One of my favorite stories about Marilyn Monroe came from Ella Fitzgerald.
Ella was popular, but because she was a black woman, many nightclubs would not let her play.
Ella said: "I owe Marilyn a real debt." Marilyn pushed for a manager to let Ella play at a very popular club. And if he did, she would sit in the front table every night. He booked Ella, and Marilyn was there every night.
Ella said after that, she never had to play small clubs again.
Great story, Ella Fitzgerald wow.
True and thank you Marilyn! She and Jane Russell are my girls! Geminis❤️ 41 blk dude South Florida
You will adore the movie "Some Like It Hot". Yes, it is in black and white, but the humour still stands to this day, and she is adorable.
Oh! Yes, would love to see Britt's reaction to "Some Like it Hot" - now that would be so fun!
"it is in black and white". Why is that disqualifying?
My favorite is The 7 Year Itch.
@@nedludd7622 It doesn't. I only mentioned it as Brit was saying that everybody had black and white TVs in those days.
Marilyn hated this movie ... But it's gorgious and funny.
She was a triple threat, sing , dance , act and she was one of the most beautiful woman ever
Women.
@@1perfectpitch VERY MUCH
I grew up in Niagara Falls. Back in 1953, when Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotton were filming the movie "Niagara" in Niagara Falls, my mother and father went out to dinner. Marilyn and a group walked into the restaurant, and everyone's jaw just dropped, men and women alike. My mother said she was the most beautiful woman she'd ever seen in her life. Marilyn was wearing a clingy dress with no bra (in 1953!), and her hair looked like straw due to the bleaching and film lights (her real hair color was brown), but she was still absolutely gorgeous. This clip is from the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds".
I have her first album titled "Some Like It Hot" the same title as the movie. She starred in this one with Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis.
She was in some great movies. She could do very serious roles, comedy and musicals. Not just a sex symbol but also very talented, she could do it all. Check her movies out.
Also have an Lp from 1962. Both are sealed, I never opened them and don't even know what they're worth.
Being sealed I would think they have some good value, I've never looked them up. I got these in 1977 or 78 in a little local collectable record shop. She was also the first centerfold in the first issue of Playboy I believe from 1954.
Very sought after and highly collectable. Marilyn Monroe is easily the most iconic female entertainer in history.
Hate to, well actually love crushing any Swifties and their TS is the most iconic artist in history BS, even bigger than The Beatles. Newsflash, she couldn't even exist as a pimple on the asses of Marilyn or The Beatles.😂😂
Marilyn was also an all time classic beauty. The video you just watched was just a clip of the song from the movie and a shame because it got even better. While you're on classics please make a note of this.
Gene Kelly from the 1952 movie "Singing In The Rain" the performance of the song and the same title as the movie.
To listen to him sing and better yet watch him dance in the rain while using his umbrella as a dancing prop will blow you away.
This performance is what you reserve the term iconic for and please not a clip from the movie but the whole song and performance.
Gene Kelly was one of the all time greats with his singing and dancing talents from the golden age of Hollywood which was between the 1930's and 50's.
A true icon.
Tomorrow I'm gonna be chirping about your reaction to "Imagine". You can count on it.
Peace❤
Diamonds are a girls best friend is an okay song but my favorite from gentlemen prefer blondes has to be when love goes wrong nothing goes right. So well done
I thought she was a redhead, naturally. I love the old pictures of her from a calendar, before she started acting, when she had curly red hair. She was even prettier, I think. I’ve got auburn hair, and went blond for a couple of years. I just like being a redhead, with green eyes, better. Lol!
Niagara Falls? Slowly I turn, step by step!
@@gwilli9511 I love Hitchcock!
