Alaska Airlines has announced that they are grounding their entire fleet of Boeing MAX-9 planes following a terrifying incident in which a hole opened in the plane mid-flight.
KTLA 5's Carlos Herrera reports. (Jan. 6, 2024)
KTLA 5 News - Keeping Southern Californians informed since 1947.
ALL 737-9 MAX aircraft operated by US carriers or operating in US territory are now grounded by order of the FAA and affects about 171 aircraft.
People still willing to board a Boeing 737 MAX should get a 90% discount on ticket.
More like a mental evaluation
100% off, I still wouldn't go.
Thank you for this video! I’m glad everybody landed safely. ✈️
It’s a damn good thing that door didn’t hit the tail ! 😳
Dam, and these are new planes!
They aren't 'new', they are the Max-8, just renamed. Beware.
@@sicilianotoronto well this specific aircraft entered service Oct. 2013. Maybe not a new model but still a new physical plane.
LETS JUST KEEP PRETENDING THAT BOEING IS NOT PUTTING DANGEROUS TRASH IN THE AIR.
ouch
This is terrifying and kind of makes me not want to fly. It's a miracle no one got sucked out of the airplane.
There really needs to be stricter regulations about airplane manufaturing and heavy fines for Boeing since they seem to be cutting corners and cost and fliers at risk. Things like this shouldn't and cannot happen at 30,000 ft.
Well done everyone on board, keeping calm, and Cabin crew ,also pilots.
They got a free thrill pleasure ride.
The female pilot was frantic... definitely not calm. Go listen to the ATC recording.
@@_w_w_ I agree, the tower asked her 10 times what happened and all she could say it was depressurized but then maybe she didn't know about the piece falling off.
Next question: Who constructed and mounted the plug? Boeing or a contractor of Alaska Airlines?
Probably the lowest bidding contractor...
Boeing offered the door as an extra feature for more money. Alaska declined the feature, so they sealed off the door instead of completely remaking the plane's fuselage without the hole. No thought as to what could happen to the plane if the "bandaid" fuselage was in the air. Shame on Boeing.
They bought the cheapest bolts at local ACME hardware. 😮
@@MaxBernseGAA slap happy design solution approved by some accountant?
Sounds like bolts made in china!🤣
That’s why you have your seatbelt on when seated.
That's good, the 737 max better be grounded till arrangements are done for the recertification!
This is your Captain speaking. If you look out the side of the plane…literally you can see Portland.
Coupons for future Alaska airline trip will be given to the passengers 😂
😂😂
We can’t even bold together an airliner now? 😔
Nobody likes gaping holes.
Video is of “Max8” not max 9 as said on pamphlet if you pause video
Oh look the door blew off. May I have another drink please.
They need to retire the max line
Its the door not the entire plane.
@@blackworldtraveler3711 apparently you don't know about the hundreds of people who died from the crashes 5 years ago
@@farfetchleek9821
Know quite a bit.
I was posting about the Alaska Airlines aircraft.
But if you want to bring up five years ago that was an MCAS issue.
I’m a retired aerospace metallurgical engineer with an AMT and NDT certification.
Lockheed,NASA,Boeing,and AA.
The doorway is not for a boarding door! Why can’t reporters get their facts straight, or just say nothing rather than make stuff up?
Pilot: "We've had a unscheduled unplugging of the optional door plug. We're going to need to return to PDX."
Tower: wtf
Mad Max 😥
Not the Max again. What happened??
That’s what happens when Airlines do Profit over Safety
Airlines trying to cut costs for higher revenue margins. Even if it means sacrificing the safety of their passengers and crew. Shame on Boeing and CEOs.
Your comment is very confusing. You mention "Airline trying to cut costs" yet later you say, "Shame on Boeing and CEOs". Alaska Airlines is the operator of the said aircraft, Boeing is the manufacturer; who are you trying to blame? The video clearly says this aircraft is barely 8 weeks old. It's like blaming the driver instead of Toyota for a brake failure.
Also, who was responsible for installing the plug and signing off on it. The Airline? Boeing? Or an outside contractor? It would be like blaming Toyota for a brake failure when a auto mechanic failed to install brake pads.@@philiplee8330
@@philiplee8330 The airline CEOs and Boeing's.
Was it caused by a standard safety feature the airline has to purchase?
Watch mayday ✈️ before you get get on planes
Whole section of the plane just falls off at 33,000 feet? Nobody had a can of FlexSeal?
16,000ft.......
@@Vulcancruiser They’re lucky as hell it was 16,000
I work in aerospace it’s definitely profits over safety and quality.
New boeing aircraft are garbage
So it was a "plug" that blew out....a portal that can be used for an additional boarding door. Apparently the manufacturer created an additional exit instead. Surprised the airline doesn't charge extra for the "enhanced views."
