this is in my opinion one of the sweetest songs ever written, which makes the story behind it all the more depressing...(cue violin music)
billy wrote this for his first wife elizabeth. they met when he was a teenager, a high school dropout who barely had a cent to his name. fast forward 7 years and billy's quickly becoming an international success, so he writes her this song and sings it to her in front of all their friends as a birthday present to show her that he may be rich and famous, but there's no need to change because of it - he loves her just like he always did, just the way she is.
now, i'd like to think of myself as a pretty tough guy but if someone did that for me i'd be curled up on the floor in floods of tears. but what did elizabeth do? well, she didn't thank him. she didn't tell him she liked the song, or anything to that effect. she didn't even smile. she just said "i hope i get the publishing rights". billy thought (well, probably hoped) it was a joke, but according to billy's friends, she later really did slag him off because he didn't give her publishing rights (remember, being both his manager and his wife at this point she really didn't have to worry about money).
billy was letting her know that she didn't have to try and fit what people expected 'billy joel's wife' to be, and she didn't have to make herself seem any better for him because to him, she was perfect. but he said this song actually spelled the beginning of the end for their marriage -- as she became more cold, manipulative and far more wrapped up in the celebrity lifestyle than he ever was, he realised he was saying 'don't go changing' to a woman who had already changed.

Billy Joel said that the melody for this song came to him in a dream. In some unconscious sense this song strikes at the very core of love for those in my generation.
I heard him tell the story of how this tune came into his head while he was at a meeting with his record company, and had to excuse himself and run home to the piano to get it down so he would not forget it...he kept repeating ad lib lyrics..like "I'm going crazy"...over and over so as not to forget what he was hearing.

Sometimes hard to describe how this man and his songs make a person feel, I have loved this song since I was 18 talk about memories especially one particular girl back then. Now in my late 40's its just as emotional. He can make you cry for the good or the bad of the memory or situation you where or are in now, his music is timeless.