That's our Norma Jeane ❣️❣️❣️
AMEN💋♥️💋♥️💋♥️
Do you remember the Madonna video this inspired? "Material Girl". MM is just crazy beautiful. Probably a better actress than people gave her credit for. Hef owes her his entire empire, because he found some nude pictures of her and bought the rights to them, really launching Playboy as a brand. Tons of performers in her era were multi-threats. Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Elvis, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra. A TON of people could do it all. I don't recall her doing an album, comedy was her main thing. She showed a bit of her acting chops in "Bus Stop" the sort of movie you could do in the 60s. "Some Like it Hot" and "Seven Year Itch" are great movies that feature her.
“The Misfits” with Clark Gable was an acting tour de force for her.
How to Marry a Millionaire is very good too.
There was color in the movies, even though there was no color yet on television- this is a movie!
Yes movies had 3 strip colour back then......too expensive now so we only get 2 strip colour now
She's like a magnet on screen. Your eyes just are drawn to her.
Marilyn and another screen siren Jane Russell were in this movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Marilyn just mesmerized in any film or photo and Jane was a brunette version of that as well. CNN did a really good multipart series about Marilyn recently.
Marilyn was such a talented person in so many ways and also had a good heart. This was from a movie, Gentlemen Prefer Blonds. That was a very shortened clip, so do watch the rest, in fact, watch the movie. Watch all the movies with Marilyn, you won't be disappointed. Not only was she a 'blond bombshell', but a very talented dramatic actress when given the chance to have roles like that.
She did this number in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and it is longer. Although she could sing well enough her recordings were from the soundtracks of the movies that she was in. This character, Lorelei Lee, was probably one of my 2 favorites with the other being Pola in "How to Marry a Millionaire" where she couldn't see well but wouldn't wear her glasses in public when trying to nab a rich man. It also starred Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable, 2 other beauties of that time, but Monroe stole the show with her comedic timing when not wearing her glasses. The 3 were on a quest to find themselves rich husbands. She was the pretty "girl next door" type with a great figure but her mother had mental issues and Monroe ended up in foster care. She was working in a factory and a photographer saw her and she modeled during the war. When she was discovered, Hollyweird did a total makeover on her and typecast her as the dumb blonde but, like Jayne Mansfield, she was pretty intelligent. Unlucky in love but loved by fans.
One of my favorite movies from that era. I'm more of a Lauren Bacall fan but Marilyn's 'blind' acting was too good.
She was a singer along with Actress.....people really never gave her credit. She was very beautiful and she was and still is Ivonic!!!!!❤
She is equally GORGEOUS in black & white in “Some Like It Hot” (1959) with some truly phenomenal gowns!! The film is often listed as one of the greatest American comedies, so there are plenty of laughs.
Marilyn was NEVER vulgar, Always classy❤❤❤ a Lady
OH I remember her in Playboy she was so HOT
This was just the intro and first verse. This is from a movie musical. Note that Carol Channing sang it on Broadway first.
This song was Channings theme song, almost a shame Carol didn't reprise this role in the film. Almost. ❤
Yeah, it’s chopped off at the end! Go find the whole thing, Britt!
I believe Ryan Gosling Oscar's performance was a nod to this
It was indeed.
Yep, it definitely was 😂 ( influenced so many thing, including Madonna's material girl video
You know, I didn’t think of that until I read this! That’s so cool!
It definitely was! If you look at the cravat-type thingy that the men are wearing - distinctive, different, and almost identical in both performances.
Yes there is a longer version.
The 1955 film “The Seven Year Itch” features her in her ICONIC little white dress 👗. It is another great comedy.
Yep, that's my favorite.
Marilyn filmed part of a movie in Jasper, Alberta in the 50s and my grandmother was able to spend a few hours with her. She reports that she was charming, kind, friendly, always tired, and a wonderful person to everyone. Maybe the beautiful mountain scenery and crisp air was good for her.
Elton John - Candle in the Wind
A powerful tribute to Marilyn Monroe.
Her childhood was tragic. Her treatment from Hollywood and the press was brutal.
candle in the wind is asbout princess Diana she the best England's rose she is magnificent shes not dead shes in heaven 🎀🎀🎈🎈🎀
It was
Her treatment from gossip makers are the WORST. Even today.
