Salaan something you mentioned isn’t true. LECOM has a bridge program for PA to MD. The program is called accelerated physician assistant pathway. Med school is only 3 years you just have to promise to work in a certain specialty for 5 years

    Hey Adanna! New sub here :) So I've been stressing out on which route to take, I did a lot of research on MD but the length of school and rotation seems draining especially since my ultimate dream is having a family. And I want to be part of my kids growing up too! I love your energy! My first plan was PA but I thought "why not just work on getting into med school?" But after watching a couple of your videos, I'm almost certain PA is my calling! I'm here to support and get insight while on my journey to get into a PA program!

    Just a FYI ... DNP student here. We use both the medical model and nursing model as NPs. Which means we focus on both the pathophysiology and the patient at the same time. It is a more comprehensive approach. Often times by taking into account all aspects of the patient's history, you undercover the initial cause of the disease process and can address the cause as well as treat the disease. It requires a very analytical approach that includes differential diagnosis.

    • @AdannaThePA
      @AdannaThePA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Silly Theodore and Friends well thanks for that information didn't realize that. I have some friends that are in NP programs but on a master's level, and although they do DDxs the underlying model that they're running off is the nursing one not medical so I appreciate that information. It's always good to learn something new.

    • @sillytheodoreandfriends7393
      @sillytheodoreandfriends7393 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just a follow-up. Master level NPs also use the medical model. It is underpinned with the nursing model. I know it sounds confusing, and I suspect many think because the nursing model is in play that means the medical model has been dismissed, but that is not the case. Have a blessed day. :-)

    • @AdannaThePA
      @AdannaThePA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Silly Theodore and Friends thanks for this. There actually is a lot of confusion about the two professions, and I'm pretty sure many people don't know that the PA degree was actually first proposed the the nursing program at Duke. The history of the two professions is actually very closely melded. I actually just for two videos about our professions that really clarifies some of these questions. I pinned it to this video, you should check them out and lemme know what you think. Thanks again for all you comments

    Another good factor when I chose between pa vs np is that most np programs it is required that you have a BSN. Where pa school lets you have any degree you want you just need most of the pre reqs. So it’s really great for students that have been in healthcare that want to advance. Like me I’ve been a EMT since I was 16 and just thoroughly enjoyed working towards a ems bs degree.

    Hi
    I'm new to your Chanel and I'm a college student, in high school I didn't know what I wanted to be I was stuck between MD and NP but once I found out how much time and energy into med school I decided, I want to be an NP and get my doctorate so I can have that "Dr." title without the years of medical school. My advisor told me why don't I just go to medical school and I was quite upset because she didn't believe NP can become doctors...but I'm such a family oriented person who wants to have my own family and watch my kids grow up also be a big part of their lives. I enjoy traveling and I want to travel around the world someday also I want to enjoy my twenties and not give it all up and I found out with MD I wasn't able to do what I wanted to do.....I salute you doing this and with a family because it is not easy!

    • @AdannaThePA

    • @velvetvascular8085
      @velvetvascular8085 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You can definitely have a family as a MD. After residency you could even work part-time. But they don't refer to NPs "Dr." by title. an NP is an NP regardless of masters or doctoral degree level. If you're a NP, you'll be called a NP. Calling someone "Dr." in the workplace is referring to the MD. So if title is important to you in the work environment, rethink the NP route.

    • @missionnoel6753
      @missionnoel6753 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suggest that you pursue the MD route or PA route. Right now, the NP field is starting to get saturated. If you are looking for more flexibility and a life outside of NP school I recommend doing the PA route. What’s so great about getting a “Dr” title behind your name? That shouldn’t be the main focus. Your focus should be on your career and plans in the healthcare field and how you can be an excellent leader. It’s not worth it if all u want is the “title”.

  • @Thkmra
    @Thkmra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    To be fair, NP's do alot more than 'provide care and comfort' to a pt! They also treat the pt ftom a pathophysiological standpoint; can asses, diagnose, even prescribe much the same as a PA. Nonetheless you're right: PA is definitely more in line with a stricter medical model of MD's. Much success on ur journey .. and beautiful family!!

    Hi I am currently a high school senior and I’m starting to apply for college what I’m not sure is what major I should choose or bachelors degree to focus. I want to either be an NP or PA but I do not know which one to chose they are very similar and the PA rout is very interning to me. Also another thing I’m confused on is when you finish you general education 4 years, after that what type of school do you go to and what it the the total total year of schooling for a PA vs NP. also which one is less expensive. Hopefully you can answer these questions for me. BTW love your videos 👍

    The programs required for NPs are much more flexible. Many offer online, night or part time options. PA schools do not and there are fewer programs per state. Both are greatly respected careers but they cater to different types of people. As an adult with a mortgage and/or kids I have to work 40 plus hours a week I can't drop everything to go to school full time. Nursing just works better and the pay and autonomy is virtually the same! Good video.

