He's doing this with 1970's era equipment. No double or triple bass drum pedals, or even high tech lightning fast single pedals. It would be interesting to see how some of these amazing drummers of today would do on old equipment.

There's effortless speed and precision in his drumming like he was born with two sticks in his hands. Clean hits, smooth, beautiful dynamics, musical interpretation, and a certain joy in his playing. Never does he ever get cramped up at mega-high speed and his movement around the kit is also lightning fast. Buddy was a drumming athlete with no comparison. Gifted and did he ever perform and give people their money's worth. What an entertainer. I understand he was quite the perfectionist, part of what made him great.

I've been a Buddy Rich fan for 60 years. He is still a timeless all time great. I need to hear El Estepario Siberiano play with a big band to get a real sense of his musically brilliance.

Good suggestion! I wonder if he reads, bcuz Shaughnessy and Rich both did. You need to in order to catch all the horn accents and kicks.

Don't you think that El Estepario Siberiano would like to listen to the amazing Carter Beauford? Especially as Carter is just like El SS in that he too is ambidextrous in his drumming. Carter doesn't care which hand it is. They are amazingly equal.

The quick grabbing of the cymbals comes from the great Buddy Rich, and Neil Peart was a huge fan of Buddy's. You can see Buddy's influence here, and Neil even participated in several Buddy Rich tribute albums. What an amazing performance!

I never like to say anyone is "THE" greatest of all time, too many variables to account for. But Buddy Rich can be called the Godfather of drums because he influenced so many of the great drummers from the 60's, 70's, 80's and beyond.

C’mon. It’s not even close. For once it’s an easy call, you don’t have to pretend to “play fair”, or try hiding it behind “different genres”.
This bastard blew us all off the wagon. That’s all there is to it.
We can do all the usual apples and oranges stuff talking about the REST of us, from 2nd place on down. 🤷🏼‍♂️

he played at my high school around 1975. he had a broken arm and still killed it with one arm. lol when I listen to El Esteperio doing his one handed stuff it reminds me of that.

I saw this live....they had at least 5 Battle offs that I saw, Ed Shaugnessey amazing drummer, the Tonight Show drummer at the time for Johnny Carson....maybe more battles possibly.... This is the type stuff that inspired me to play years ago... Gene, Buddy, Louie, Chick, Roy, Tony, Ian, Ginger, Bonham, Cobham, etc. so, so many greats but Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Ginger Baker, Ian Paice are my greatest early influences first inspirations...

He demanded perfection from his fellow musicians much the same way Benny Goodman did. In the 80's my wife and me would go to Disneyland just to watch Buddy perform in the Carnation Plaza. No extra fee. What a treat that was.

I saw Buddy perform, up close & personal - THIRTEEN TIMES. As great as these videos are - it was TEN times better in person. The tunes he played prior to his big solo at the end, were like the greatest foreplay before the greatest climax you ever had - the beautiful foreplay made it, as I said TEN times better in person. His lead sax player, Steve (don't remember his last name) was great too & always had a big solo before Buddy would perform his. What made Buddy the best was he made my adrenaline flow & hair stand up on the back of my neck ten times more than any other performer & shouldn't that be the measure of who was the best? And I saw some other great big bands perform - Maynard Ferguson, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Harry James, Weather Report....

My answer to your first question is he is definitely one of the 2 greatest drummers in the history of drumming. At least until lately.
Favorite drummers? My favorite drummers are not the greatest drummers in the world. But they kick a** on stage.
    Jerry Mercer from April Wine.
Whoever the original drummer from reo speedwagon was.
    Artimus Pyle
    Eric Carr
    Ian Paice
    Charlie Watts

Buddy always gave 110% and he expected it from his band as well -- and its well known if they didnt play up to par they would hear about it (loudly) on the tour bus, Buddy was known as a harsh taskmaster when it came to performance quality

I started playing drums in 1965. My teacher was a studio drummer who did music for commercials, TV shows, and movies. My teacher's GOAT was Buddy Rich. He told me if you can be one, one-millionth as good as Buddy, you'll be an amazing drummer. Buddy is my GOAT and I'm still trying to be one, one-millionth as good as Buddy.
    Today, I like Greyson Nekutman

Buddy Rich was the "Freak"ing Goat for his time! It's always amazing to watch him play, EES said his new band is a jazz band, so i am excited to hear what they produce, and maybe then you can do a side by side comparison with him and Buddy Rich see whos faster in the jazz style !!!!!!

Oh I was hoping you'd do a reaction to that Tonight Show battle. Utterly insanely good.
It was Bonham, then these 2 that showed me you don't need a gigantic kit to play well or have every song covered. So amazingly much you can do with the bare bones setup they have.
Who won? The audience, of course!

In that first clip, I don't know who the drummer on the left was, but he was freakin awesome! Buddy Rich, however....FKN PHENOMENAL!! Especially, on those crossovers! I don't know of any rock drummers who can even come close to that, with the exception of Neal Peart from Rush and maybe Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters. Unfortunately, none of these guys are no longer with us.😢

Thanks for your view :D I think you can say that Buddy in many ways set the standard for big band jazz. But he had it from i.a. Joe Jones, Chick Webb and Sonny Payne.
Buddy had a formidable technique and he came out of a vaudeville tradition where he was on stage from the age of two. When be-bop came in the late 1940s onwards, Buddy tried to adapt to the new style - exposed by e.g. Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Art Blakey - and later Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Marcus Gilmore etc... Buddy kept his own style - and he was unique.

Buddy is still in the top 3-5 GOATS on drums........ and yes i know and have seen that newly emerged Estepario Seberiano..... he is also TOTALLY AMAZING..... but he is standing on the shoulders of Buddy Rich and the like.........