@@anthonymitchell8893 Sir Elton John made a second version when Princess Diana died. The original is about Marilyn, which is why the first line is "goodbye Norma Jean."
In this song,Marilyn sings the majority of the song, but the "No, no, no" part at the start with the fan was dubbed by a very popular operatic singer at the time, Marni Nixon, who dubbed her voice in for a lot of actresses who had to sing but couldn't in movies. The rest of the song is sung by Marilyn herself except for one verse that Marni dubs. This clip is from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". Popular singers have used this musical number as influences in their videos , especially Madonna , who copied some of the choreography from this number in her video for Material Girl. This clip was cut short because that's not the entire number.
There is a longer version. This is a clip from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She was just awesome! I think you would enjoy the movie for sure! Thanks Britt!
When Marilyn was good, she was amazing! But she was a troubled soul and there were times, I felt so badly for her. This was from the movie of the same name. No, while she (along with every movie star) sang and danced, she was an actress.
This is a scene from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Yes.
Refer to Elton John’s “candle in the wind”.
Marilyn Monroe is one of the great comic actresses of all time, in addition to her many other talents. She was fiercely intelligent and understood exactly how men perceived her and played into the cliche of the "dumb blonde" to great effect in her performances. Her personal life was a sad story, and sadly that's the part people tend to fixate on and sensationalize.
If you want to see Marilyn at her best find the movie "Some Like It Hot". Maybe the best movie ever.
Love that movie!!
Her best performance, the one she liked best that actually showed you the brilliance of her acting chops in a serious, non-comedic, non "dumb blonde" role, was her role in The Misfits I believe it was in 1960 and co-starred Clark Gable. I'm also fairly certain the screenplay was written for her by her husband, Arthur Miller
Yes!! One of my favorite movies EVER❤❤❤
You must watch Some Like It Hot, staring Marilyn, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. It was nominated for 6 Academy Awards and it is a great comedy.
Britt, you're gonna love this: that was just a snippet from the 1953 movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and it was originally sung in the 1949 Broadway production of the same name by....
wait for it....
Carol Channing.
Ryan Gosling's I'm Just Ken performance paid homage to this, as did Madonna's Material Girl video.
I was looking for this comment! 😊
Marilyn lived a short and tragic life. Multiple husbands and affairs including J.F.K. Which in part makes her more iconic.
Happy Birthday Mr. President will live forever.
What a ballsy thing to do.
Look up JFK's gay lover. Plus Marilyn is a biological dude.
Marilyn is fascinating. Her life was sad but she was a great actor and probably one of the biggest sex(?) symbols America has ever had. She was so iconic.
I've watched a lot of older movies and honestly, her movies are a bit formulaic but they all are made to showcase her. And it shows in a good way.
I wish she would have had more complex roles, but then and now - it just isn't what the industry wants to make.
I would like to suggest you do a reaction to 'Candle in the Wind' by Elton John which was a threnody (memorial song) to Marilyn Monroe and was released 11 years after her death. In the song he calls her Norma Jeane because her name at birth was 'Norma Jeane Baker'.
Britt, make sure it is the original coz Elton changed it slightly for Princess Diana 'England's Rose' when she died in 1997.
Britt, you need to listen to both of Elton John's versions of "Candle in the Wind," 💔 the one with that name done about mid 70's then do the one with the name "England's Rose" done in 1997 for Princess Diana's funeral. The one for Diana is especially heart-wrenching!! ❤💔😢 Please react to both. Everybody will love them both. Trust me! 😢
👍👍👍WOW, what a blast from the past. Awesome. 🖖❤
That was from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, 1953. Carol Channing had introduced the show on Broadway. Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee and Jane Russell as Dorothy Shaw deliver one sassy sexy showstopper songs after another. Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell -Two little girls from Little Rock
Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson, was born and raised in LA.
She was a singer an actress a model, she was in Playboy during its initial years. She had a fling with JFK, she was with Joe DiMaggio. This girl was so popular back then it’s mind blowing.
