The main narrative here that Somerset was a Gaelic hero fighting the wicked Vikings is misleading. Somerled was of Norse partial descent himself and the Vikings of the West Coast were largely of Gaelic descent and spoke Gaelic as well as Norse. The Western Isles stayed under Norwegian rule for over 100 years after the death of Somerled.
Somairle (Somerled) run the Vikings out of Argyll, Kintyre and Lorne. Then Clan Donald run them off the Isles. Somairle was a Scot although he married Ragnhild, daughter of Olafr Godredsson. Y dna is passed from father to son, so you can be assured that every descendant of Somairle has R1b Celtic dna. If they don't there's a problem.
@@michellearmstrong7903 No Michelle. Even the Clan Donald USA dna tests are showing that a very high percentage of MacDonalds that have been tested (around 80 % if I can remember correctly) show R1b y haplogroup Celtic dna. Coincidentally the Clan Donald USA dna tests that have tried to justify the strange German dna of the bogus Clan Donald clan chiefs have proven the opposite, that only a very small minority of MacDonalds have German/Scandinavian R1a dna.

I am in USA, a descendant of McDonald's on paternal side and McAllister's on maternal side. My wife claims that explains my stubbornness and cranky nature!
I love that this was released around the same time as the dna projects proving Somerled and his line are Norwegian along their Y chromosome and not at all Celtic.
@@DarkRyderWhisky Well of course. A bogus history was needed to try to explain the strange R1a Aryan dna of most of the chiefs. The project pages say it themselves, "the majority of the Clan is R1b"; that's Celtic dna. So how do you square the fact that the majority of the clan is Celtic but the chiefs are Aryan? This malarkey from the project just does not cut it, "our R1a chiefs’ ancestors first appeared on the Scottish scene around 836AD". So we are suppose to believe that just shortly after the British Isle started to be invaded by marauding Scandinavian Vikings our clan picked a Scandinavian Viking to lead us, lol. Nonsense. And besides if Somairle (his name was not Somerled) was Scandinavian then why did he not have Nordic I1 dna, instead of Aryan R1a dna? I don't believe that fairy tale at all. This chart shows the prominence of R1b Celtic dna in Scotland and not a lot of R1a Aryan dna. www.dnaweekly.com/blog/a-map-of-europe-based-on-haplogroups/
@@michaelmacdonell2986 the clan genetic database is one of the largest and most studied on the planet. You're extremely wrong. The fact that you say "R1A Aryan" which isn't a thing, and that the majority of the clan is R1b(which would be news to thousands of members who have contributed to the Y-database) says all anyone needs to know on this matter. "R1b is Celtics dna" is another huge clue that you're clueless about this subject. Almost all of clan Donald and it's various branching clans are R1a. I'm sure it's upsetting when science proves you wrong. R1A is one of the three primary haplogroups of Scandinavia along with I and N with R1b being less prevalent but still very common. There's no such thing as "Viking" or "Aryan" dna. Aryan is a blanket term covering a large group of Indo-European tribes included in which is both celts and germans.
@@DarkRyderWhisky Have you even read the ClanDonald USA dna project pages? This is a direct quote from the project pages speaking of Clan Donald "the majority of the Clan is R1b". I have read dna study pages that have called R1b specifically Celtic dna. The chart that I included in my last post says "R1b: Celtic, Basque, Italic, Frisian, Saxon" "R1a: Slavic, Kurgan, Aryan" "I1: Germanic (Nordic)". I agree there could be R1a Aryan dna within the Scandinavian Vikings, but I1 Nordic is the prominent dna for Scandinavian Vikings. Regarding the project's quote "our R1a chiefs’ ancestors first appeared on the Scottish scene around 836AD", well if you believe that then I have a bridge for sale that you might be interested in, lol.

My grandfather, who was born in Scotland, talked about our family and the massacre. But, I haven't been able to verify with dna. I just have all of the names of my grandparents a d great grandparents who sailed to Boston from Scotland in the early 1900's. Wish I could get more information though
@@michaelmacdonell2986 they don't ,they are Vikings DNA procedure same as the McNeil's of barra
@@michaelmacdonell2986 except we don't. The fact is, our Y DNA is Norse infact.
@@jackbootshamangaming4541 Your Y dna may be Norse. But the very high percentage of Clan Donald has R1b Celtic Y dna.

Hope Ronald isn't trying to take over the clan. That guy is an absolute clown.
Ronald is just fine, but you have a big red nose.
Do your homework, he is!

Lmao, but all you guys wanna come to Europe and UK, some mighty and great people!
He also in no way insulted anyone, he said he's proud to be a Macdonald.
Yes and true heir to the British throne. Ever wonder why things have gone so badly for the imposters who currently rule.
I am in USA, a descendant of McDonald's on paternal side and McAllister's on maternal side. My wife claims that explains my stubbornness and cranky nature!
Much respect to the MacDonald's, from a clan Campbell descendant.
And the same to you from a McDonald, Descendant of McIian, Clan Chieftan, Glencoe.
Here here I applaud you descendant of clan Campbell from a clan relative Donald from chieftan glencoe from Nova Scotia
Had Campbell remained royal to the clans my would not have been murdered and the disgrace that sits on the throne of England would not exist
no one will forgive or forget the campbell treachery. cursed for generations and still to this day not given food or bed in the highlands.
Just found out I'm a McDonald. Was my great grandmother's maiden name. Pretty interesting.

I love that this was released around the same time as the dna projects proving Somerled and his line are Norwegian along their Y chromosome and not at all Celtic.
Don't believe everything that you hear, especially that bogus history coming from the Clan Donald USA dna project.
@@michaelmacdonell2986 riiiiiight as opposed to the exact same information and database being used by the clann in Scotland.

Ehh, why they speak of Sumarlid like he was a scott?
According to Y-DNA studies, he was a Norse-Gael. The current MacDonald Clan Chiefs are all of the R1a haplogroup - specifically of R-YP326 downstream and they are all historically descended from Somerled (as are many MacDougalls and MacAllisters), who himself would have descended from Norsemen from Norway.
