The Chassidic community has so much to offer our broken world. They can teach us modesty, kindness, warmth, and a sense of mutual responsibility and community.
They why don’t they. We cannot learn by looking at videos or staring at them in our community cities. 😊 we need inclusion specially for mixed heritage Jews who want to live a more modest community based life where on Fridays there could be a getting together and reading the Bible together while also listening to Rabbis explain everything. Later a coffee/tea session. Once a month would be great! I’ll pray on it.
All due respect, i learned those things in my *Christian* childhood, 45+ years ago. Time went by before the lessons ‘took,’ but i use the crochet skills l learned in childhood to make scarves, shawls and other items for the homeless. To ‘NEMO-NEMO’….. because history has not treated Jews kindly, you may have heard of WWII? At least 6MILLION Jews were murdered?, another 5MILLION deemed ‘undesirable’ also murdered? I live right on the edge of the Hasidic section of Williamsburg, and I think many outsiders misinterpret their behavior. If you’re polite, dressed appropriately and use a couple words of Yiddish, most of them will likewise treat you with the utmost dignity and respect. The smallest amount of effort to respect their culture goes a really long way. I love this interview, because it highlights the humanity and warmth of this community which can get lost in translation into the Anglo-American context. Great video!
@@rahc1819 You can think whatever you want. I’m just giving my perspective. I literally live right next to this community and interact with them regularly. Their culture is so different from mainstream society that it can be perplexing for people who don’t understand it. The perception that they’re rude or hostile to all outsiders is definitely not true from my personal experience.

I’m a teacher, and have taught with a famous graphic novel about the Holocaust to my 8th graders for several years. It is just theory for me, but to hear Pearl’s recount, I am reminded these were families and mothers and children, not just symbols to represent millions. Thank you. I haven’t had my breath taken away very often by listening to a speaker, I but Pearl took my breath away. Her love of her people is evident
As a non-Jew, I always enjoy learning more about the Hasidic Jews...their history and culture and how they blend their historical wisdom and traditions with modern life. They always seem so happy and well adjusted in our disjointed times and their communities are thriving.
What a wonderful woman Pearl is to open up her home. I grew up in Williamsburg in the 60s and next to this Hassidic community. I have nothing but fond memories of my childhood and so glad I grew up there. 🙏❤️🙏

What a lovely and hospitable lady Pearl is. The cottage window mirrors are adorable but honestly I do not know how she would have successfully been able to prepare meals for her large family in such a tiny kitchen! I'm gobsmacked at the very idea of the dishes taking over every inch of space. It is far better suited to how it is now as senior citizen.

I love Pearl's style. The windows are so Mediterranean in a way. And I love the way the living room is oriented around socialising rather than a TV. We're not Hasisic, but we haven6had a TV in our home for 30 years and I don't miss it one bit. At least we actually talk to each oter and enjoy each other's company - unlike in many families today.

I live about a block from the strictest orthodox synagogue in our city BUT cannot see it (asked my Jewish doctor) because of security reasons & what is happening in the world at the moment. Why do people hate & hurt & even kill these lovely people? I really don’t understand. Maybe if they met someone like Pearl they might think differently. What the world needs is more Pearls.

This is amazing!! I studied Hasidism in college, but particularly the Lubavitcher community (I'm not Jewish). I've always had amazing experiences learning from Hasidim of different sects, and I feel like Pearl is emblematic of many women I met across Brooklyn. I was from one of the few Jewish families who kept Kosher, observed Shabbos and the Jewish holidays, yet have never been in the home of a Chassidic Jewish family. I just happened upon this video and the memories of my Bubbie. She was not Hasidic (neither am I) but her personality was just like Pearls. Being Jewish was always important to her and that is something that she instilled in me. A very gracious lady. I miss her so much. Thank you, Pearl, for letting us in your home.

I was literally moved to tears! Thank you and please thank Pearl. I grew up in Brooklyn, most of my friends were Jewish, though not Hasidim, and I have always felt an affinity for Judaism - from afar. A few years ago, I discovered that I am 18.8% Jewish (Ashkenazi Y-dna) with a 9th great grandfather who was a Rabbi & Kabbalist in Amsterdam, and the first translator of the Tanakh into German and Yiddish, Jekutiel ben Isaac Blits. I am now studying (in my dotage) for a PH.D. in philosophy of religion with Jewish Mysticism as a major area. I LOVE your channel. (I have never before joined a channel so quickly.) And yes, everything IS religious (spiritual)! When I come to New York this October, I will plan to spend a day in Williamsburg.
I didn't spend just a day in Williamsburg - I spent the entire week in a flat on S. 11th Street, naively hoping to engage with Hasidim. Unfortunately, this was during Sukkot, when all the shops were closed, and everyone appeared to be very busy.