She was in the very first Playboy magazine
She was on the cover of Playboy!
She did not pose for Playboy. Hugh Hefner bought the image to use as the cover of his first issue, but she was also paid for the usage.
@@user-sm3ii5dk1u I believe that’s what I said.
A movie star from the time when it meant you were expected to not only act (comedically and dramatically) but to sing and dance as well.
Privately she was very intelligent and well-read but publicly she crafted a persona of the dumb blonde with the killer body really set her up to represent the ideal woman of the 1950s...something impossible for anyone to live up to in reality.
The fact she died young under rather mysterious circumstances, depending on who you ask, tragically cemented her status as an eternal icon.
This performance from the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes has been replicated, paid homage to, parodied and satirized innumerable times.
Probably most famously by Madonna in her Material Girl video.
When the composer Cole Porter was asked who he would like to sing his songs, for a male he said Fred Astaire; and for a female, Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn was born Norma jean. She spent a lot of her childhood in foster care. Her mom was committed to a mental health facility and Marilyn had nowhere to go. At 16, her foster family was moving, rather than go to an orphanage again or back into foster care, she married a marine. She started working at a factory. While working at the factory, she was discovered by a photographer. She quit the factory, divorced her husband, and started modeling. She did a lot of pin-ups, men's magazines, and so on. She eventually got signed with a studio. The studio bleached her hair, did a minor nose job, put her on a strict exercise plan, and changed her name. She started getting bit parts in movies and eventually became a big star. Although she often played air-heads, she was quite bright and very ambitious. She was known for constantly reading new books in a quest to self-educate herself about an array of topics. She married and divorced several times. She married a famous baseball player---who loved her even after their divorce. She married a famous playwright. She had multiple miscarriages, one was quite late. Her health took a turn, mentally and physically. She started drinking more. She started taking too many pills. She started an affair with the President of the United States (JFK). Her Happy Birthday song to him was quite scandalous at the time. She was an actress and she could sing (but was not considered a singer). She died under suspicious circumstances. No one quite knows if it was an accidental overdose, suicide, or murder. This is a bare-bones summary.
Norma *Jean
@@heidi_d Yeah--I have no idea why I typed that wrong....hahahaha.. Thanks for catching it.
This song was cutoff halfway through. A clip from a film based on the 1949 Broadway play Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - which was based on a 1925 book.
On Broadway, Carol Channing portrayed this character - and sang this song - for 740 performances! When it was revived in 1974, Carol reprised her role another 320 times. Yes, Marilyn covers this song quite well, but it is Carol's song. 🎵
Marilyn never recorded an album AFAIK, but there is an audio album compilation of her musical performances called The Essential Recordings. It's a good listen.
Madonna's "Material Girl" is so similiar...I wonder if it was made in honor of Marilyn
It was a direct homage.
YESSSS! :)
sure was
Great reaction Britt
I still remember picking up the morning newspaper that summer day in 1962 and seeing that Marilyn had died. I was in shock. I was only 12 years old, but Marilyn was "it" for me. She was magnificent.
I had a similar reaction to hear of the passing of Marilyn Chambers who came from a different part of "movies" but held an iconic image in my life.
It is such a joy to watch you educate yourself. Love that you have such varied suggestions!! Your followers send in great requests. I'd give you flowers if I could.
Love it ❤️ Always thrilling to see a first reaction to the power of Marilyn ❤️
Marilyn was the sexiest actress ever, plus she could sing and dance nicely! She was a motion picture star and I do mean star! I was a child back when she broke onto the screen and I adored her. I just subscribed!
I love your attitude. And it's so refreshing to see a younger person appreciate the whole variety of life that's come before.
Fun song! This is from the 1953 musical film "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". Marilyn was in a lot of movies such as "The Seven Year Itch", "Some Like It Hot" etc.
I started watching Marilyn movies over the last year and have totally fallen in love with her.
She's undoubtedly beautiful but like you said it's her movements and her voice and mannerisms that takes it to another level.
