I just got Chris Roberts' Chocolate symmetrical board. I will only ride twin tail boards from now on. Your advice about putting a pair of new trucks on a twin tail board is right on because I am riding my old trucks, and one side definitely feels looser than the other, so that plays mind games with me a bit. I'm going to replace the bushings with new ones first, and then if that doesn't do it, put on a totally new pair of trucks. Great video! (Love the new Peralta dragon wheels by the way!)
Symmetrical boards should have been standard way before becoming invented in 2023. I've always hated the difference in the nose and tail difference in prior pro models
Don't let 8.7" wide confuss you. Its 8.5" at the trucks. I just got Indie Hollows 144mm trucks and Powell's Andy's 52mm Nano Cubic wheels that bring it all out to the edge at the truck mounts. Sweet. Or..Powell Mini Logo Trucks 8.38" and again Powell's Andy's Nano Cubics wheels. If you gonna run Powell's Christopher Hiett's Nano Rats wheels then you gonna want a little wider truck. Good luck this info is hard won!
Thanks for the video man, I recently discovered your channel and dig it much. I’m also an old guy coming back to skating after a nearly 30 year hiatus. I’m fucking 53 now. I was always an Indy guy, growing up skating in 1980s San Jose and SF. You were laughed at if you rode Tracker or Gullwing. Anyway, that is until I tried Ace in my middle age skating and I will never go back. My Ace 55s turn like no other for me, the truck I always wanted when I was a younger. You’re an inspiration to old fucks like myself! Thanks for the vids keep them coming please 🙏✌🏼🙌
Nice set up and in deep break down. I've been thinking on my next purchases and they are nearly the same with almost the same tweaks, Heron 2, aces AF1 Hollows 55, will use my F4 99 full conicals 56mm until I hunt down some dragons. I had some wheelbite issues with Aces. Hard bones bottom bushing and stock ace classics at top solved the problem keeping that ace sharp turn. I use Inverted Kingpins, Grindking at the moment, shaving 2 mm from the top bushing but that's just part of my set up madness. Congrats on your progression.
Interesting how this concept is coming back. Mike V came out with a symmetrical board in 1989! The barnyard graphic board was an epic board and ahead of it's time..
Man your skating is so good, my heron egg is going to be a wall board until I feel I can use all its features. I think twin tips are going to be popular this year.
Got the same set-up! ACE AF1 55 Hollow trucks (with the ACE Hard Bushings) but with Powell Dragons 54mm V4. I love it and I think there should be more symmetrical decks!
Very interesting indeed. I’ve always thought that the idea of a symmetrical deck was a sound one. I recently tried a set of Ace Trucks myself for my pump track board. Ace 66s rather than Indy 159s. I have to say the standard bushes are great for that purpose but I wanted it soft and steery anyway. Something I’d recommend having a look at is Enuff 159s. I fitted those on my typical transition board and for relatively cheap trucks they are actually excellent. British made too.
Think you nailed that setup Jon, great idea with the fresh trucks mines like a boomerang when I'm not on it, goes off to the left at a sharp turn because I do more frontside. Would seriously consider one of those for just the same as you said mini ramps and fun stuff. I love symmetrical decks just not enough of them out there.
love this board. first symmetrical. love the uniform wear/razortailing. Wish they'd make a version with a SLIGHTLY longer wheelbase but otherwise this is a forever in my quiver board. I hope they never stop making it
My first board (after 30 years) was symetrical and it was great to (re)learn stuff without worrying about which way was front. My current board is not symetrical and I use it the other way around. I don't do much with the nose so prefer the larger area on the tail. My next board is definitely going to be symetrical, I still don't understand what's the point of assymetrical boards and I'm glad that there is a bit more offer like Andy's and Crob's. Keep on shredding!
Hey Jon, I would give the Ace bushing another chance. They usually take a bit to break in but once they do they ride really well. You mentioned you tightened the trucks quite a bit, if the bushings are still in decent shape try popping them back in and break them in at the pump track. If you do decide to stick with your bones bushings putting a small washer on the bottom bushing will help take the bushings to the correct height otherwise the geometry of your truck will change which is something you may or may not notice. Great skating!
Many thanks for the advice dude. Yeah I popped the washer under the bottom bushing as I’ve found in the past with Indys that it works better so did it here out of habit 😂 I’m 90kg and 6’3” and the ACE bushings just felt too soft, but with your advice I’ll give them another whirl !!
I’m a big fan of aces but also found the stock bushings in rideable being a gentleman of a certain stature 😂 I rode bones hardcores for a while but found they didn’t fit very well causing more wheelbite due to the shorter lower bushing and the hanger wobbled somewhat due to smaller circumference. After a brief spell on khiros I’m now running the ace hard bushings and really rate them I’m now running
Hi Jon, what do think about the mini logo trucks 8.38 compare to the ace 55 for this Board Setup? I use the ace af1 66 with ace Hard Bushings ( 87kg ) for the 9.1 Anderson Deck an my 169 Indy on an 10" Deck turns quiet perfekt.
I've been riding the Heron 2 (with Indy 159 and 54mm Dragons) for a couple weeks now. I also bought the 9.13 because I couldn't resist, I love the shape of it. But I've found it too big for me (I'm 5'6")...so now I'm considering getting the 8.45. How do you find the Heron 2 compared to the 8.45? Is it even worth it to try it out, or should I just stick with the Heron 2? I'd like to learn more flatland stuff...I also do a little bit of mini ramp stuff. Thanks!
I used to ride the 9.13, now i ride flight 8.75 and i don’t know if i buy the heron 2. I’m 5’6 but i’m used to larger boards. I had this real 8.5 that i couldn’t get used to. Do you think the heron 2 is more like a 8.5? I wanted a deck with a smaller wheelbase to impropve my ollies. I don’t know if i get the heron 2
Hey dude, yeah I should have said, but I popped a washer under the bottom bushing to get them to work the same, (hopefully this is visible in the close ups? Cheers JB
Great vid. How does the round edge feel with rail tricks? Still stable? I do a lot of rail to rail nonsense, so it’s pretty much all that’s holding me back.
Not a fan of flight or vx. They feel fine when they're brand new but they get razor tail quickly because of the 5 ply design. Plus the top ply is impossibly hard, and prevents the hardware from sitting flush on the deck. I've actually broken bolts trying to tighten them down all the way.
Hello John, I 'm thinking to build the same set up : Heron 2 + Ace af1 55 Hollow but with 56 mm powell peralta Dragon Wheels. Do you think that feet without wheel bits? Even if the Ave bushings are very smooth. By the way, I started skating last year ( I'm 40 years old) thanks to convince me it's still possible ! Enjoy!
Hey dude!! Yeah, sounds perfect !! Try with no risers and if you get a little bite pop in 1/8 inch pads. Should be ok without, I’m pretty heavy and clumsy and enjoy a tight carve ?? Let me know how you get on !! Best Jon
Is this board more like a 8.75 board or a 8.5 board? I ride 8.75 flight deck and wanted to try a smaller wheelbase for ollies, but I think 8.5 width too small
Hey dude Yeah I’d say this feels smaller than an 8.75 popsicle? The reason being it’s egg shaped so where your feet are is more like 8.5”. It would definitely feel bigger than an 8.5 I’d imagine?
Love your videos man! This deck is just a bit too large for me, I will stick with 8.5 flight decks. However the symetrical design is a great concept. I ride my decks not paying attention to where is the nose or tail, so it would be absolutely fantastic for me needs. If only less than 160 pounds and less than 8.8 or 8.7 haha. Best regards - Tom, Polish skater from Staines (east side haha xD).
With popsicle shape decks the nose is generally bigger than the tail. There are a few other symmetrical boards out there, but they are usually marketed as symmetrical if symmetrical.
@@JonBishopSkate I had bought some 215s independent but they looked too wide for my taste, I ended up going with the 159s hollow forged, the only sad part is the forged version doesn’t have the 6 hole baseplate. I have them with a Alan gelfand Hollie tank deck. And it’s the lightest set up I got, considering it’s also the biggest setup I’m happy with it.

