Thank you for this timeless song, which resonates so deeply with Ukrainians today. These words embody the true spirit of brotherhood that helps us preserve life and faith in the future. Brotherhood between people, nations, and those who support us in the darkest times. Your lyrics remind us how important it is to stand together. Your music is more than just a melody; it’s inspiration, hope, and gratitude. ❤️🇺🇦
I was on a raft trip in Siberia USSR when I first heard this song. It was a citizen exchange trip in 1988. It has a special meaning. I made great friends whom I still keep in touch to this day. Thanks Mark
For all the joy this man has bough us with both his unusual way of playing and the words to songs that we can never forget, as he says they are oart of our lives, i wish him A long and happy life, and the ability to keep coming back and giving us more of those wonderful sounds that it seems only he can make. I watch him play, and see a man who is at one with the instrument, almost as if its part of him, a true bit of history for the books, and I hope a long line of lovely songs that are themselves stories, either about life or someone special, either to him or all of us Thank you Mark you really are an inspiration to our souls and our love of good music, live long and live healthy and happy.

@@SC-su1zb Gilmour and Knopfler are both gods. No one else is on their level. There's a lot of guitar gods, but they are unique. I love both. It's not competition btw.
I have loved this song since I first heard it in the 1980s. I stumbled upon new depths of meaning on holiday in the Netherlands last year. We were cycling along the river Waal just downstream from the city of Nijmegen where there had been fierce fighting in 1944 in the attempt to cross the Waal and relieve British paras trapped on the Rhine at Arnhem some 10 miles north. We came across a memorial on the riverbank to 49 men of the US 82nd Airborne who had died in what war historians have described as a semi-suicidal opposed daylight crossing. It was successful, but at great cost. Ultimately of course it was a futile waste of life, as they could not then force a way through to Arnhem. They had died fighting for their brothers in arms just 10 miles away. As we stood at the memorial an young Dutchman came by and shared our moments of respect. He was two generations removed from that conflict but said he stopped by regularly to honour the men who died to liberate his city and country. As we chatted I noticed a small tribute which someone had placed at the foot of the memorial stone. It was a photo and some memorabilia in memory of a young soldier, 26 years old, who had died in Afghanistan in 2009. Next to his photo was a verse from "Brothers in Arms". I assumed he was also US Airborne and his loved ones had wanted to mark the link with his regiment's past. But when I got home I did some research and discovered that he was corporal Kevin van de Rijdt of the Dutch special forces who had been killed by the Taliban in September 2009. Like the men at Nijmegen, he had been far from home, fighting with his brothers in arms. Someone - parent, partner, or fellow soldier had wanted to make the connections in time and space. I find this very moving and can't now listen to that song without visualising the Waal memorial and Kevin's picture. The cause may be noble and the soldiers heroic but the human cost is tragic. For me, Knopfler has absolutely nailed the war song for all time. Thank you.

Such a beautiful sad song. War is sick and vile. It brings out a beauty and sadness of man's losses but that love can be had in other ways than violence. Look at the World at War series after WWII.