The fact that I watched this reaction...after I've watch other reactions with that marilyn monroe t shirt you now have. Toooo funny😂😅😂
This song was from the Broadway musical “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. The star who originally sang it was… (wait for it)… Carol Channing. You can find clips of her singing it on TH-cam.
STOP 🛑!!! I love that you have all avenues open. That's what makes you awesome. Give shine where it needs to be. I truly appreciate this one.I have no color barriers in my life. Thank you for doing this request.
I just saw this, and since I knew you were also a fan of Ella Fitzgerald, I thought you’d like this: In the 50s, the Mocambo would not book Ella Fitzgerald. The owner was reportedly hesitant to book a true jazz singer and thought that Fitzgerald wasn't glamorous enough to perform at the West Hollywood hot spot.
---
“I owe Marilyn Monroe a real debt…it was because of her that I played the Mocambo, a very popular nightclub in the ’50s. She personally called the owner of the Mocambo, and told him she wanted me booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night. She told him - and it was true, due to Marilyn’s superstar status - that the press would go wild. The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. The press went overboard. After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman - a little ahead of her times. And she didn’t know it.”
- Ella Fitzgerald
O you will love this movie if you haven't seen it. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Grew up watching these old movies absolutely delightful ❤😊
this is a partial clip from the movie 'gentlemen prefer blondes'. this musical number was the inspiration behind the music video for madonna's 'material girl'.
Oh PLEASE update this with you watching the full number. I’m dying to see your reaction. This is just the tip of the iceberg. 💎💎💎
lol you need more, we need Movie reviews of you watching her :) .. she was FANTASTIC !!!
I've been obsessed with Marilyn M all of my life; watched her movies, read books and biographies and collected pictures/posters etc. She was just the ultimate blonde bombshell. Please react to the entire clip of this, if possible :) - and Madonna's homage to MM with Material Girl.
OMG Marilyn Monroe awaking my boyhood what a lady she was. When she stood over the street vent OMG
❤️ another good reaction she was captivating
Great reaction ❤❤
I loved this movie as a child. I was so in love with Marilyn when I was 12 yrs old
oh my! She was a great actress and her voice was fabulous. She was the embodiment of fabulosity. Any of her films is iconic.
You’re good. First time watching
She had it all Actress Model. Some like It Hot she played Sugar. To me that's one of her best movies. She was such a troubled soul. Definitely worth a deep dive if you really want to know more.
now that i am in my 70's this scene just brings tears to my eyes
Movies. A beautiful actress mouth watering. Lusciously Devine
Fun fact about this dress ( there are replicas, but the original is sadly no longer ) it was made out of an upholstery fabric. They needed a material that would hold it’s shape, sheen and wouldn’t wrinkle. I can only imagine how heavy it was. This also wasn’t the original costume. The original was a much more revealing “diamond bikini” with strategic mesh. Marilyn had a recent brush at the time with some nude photos that had resurfaced from early in her modeling career, and the studio opted for a more modest costume. Oh- the nude photos were purchased by an up and coming magazine publisher named Hugh Hefner. Marilyn was the first cover girl for the new men’s magazine- Playboy.
Marilyn Monroe was an actress that could sing and dance in her movies
The movie this is from, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, was filmed in 1953 in this gorgeous color. Back then, films didn't make it to tv, so everyone saw it in this beautiful Technicolor on the big screen.
I was a little four year old boy when I first saw her on tv. The instant I saw her I knew and understood that she was a beautiful star. Sadly, she passed within a year. When I was older, I realized how truly great and iconic Marilyn Monroe aka Norma Jean, was.
I read everything about her and discovered how vast and special she was. She could act, sing, tell jokes, and make friends with all types of people. Very few men and women, then and now, could hold a candle to this beautiful, shining star. Thanks for bringing back some fond and wonderful memories.
I like your attitude and style. Keep on doing your reactions, and best of luck to you, Britt.
