Hey, if Russia can arm itself with weaponry from Iran and North Korea, then there is no reason whatsoever why Ukraine should be barred from using long-range weaponry from its allies to attack anywhere in Russia.

@@davereynolds3403 That is nonsense. In 1991, the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact dissolved, and many former Soviet republics became independent again after this dissolution. Independent states recognized under international law have the right to decide for themselves whether or not they want to join another economic or military alliance. No state has the right to interfere in the national decisions of another independent state recognized under international law, and certainly not by force of arms. Whether Russia accepts sovereign decisions in its neighboring countries or not is completely irrelevant. International law is international law.

Toward the heart of unjust war.
Tver shook beneath the endless blast,
The earth trembled, the die was cast.
Thirty thousand tons explode in flame-
    Justice strikes in Ukraine’s name.
Seen from space, a beacon bright,
A nation’s cry turned into light.
For every school, for every town,
For churches razed and hopes torn down.
    Hospitals shattered, power lost,
The Russian missiles scorched the cost.
Yet now the scales begin to tip-
Each drone a hand to break the whip.
Their task fulfilled, they won’t return,
In fiery bursts, their spirits burn.

Long-range weapons won't benefit Ukraine at this stage. Even the U.S. Secretary of Defense has acknowledged this. Russia has already repositioned its high value targets, making it ineffective to invest billions in such weapons. It would lead nowhere. Ukraine is suffering significant losses on the battlefield, and the most prudent course of action now would be to pursue peace talks. At this point, it's evident that Zelensky's leadership is linked to prolonging the war, which is a tragic situation.

It's not simply "Putin's red line", although the way Russia could retaliate of course is going to be relevant (which is not likely going to involve nuclear weapons). The bigger issue here is that the West doesn't have huge stockpiles of these long-range weapons, and the production capacity of these weapons is limited. This, combined with the fact that in case of attacks deep into Russia, the Ukrainian gains as a result of that won't allow Ukraine to then switch to shorter range weapons instead of the longer-range weapons to keep on targeting the targets deep into Russia, would cause problems.
The way weapons like ATACMS are supposed to be used, is to deal temporary knockout blows by taking out important facilities, allowing an advance to be made toward the enemy's positions. And then, with that advance made, you can switch to shorter range weapons. With limited supplies and limited production capacity, one needs to avoid using ATACMS in a war of attrition. If you make an advance on the battlefield by using ATACMS and you then need to keep on using ATACMS to make sure the enemy won't be able to undo the gains, then the enemy can simply wait until you run out of ATACMS.
This is the main reason why the Pentagon is opposed to granting Ukraine the right to use long-range weapons against Russian targets. It won't allow Ukraine to win, and there is a risk that when the supply of ATACMS goes down later that Ukraine could end up losing more than it gained. And low ATACMS stocks would cause problems for Taiwan, because Taiwan would require a large number of ATACMS in the opening minutes of any Chinese attack. The US will want to ship large numbers of ATACMS to Taiwan in case tensions increase there, to exert pressure on China.
Another issue here is that Russia is getting experience with using their air defense systems against ATACMS. China can then benefit a from that experience. Unlike in the Ukraine war, Taiwan will need to fire a massive number of ATACMS in the opening minutes of the war against Chinese targets. Currently, the assumption is that due to the Chinese air defense systems never have seen ATACMS, that the success rate of shooting down an ATACMS will be low. But with the Russian experience this could increase to, say, 50%. It may be a lot better than the Russian success rate, because China will be able to prepare based on the Russian experience during peace time when they are still preparing for the coming war. In contrast, Russia is always to some degree wrong-footed in this war due to the West giving Ukraine arms that can exploit weaknesses in the way Russia has positioned itself in this war.
China can then position its air defense systems in an optimal way before the war starts. China can also use the information Russia has about the explosive charges of the various Western weapons systems to make sure bunkers etc. offer enough protection. The impact of a Taiwanese counterattack with ATACMS will then be severely blunted. Add to that that Taiwan may not be able to get a large number of ATACMS if Ukraine starts to use these weapons against targets deep in Russia, and you understand that this is the main reason why the Pentagon doesn't like this idea of giving Ukraine permission for this.
We should also consider here that the US government is far more competent on military issues than most European governments. The US defense secretary is a former four-star general while most of his European counterparts have no military experience at all. So, it's not that Biden is spooked by Putin's threats and that we in Europe are more knowledgeable than our US counterparts. But Russian threats to the West are taken ito account by the US, not based on Putin's threats but based on a realistic assessment on how Putin could react. For example, the US has a base in Eastern Syria. Russia could arm Assad's army with weapons system Russia so far has refused to give to Assad to allow Assad to attack that base.

The biggest question is not whether Ukraine uses long-range missiles, but who is operating them.
If Ukraine owned it and operated it independently, then it could reach Moscow or even the Pacific Ocean, there would be nothing to say.
But the fact is that Ukrainians are not allowed to operate these long-range weapons alone because it involves authorizing the use of secrets including satellites and codes. In another words, it is obvious that these missiles could only be launched by NATO forces.
Why don't the United States and the West fully authorize Ukrainians to produce these missiles themselves and directly access NATO's secret information? 😢

I have a question. How exactly will long-range rockets change the trajectory of war? The Russians will simply disperse their forces and ammunition or put them out of reach. Additionally, the Russians have very sophisticated air defenses that will take care of many of those missiles. Furthermore, if necessary, the Russians will put their planes in the Urals and even in Vladivostok and refuel them mid-flight in order to continue pounding the Ukrainian lines if necessary. Then what you going to do? Give the Ukrainians intercontinental missiles? The reality is that those missiles, like all the other wonder weapons that the West has given to the Ukrainians before, will do little or nothing at all to change the dynamics of the conflict because what the Ukrainians really need is men power and the West simply can’t 3D print them nor is willing to go into a war economy to produce the quantity of weapons they need.