      Right this is silly , you need to be a RN, so if you’re not of course you’d be a PA, the fact they accept any degree is crazy to me

    Do you think most PA schools are open to accepting nurses. I was thinking of going RN and taking a year off to get experience and then applying to PA school.

    • @AdannaThePA
      @AdannaThePA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Metcalf Madness ABSOLUTELY! I think nurses make great PAs. They come with a good amount of experience with the meds and those that are seasoned in the nursing profession thrive as PAs. No school would turn you away because you went to nursing school first, rather I think it would be a benefit to you and them.

    The farther South the lest autonomy :(. So if you had more autonomy you would be seeing the same load as a physician for 1/2 the income and same stress?
    Also are you allowed to customize your practice in any way?

      @mrAZcardinal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have about 120 hours of shadowing. I just became a CNA and am planning on working full-time for a year as a CNA. That'll put me at roughly 2000 hrs. Is that competitive? I read online that people are applying with 10,000 hrs and that's fkin insane. :/

    Ugh! Can't decide between NP and PA. PA is less school than NP which means being in the real world sooner, but it seems PA school is harder to get into and is more rigorous. I have a Bachelor's in Physical Therapy and decided PT wasn't for me. Despite the bachelors, NP will basically make me start all over with an associates in nursing to be an RN, while PA will make me work for only a year to get hours for PA school. But I prefer the patient model over the medical. Hmmm

    • @10byrdie
      @10byrdie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mrArchduke Not true look up a fast track RN program. We have 3 in my state. If you already have a bachelors it takes 15-16 months to receive you bachelors in nursing. Then 2 years for NP. For me it’s less credits to do that route than to do PA prereqs and school. I’m a Respiratory Therapist (bachelors) still deciding which route to take.

  • @Miaonroblox
    @Miaonroblox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m in school so should I go through the nursing program? I hear you are to have some type of hospital or health experience in medical field for at least three years? Do you have to become an RN first? Or get a BSN before you go for PA?

  • @azzip3246
    @azzip3246 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The AMA struck down optimal teams last year. Points about gaining more independence are not correct. If you plan on practicing in a state that has passed the NP independence laws, you should understand that you are at a disadvantage as a PA.

    Have you looked into grants that are outside the financial aide. There are companies who give out grants i think they get a tax write off even some churches and other funding I pray that you keep pushing forward good has good things in store for you. I wished i was in the position to help but I’m finishing of my RN-BSN program then after a short break doing MSN-NP and probably won’t have loans to pay for it found a school thats around $30k and will see if i can pay it off while attending. I have no kids at the moment and would like to finished off my NP by 37 so i can finally look to start a family

    So it takes about 6 to 8 years to become a PA? And then you can go right into the work force or you will need experience? Or you get the experience in school? Thank you

    • @AdannaThePA
      @AdannaThePA  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A little of both. So most get jobs right out of school some have to wait a couple months but typically that first job is where you build up your experience and then you can transition to the job that you wanted to specialize in within two to three years

    As autonomy of PAs and NPs increase, I wonder if they get their own panel of patients without any liability from physicians. This ought to be implemented if not inevitable. One day, malpractice insurance will be a part of the picture as well along with lawsuits

  • @laurenlatour918

    Hi Adanna, what advice would you give me as a person that is not certain of the program because I have never done any dissection, and it sounds quite brutal..I want to work as a dermatology PA which wouldnt require as invasive procedures from my understanding. thanks!

    • @AdannaThePA
      @AdannaThePA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lauren LaTour Well although you will have to perform dissections it is only so you truly understand the variations in human anatomy. You will have to do various rotations where you will see a lot of blood, like ER, and surgical, but I know you will be fine. It's the "brutality" is a deal breaker for you, then you will really have to think about what you want in life, but I'm sure you will be fine once you get in. Your days aren't filled with dissection. Good Luck!

      Adanna, I am also wondering how the clinical rotations work and what exactly do you do during rotations (assist, execute, lead)? Also, what does the general curriculum for first and 2nd semester PA school look like? Thanks again!

    • @AdannaThePA
      @AdannaThePA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those are all great questions. I'll work on the rotations one for you because I have a mentor who is currently on rotations so I can ask her that question. I'll make a video about my curriculum because although they may be similar, different schools probably vary in how they/ when they give a particular module.

    I’m a freshman in college and bridging to a university to be a BSN. But I want to be a pa. I’m afraid I won’t do well in the nursing program like you said the nursing subject is much more patient oriented. I am more interested in they medical aspect I love learning about the body and learning what diseases are caused by what. What else is their to take in the university and community college that isn’t nursing that will still lead me to pa school?