I had a crush on her when I was 5 lol
There are literally 100s of marilyn monroe albums but as far as i know she never recorded any. She was a model and an actress - and the truth is it wasnt until shortly before her death that she started being recognised for her acting talent with serious roles. Before that she tended to be portrayed as the ‘ditzy blonde’ in comedies - which she was good at but didnt like because it hemmed her in to a limited career. Her final movies - which were basically made by her - flopped at the time (although its now considered a masterpiece) and that and her drug and mental health problems is likely why she ended her own life, although there are a lot of conspiracy theories around that, involving the Kennedies and the mafia. She was amazing, especially when you realise what a hard life she started with.
She is stunning in Niagara (oh my gosh, that walk!) and I love her character in How to Marry a Millionaire, it's such a fun movie.
Marilyn's life story was the inspiration for one of my favorite Elton John songs, Canndle InThe Wind. Elton really nails the heartbreak and pathos surrounding her troubled time on this Earth.
"Goodbye Norma Jeane
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on a treadmill
And they made you change your name...."
"Candle in the Wind" Elton John.
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jean Mortenson) started out as a model, got into acting, was a talented singer, and could hold her own as a dancer! Very talented, and took every opportunity. She was often type-cast as a pretty face with not a lot going on upstairs- and she parlayed that into a public persona. But she herself was quite intelligent, knew who she was and what she was about and how to make the most of it. She later tried to find acting roles that were more challenging, to show what she could do; she knew that beauty doesn't last forever, but talent can. Her life had its dark times; her youth was not ideal, her romantic relationships were.. rocky.
The idea of the tortured genius is over-played; who knows if genius really needs tragedy to thrive, or if those with that touch of madness simply live life too differently from the rest of us to understand? If she had had an easier life, would she have accomplished what she did? Maybe; maybe not. She definitely left the world too soon. She was finally starting to put her teeth into more challenging acting roles; she was just starting to be given the chance to mature as an actress, and as a woman. On the other hand, her pop culture image and mystique have thrived since her death. Had she lived and continued on with an illustrious career into middle and old age, gracefully changing with the times: would popular culture have treated her the same? Maybe not. She has been held in amber, preserved in her late 20s / early 30s prime, forever. That hairdo, that figure, that face: timeless.
Marilyn was always in full color. TV wasn't in color when this was made, but movies were. And magazines, and that's where you saw Marilyn. She wasn't on television; very few major movies made it to TV back then, especially if they'd been made within the previous decade or two.
Yes, "Niagara" (1953, in color) is a Marilyn Monroe film-noir movie to watch on a Saturday night; but so, too, or really more so, you need to check out the 1959 black and white famous film, "Some Like It Hot" with top actors Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis co-starring.
This is from the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". She starred along with another icon, Jane Russell. Marilyn could play "dumb blonde" better than anyone, but she was actually quite intelligent. She was a smart business woman when that was a rare thin in Hollywood. You simply must watch the entire movie. My favorite line, when her character is being accused of wanting to marry her fiance just because he is rich: “Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn't marry a girl just because she's pretty, but my goodness, doesn't it help?”
Watching it first without constantly stopping the video would be nice 😮
This movie, 'Gentleman Prefer Blondes' (1953) 'The Seven Year Itch" (1955) and 'Some Like It Hot' (1959) are my three favorites from Marilyn Monroe. They're all in my collection and I have yet to tire of watching them. IMO she was a comedic genius👏✨
Yep, you got the short video of her famous number .Any questions just ask me. Ive been a Marilyn Monroe fan since Thanksgiving weekend 1969 at the age of 12, I saw the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the short you just showed,I saw it on a B/W TV and Ive been a #1 fan ever since. She was mainly a film star, did her own singing, and lived only until she was 36 years old. The song clip live of My Heart Belongs To Daddy 1960 is a great clip to see, or the one you showed but the long version. You need to see some of her 30 films. Keep up the great videos, really enjoy what you do.
Fabulous comedic actress. Women love her as much as men. She won us all over.
I love Brett's reaction to this, even though its hard to believe she had such little info on MM.
