im having troubles with doing this since when i connect the rays effect to the text the media out gets completely black, does anyone know why?

Something to check is to make sure you are connecting the text node to the correct (yellow) input on the rays node. Also make sure to follow the order in the tutorial, text node to rays node to output. Hope that helps.