That setup looks like it rips! Great video Jon!
It’s a lot of fun dude, I’m gonna do a follow video on the trucks and once I’ve ridden it more !
I used my top washer on the bottom for the bones bushings too worked great

Awesome gear! I’ve been hearing a lot about this board & trucks.
Good to see one of my favorite TH-camrs giving em a whirl!
Many thanks for tuning in dude!
I knew you were going to review the new Andy deck. I found your channel when I looked at the first Andy Anderson deck review.
Ha ha, yeah AA has a knack of designing them ace !!
Love it man...I have a feeling this twin tail symmetry is gonna catch on soon and take off

Epic! Love it! I have the OG Heron. Still like to ride it.
Haha a surprise guest at the end!
Beat me to it 🤘
Ha ha, congrats on making it that far, I popped it in as a little Easter egg for anyone who made it through the lot 😂
Great review Jon, I've ordered mine and cant wait for it to arrive
Wicked, I recon you will love it, especially on the XC mini ramp!!
Looks like a great bowl setup! Nice one

I had (still have) the original barnyard deck. It wasn’t symmetrical. The nose was shorter than the tail.
Such a nice deck. I'd love to see it in a 7-ply. Would definitely pick one up.
Yeah can’t wait for that !!
Man your skating is so good, my heron egg is going to be a wall board until I feel I can use all its features. I think twin tips are going to be popular this year.

Great review!! You gain a lot of speed in your 5050!!
So yeah, ACE Hard Bushings are great, try them!
You should try the Curb Killer Symmetrical 10inch egg from Heroin! It’s one of my favorites. 215’s are recommended
Thanks for the tip !

Yeah I believe the big nose is handy for street stuff, but I come from sports that use twin tips so this makes sense to me?
I pretty much only do shuv it variations so this deck made sense to me. Little bit wider than I probably need tho

Too old for switch I got some fakie tricks tho also don't bounce so much at 51🤣
I got this deck recently and i'll never ride a non twin kick, much less a popsicle, ever again
You are a board expert
Oww mate what a shame that the bushings didn't work. I really like the surfy feel of them.
I think I’ll give them another try, I guess I’m used to what I’m used to ?!

Do the Bones medium bushings change the truck geometry at all?
How did you set the bones bushings in the Ace trucks with regard to washers etc?

Pretty sure it’s 8.5 across the trucks so there’s only a bit of extra width towards the middle.
Actually, under both truck holes the board is 8.5. The widest part is 8.7!
Yeah, it seemed to line up well, feels secure in the rail stand. I was gonna use 8.38 mini logo trucks, but these seem to do the job?
Bones bushings aren’t the same size as af1 bushings though?
Yeah, I measured them and it just needed a washer under the bottom bushing to make it the saner.
does this deck its just for bowl/trans?
I think it’s more for street, but works well for everything tbh ?!
To be honest i have never seen a board chipping sideways... i would be more interested how the curve is afecting landing primo...

Hi just wanted to let you know that, this deck in Australia cost $245.00 bucks! and you didn't put rails on it made me cringe.
good video anyways.