One of the biggest 20th Century movie stars. She's totally beautiful in those 1950s Technicolor movies!
Marilyn was the most famous movie star EVER! I've ALWAYS loved Marilyn since I was a little girl (50 yrs old now). PLEASE watch the movie "SOME LIKE IT HOT" starring Marilyn, Jack lemon and Tony Curtis (Jamie Lee Curtis"Dad). It's a great movie. ❤
She's starred in many movies ❤️❤️❤️ she was a comedic actress, singer, but she also studied and proved herself to be a VERY compelling serious actress, who stole the heart of her male counterparts in the movies. I love her so much. ❤❤❤
Marilyn was "THE" entertainer, the original icon shes incredible
How To Marry A Millionaire is amazing. Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall and Marilyn are brilliant together!!!
This is from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blonds, starring Marilyn and another bombshell from the era, Jane Russell, a fantastic movie with great musical numbers like this.
There's so much to Marilyn's story that I can't give it it's due in a few lines in your comment section. As far as I know she didn't produce an albums because the only time I'm aware she sang was in movies and live performances for things like USO shows when she entertained to troops in Korea in the Korean war. She also had movies where she didn't sing to she was never known as "a singer" per se. Her personal story is riveting and sad and she spent her stardom years looking for love that she never really found. By the way - she started doing movies in the early 50's and they had color back then - I don't think she was ever in a black-n-white movie. She was known for playing "dumb blonde" roles but she was actually highly intelligent and well read. My favorite movie of hers was the last one she did before she passed in 1962 at the age of 36 - "Misfits" where she starred with Clark Gable, which was also his last movie before he died shortly after completing the movie. The main reason I like Misfits best is because the way Marilyn looked. I always thought she was gorgeous but there was always a bit of gaudy over sexualization, whereas in Misfits she is just drop dead beautiful without the in your face sexiness.
She was absolutely beautiful on the black and white tv I can tell you. But it was really her manerisms and expressions that made her so special.
I love her movies..
This was the movie version of the hit Broadway musical "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". The part Marilyn is playing was originated on stage by Carol Channing who you have recently reacted to.
Marilyn Monroe is known primarily as an actress not a singer. She was a wonderful actress greatly under appreciated during her lifetime which was sadly too short. She was only 36 when she died. This song clip is from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is one of my favorite one of her movies. Another one is How to Marry a Millionaire with Betty Garble and Lauren Bacall. But she was great in anything she was in that I have seen. Her performances on film were magical. I remember reading somewhere she could turn the Marilyn Monroe persona on and off at will one of her friends they went out in New York City at the height of her popularity and no one noticed who she was. Marilyn Monroe was her stage name. Her real name was Norma Jean Mortenson. The song "Candle in The Wind" by Elton John was originally written about her.
Britt, this is from the film (movie) 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'. The year this movie was released, 1953, there was color in film ... but color TV in homes was extremely rare.
I clicked on this video to hear your comments the look and the clothes!!
marillyn was the icon of a generation, a true rags to riches story- was very misunderstood and died very mysteriously and way to soon in 1962. many claim the kennedys were responsible for her death since she was very friendly with both of them. a very tragic life and a very down to earth, insecure lady.
Shes was one of a kind...there will NEVER be another like her..
This song "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" is from the screen musical "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953). The film was based on the 1949 stage musical of the same name. Carol Channing was 28 when she created the role of Lorelei Lee and sang this song for the first time ever. I adore Carol Channing; she was a sweetheart of stage and screen for decades. But Marilyn (age 27) brought a whole level of sex appeal to this role that was ALL her own! I've never seen a recording (if one exists) of Channing's rendition- but based on what I have seen of her earlier work, I have to assume that she was more bubbly and cute and enthusiastic about her love of diamonds; I don't see her pulling off the sultry, sexiness of Marilyn.
(If anyone else knows of a recording of Channing, and/or if you have opinions, I'd welcome them!)
This was one of the musical numbers from the movie “ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes “ ( 1953 ) with Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell.
