- See the town of Bingham, Utah before it was abandoned and lost to the mine's expansion. The scenes, including the mine's railroad and the mining and smelting activities were all filmed by the late railroad historian, Bernice Jackson in a number of filming trips. Bernice was an expert with a movie film camera, and she could tell her "story" very well for us to see the history that she witnessed. This presentation was edited and narrated by Charles Smiley.

My grandfather, Robert Sant, worked as a lineman and sub-station operator for the Kennecott railroad from 1928 to 1931. My mother was born in a little hospital in the town of Bingham in 1928. In 1931, Sant took a job with the Sacramento Northern RR, doing the same things he did for Kennecott. When he retired in 1971, he was the general power forman (though no electric operations after 1965) and trainmaster.
I remember seeing these electric locomotives operate between the mine and the smelter in the western Salt Lake Valley as late as the middle 70's! Great memories!
I arrived in Utah in the 1990s when there were still some tracks in the pit. Diesels were doing the work alongside the gigantic dump trucks that would replace them. I heard several stories from people who had visited the mining town of Bingham, and I wished I could have experienced that. Great video of a Fascinating operation.
This is simply awesome stuff me an my 5 year old make an evening 🌆 out of watching your videos all most every day 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Electric Locomotives are useful. The class 1 railroad companies should invest in Electrification.
The town reminds me of Bisbee, Arizona.
I Love mining Railroad.