This was awesome! What a fiery personality, and love your interactions with her! I’m from but modern orthodox and recently stayed in a Kosher hotel in Boro Park-what a different world, and culture shock for me! I sat on the balcony and people watched all of Shabbos. Would love to know about all of the different communities there. I noticed very distinct differences in clothing and could identify certain dynasties but there is so much there in that small little neighborhood.

I really love these videos/tours; they are so far removed from my own culture and experience it's just really fascinating. I deeply admire the family orientation, tradition, and firm culture of Hasidic households. Personally I would have no way of finding my lineage back past one great x 4 grandmother because I know her daughter built churches in England and Wales, but that's it, and I've never been to those places on the other side of the world. What a gift to have all those books and all that knowledge.

The Chassidic community has so much to offer our broken world. They can teach us modesty, kindness, warmth, and a sense of mutual responsibility and community.

I live right on the edge of the Hasidic section of Williamsburg, and I think many outsiders misinterpret their behavior. If you’re polite, dressed appropriately and use a couple words of Yiddish, most of them will likewise treat you with the utmost dignity and respect. The smallest amount of effort to respect their culture goes a really long way. I love this interview, because it highlights the humanity and warmth of this community which can get lost in translation into the Anglo-American context. Great video!

It is just theory for me, but to hear Pearl’s recount, I am reminded these were families and mothers and children, not just symbols to represent millions. Thank you. As a non-Jew, I always enjoy learning more about the Hasidic Jews...their history and culture and how they blend their historical wisdom and traditions with modern life. They always seem so happy and well adjusted in our disjointed times and their communities are thriving.

What a lovely and hospitable lady Pearl is. The cottage window mirrors are adorable but honestly I do not know how she would have successfully been able to prepare meals for her large family in such a tiny kitchen! I'm gobsmacked at the very idea of the dishes taking over every inch of space. It is far better suited to how it is now as senior citizen.

I love Pearl's style. The windows are so Mediterranean in a way. And I love the way the living room is oriented around socialising rather than a TV. We're not Hasisic, but we haven6had a TV in our home for 30 years and I don't miss it one bit. At least we actually talk to each oter and enjoy each other's company - unlike in many families today.

I live about a block from the strictest orthodox synagogue in our city BUT cannot see it (asked my Jewish doctor) because of security reasons & what is happening in the world at the moment. I was literally moved to tears! Thank you and please thank Pearl. I grew up in Brooklyn, most of my friends were Jewish, though not Hasidim, and I have always felt an affinity for Judaism - from afar. A few years ago, I discovered that I am 18.8% Jewish (Ashkenazi Y-dna) with a 9th great grandfather who was a Rabbi & Kabbalist in Amsterdam, and the first translator of the Tanakh into German and Yiddish, Jekutiel ben Isaac Blits. I am now studying (in my dotage) for a PH.D. in philosophy of religion with Jewish Mysticism as a major area. I LOVE your channel. (I have never before joined a channel so quickly.) And yes, everything IS religious (spiritual)! When I come to New York this October, I will plan to spend a day in Williamsburg.

I didn't spend just a day in Williamsburg - I spent the entire week in a flat on S. 11th Street, naively hoping to engage with Hasidim. Unfortunately, this was during Sukkot, when all the shops were closed, and everyone appeared to be very busy.

This was awesome! What a fiery personality, and love your interactions with her! I’m from but modern orthodox and recently stayed in a Kosher hotel in Boro Park-what a different world, and culture shock for me! I sat on the balcony and people watched all of Shabbos. Would love to know about all of the different communities there. I noticed very distinct differences in clothing and could identify certain dynasties but there is so much there in that small little neighborhood.

I really love these videos/tours; they are so far removed from my own culture and experience it's just really fascinating. I deeply admire the family orientation, tradition, and firm culture of Hasidic households. Personally I would have no way of finding my lineage back past one great x 4 grandmother because I know her daughter built churches in England and Wales, but that's it, and I've never been to those places on the other side of the world. What a gift to have all those books and all that knowledge.