Please, nobody panic. If you haven’t done so, put on your seatbelt. We’re experiencing a bit more turbulence than normal.
wow, imagine being 2 ft away from a 100ft+ fall death
What I’d like to know where did the emergency door land and did it damage any property?
Is there a lemon law for aircraft? I'm sure the 737 MAX would qualify 😆
Is it me or is it more like Final Destination
Lord l hope this is not like the DC-10 tragedies again. Here we go with the Maxies again. Thank God everyone is safe.
Boeing is struck again with, "pilot error."
Secondly why is there a city in California called Ontario
To maximize confusion :) Its outside of LA so popular airport for folks in the Inland Empire.
@@dcarlin3 …
If I could build a plane that would never lose its door, I'd be so smart, and whoever built that plane would be so dumb.
This is totally unacceptable.someone with authority get involved, peoples lives are at risk!
The FAA grounded them.
Max series are dangerous.
When will these airlines realize that the MAX is a curse and needs to just get rid of all of them. Airbus is better anyways 😒
Only the lower density seating 737 max 9
I’m sure mayor Pete will be right on this! (As soon as he returns from his 27th taxpayer funded dream honeymoon).
Glad that door wasn't on my side of the production line. Someone is going to get canned on Monday.
How many 737 Max have this “plug” that can be converted to a door? Is that every Max, just some of them, or…? If a carrier doesn’t tell me the type of plane, or does a bait and switch at the gate, I am changing my flight. It’s going to take one wiping out a neighborhood or crashing into a terminal before they make Boeing do it right.
All the MAX9 have it. The spot is for an optional door for low-end low-cost airlines that want to add more seats. For airlines like AS that have normal seat density, a panel is put in instead of the exit door. I am a frequent flyer and I will not board another MAX-9 flight, especially when they use it to fly to Alaska or Hawaii. Imagine this happens over the Pacific, you are done.
@@_w_w_
Looks more like a door to me than a plug because of the stop fittings along the sides.
If it was a plug it would have to be taken off from the inside.
@@blackworldtraveler3711 It's called a door plug... that's the technical name. However it's smaller than the main doors, so calling a plug in that context makes sense.
@@_w_w_
I know all of that.
It’s not a true plug as far as I’m concerned compared to the smaller over wing hatches with the entire frame holding it instead of stop fittings.
Yes it maybe smaller than the main doors but it is not smaller than the door frame opening hence the stop fittings.
With these newer planes they are basically over wing doors without girt bar/fittings.
@@blackworldtraveler3711 What you and I want to call it doesn't make a difference. Door plug is the correct technical name and it was selected for a reason, so there is no need to reinvent the wheel and create confusion.
Wow. Asians are really calm people...because Americans would've been in sheer panic, looking like a scene from Airplane! #amazingcalm
So somebody jacked around with the locks is a guess.......I'm sure the crews train for this every year at recurrent in Seattle. Pretty much a non event for the guys up front, a real hairball for the folks in back...........
What locks? It’s a panel that’s not openable
@@longfang98 Fang what do you mean it won't open? IT JUST DID.........from the info I have Boeing subbed that panel in if some carrier wants another door in there later........
Not a good idea to open a Boing Boing air craft window at 16000 Ft and flying faster than China's bullet train.
I got flashbacks to Final Destination. 😂
Boeing should stop importing their parts from other countries.
The Automatic Overwing Exit Door is manufactured in Salt Lake City
@@williamdunn4811This doesn't look good for Boeing.
@@MySpace662 I used to work for them for a few years. I will never fly on a 737 Max, 787 or 747.
@@williamdunn4811 Is it the management ?
@@MySpace662 at its core sure.
Schedule and Cost is more important than quality. They hire unskilled workers and have them do complex jobs.
When covid came they laid off every employee that was vocal about quality defects
Max 9 = Max 8 with added ventilation.
Made in America and everybody laughs at Chinese products and everyone talks about nuclear war and North Korea thinking of nuclear the American western coastal areas and the American military couldn't stop a slow moving Chinese weather balloon in time
The FAA needs to have stricter rules for how cheap they allow airlines to be when it comes to sacrificing passenger and crew safety. Also, fines to Boeing for making life-saving features cost extra.

Danger in the air, as well as Land,,, air pirate's will be cruising soon. 😮
Alaska Airlines is also a POS.
I mean, I sat by an open door going skydiving. It’s a nice view.

The first and onlyy thing that came to my mind when I saw this was the first Fi al Destination movie and those two women getti g pulled out of the aircraft after the side exploded.
I have never been on a airplane. A hot air balloon once that went straight up. And straight down. And it was tied to the ground. That's all the flying I have done. 😂😂😂👍
