Had a Burrago mini-scale version of this car as a kid and it wasn't my favorite because I thought it didn't exist. Now I find it to be one of the coolest cars ever 😄

The newer gen was so ugly, I think they tried too hard to make it look retro. I always liked the original new beetle and one with awd and a vr6 has to be insanely fun. Even a tdi that I drove was like a go cart and the low end torque made it surprisingly quick and fun especially in the mountains. I’ve been thinking of picking up a tdi for a commuter. A lot of people call them a girls car but I don’t care, they’re so much fun with great gas mileage.
Takes me back to being a kid, driving one of these in Midtown Madness 2 on PC with a thrustmaster Ferrari f430 wheel. Seems much quicker in real life than I expected. Love the sound and that gearbox with those nice close ratios!

I love how the second part of the ignition system isn’t necessarily a modern Start/Stop button, but rather like the one you find on an 80s arcade machine!
Love at first sight. I remember when i was a kid and midtown madness game came out it has that car on its cover and it caught my eye immediately, since then i love it and its on my fav car list 😀👍🏻

I remember when these came out it would have been ‘99-2000 from memory they raced here in Australia in the gtp series They had great hopes and on paper they should have done really well! but unfortunately they struggled especially on Bathurst even the Aussie made Magna and Camry was more of a match for it, and all the wrx’s and evo’s were out front trying to keep the 400hp gts commodore’s away!

I see people in the comments notice that you were a bit sad or conservative, but this is from 2016 when you weren't as confident as now. For me personally, I like this style more. It's a bit hypnotizing and ASMR, which makes me more invested in the review. It's ok to be energetic, but not everytime. Sometimes it's a good ideea to tone it down a bit and take your time, especially for ultra rare cars like this one. Some cars are not just cars, they are pieces of hystory and such a calmer style of presentation is better suited.
If the old TT and 911 had an angry baby , this would be it.

I saw one of these in The Woodlands, Texas, USA, about 2 months ago. It was absolutely wild to see one in the flesh, especially as they never sold it here.

Editing......if I had one, it would get some Turbos and it would be glorious.... and if that Haldex(if spelling is correct) is computer controlled, get it more rear biased and it would be a damn weapon 🤣
I've seen one in person can't remember the number but the owner also had a MK4 r32 bi turbo which he had built with hints from his beetle it had the same wheels and carbon interior.
Love this car and would definitely have it in my “Money no Object” garage.
Canadian tuner HPA built a twin turbo version.
The same company that has their R32 twin turbo engine n Gran Turismo.
I think it’s all HGP parts though.
With those looks and price tag, this would've been incredible with 400 bhp plus. I didn't realise they had carbon fibre trim. It looks like it came from the same stable as the Clio, but without the horrendous build quality and back to the drawing board redesign.
You guys have improved so much over the years. Big up!
I have the Audi tt mk1 3.2 convertible which I went out in it today, sounds just the same which is beautiful. I too didn't know they made them in the beetle, awesome.
My all time favourite Beetle. Shame that VW canned the 2011 Beetle R concept. It would have been a great successor to this VR6 legend.

Thanks for Gran Turismo 4 for introduced this car to me, it changed my perspective about Volkswagen Beetle as Boring Hippie type car for the masses lol ...

Back in the days when i worked at volkswagen i hated to work on the new beetle. It has a very small engine bay. I only can imagine what a nightmare it would be with the vr6. Great sound tho

We never got these here in the states. Found out about these from Project Gotham Racing and Gran Turismo back in the early 2000s.

VR6 is in the Top 5 Best Sounding 6 Cylinder Engines ever Made, But For me Number 1 and 2 goes to the 90's Japanese Straight 6 ,2jz Supra and the R34 Engine
As a 2003 beetle owner I’m baffled as to how VW made that engine fit. Mine’s a tdi and that’s squeezed in !!!

The turbo s beetles are faster than the rsi. I own a turbo s. Not as cool as the rsi but its still a blast to drive.

It's very tame by todays standards, but looked great. It promised more than it delivered, 250hp isn't a lot.

Awesome car, but a heads up, that lens is very disorienting. Look at the car and the road and the trees as you move just in the first few seconds. It's difficult to watch.
