First tune, the Tonight Show band, with the great Ernie Watts doing the sax solo, with Doc Severinsen leading. The second clip was from the 1960's, when Buddy was playing with the Harry James Orchestra. Harry James and Buddy Rich knew each other clear back into the Swing Era. One has to remember that Buddy Rich first hit the big time with the Artie Shaw band in 1937, later playing with Tommy Dorsey's band, and others, as well as fronting his own band periodically, then permanently in the late 1960's until his death.

I had the privilege of seeing Buddy Rich in concert three times. My mom was a huge jazz fan and took us all to see the greats. Buddy Rich set a standard few will reach much less appreciate. Thanks for reminding me of some amazing times!

THE BEST BIG BAND DRUMMER EVER!!! Awesome technique and drive, and check out that left hand action.....

Johnny loved having Buddy on the show. Johnny's favorite music was big band jazz. Buddy actually gave Johnny one of his kits. This was great entertainment that still holds up decades later.

Buddy was certainly the leader of the band. You can't overstate his talent. Buddy Rich is more to drums than Babe Ruth was to Baseball. I don't care what genre a drummer plays, they all mention Buddy as the best or right up there.

Buddy was and still is a major influence on my drumming career. The artistry this man had was incredible and I got to see him live in 1980 in London. He is unmatched

I feel bad for younger drummers than I, who never got to experience Buddy live. One thing to watch a video, another to see him live. It was a mystical experience. Knowing that the day would come when I wouldn’t be able to experience him live, I saw him a couple of dozen times, starting in 1971 until his last year of life In 1987. A true magical experience each time I saw him live!!!!

Yes have seen him live 3 times when I was 15 at a supper club in KY with my parents the table we had was up front 8 to 10 feet away from him it was spectacular his foot was so fast it was a blurr....

I believe Buddy Rich is the GOAT. The way I see it .... Buddy was the best big band drummer, Neal Peart was the best drummer for Rush, Copeland the best for the police and Siberiano the best freestyle. They're all good 👍

@@thomasfaulk8219 two excellent drummers as well you can't take that away from them. We can go on forever trying to figure out or even vote for the best there's so many good drummers that are not mentioned and even up coming drummers. There's a street performing that many feel is the best in the world. There's a Hispanic drummer that won first place in a drum off contest which I feel is the best I've seen lately. Some people like what they hear and some people know what is hard to do

I grew up on Buddy and saw him a number of times very close up. He was beyond great, he was SUPERNATURAL. He was born with a freak gift. His audience were mostly drummers (pro's, teachers and students). We weren't inspired at the end of a concert, we were DEVASTATED!

Ed Shaughnessy’s kit is sitting up there while Buddy does his thing… but trust me, Ed was a master as well. You should look in to him as well. Louie Bellson was another of Buddy’s peers, and was arguably the world’s first double bass player.

To put it in a basketball context, all the other drummers were kids playing pickup ball pick up ball and he was Michael Jordan

Yeah, no doubt about it, he is the greatest ever. Jazz produced many great drummers, e.g., Krupa, Belson, Morello, and others. Buddy Rich led the way though. Krupa used to wonder how Rich and Belson could be so fast.

Buddy the greatest showman and technique but a few others like Sonny Payne Eddie Shaunessy Louis Bellson. Original front men were Chick Webb and Gene Krupa as far as big band drummers. No footage exists on Chick Webb, died young from disease but he's a legend

Double bass drumming, crazy poly rhythm drumming all sorts of amazing crazy phenomenal chops drumming from thousands of drummers; *BUT!!* NO ONE can do what Buddy did between the Ride cymbal Snare and BD (not to mention his left foot or just 'snare drum work by itself.') You can have all the double bass drumming you want lol but again Ride, Sn, BD -----> *Untouchable* and `not obtainable by anyone so far, *close* but no cigars. Peace
