Tighten embodies the trope of evil cannot comprehend good. He can’t understand why having powers doesn’t immediately win over Roxanne, nor why anyone would want to be a hero if it doesn’t get them the girl. Ultimately, Hal couldn’t recognize the flaws in his view of what it meant to be a superhero.

    • @comicbookreviewer4856
      @comicbookreviewer4856 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

what made Megamind work as a counterpart to Hal is even know Roxanne rejected him and felt like he screwed up he never went after her and knew he messed up and went back to being a villain showing despite losing her trust he would never go and cross a line showing he at least knew he messed up and going back to his original work is like following your old path

    • @speedracer2008

@@comicbookreviewer4856 Here’s another point about Tighten I wanted to make. I think he serves as a super-powered version of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. Both have glaring similarities. They start out as toxic, but harmless, buffoons, who lust after the female protagonist. They also believe that all it takes to win the female protagonist’s heart are exterior qualities, like beauty or superpowers, in Tighten’s case. They don’t consider that their own negative qualities, such as their egos, selfishness, and overcompensation, are the reasons they don’t get the girl. They also show jealousy towards anyone who wins the heart of their desired lady. Finally, both become more evil as the story progresses, resorting to violence against those who they believe took their woman away. In that way, Tighten is even more terrifying. Gaston is scary enough, considering that his entitlement, unwillingness to take no for an answer, and resorting to violent measures when he doesn’t get his way, are all negative qualities that real people possess and cause them to hurt other people. Now, imagine a person with the same negative qualities, but having superpowers, to boot. That’s Tighten in a nutshell.

@@speedracer2008 I think you're to hard on tighten, he's more like spiderman in my book, both shy nerds who don't even try to get the girl until they get powers. Plus the difference between Hal and Gaston is that Hal only ever wanted 1 women, Gaston could have had any women he wanted, Hal was that awkward nerd who wanted the girl but didn't think she would ever go for him, plus Roxane did take advantage of him a lot. You can tell Hal generally did care about Roxane, that's why he didn't bust in at the diner scene.

Titan is a very accurate satire on the "nice guy" type!! For anyone unfamiliar, it's someone who believes they only need to acquire power to make them attractive, are interested in a prospective partner purely for selfish reasons (sex & ego-boost), who bully others despite having been victims themselves, and who are so focused on resentment & self-indulgence that they struggle to contribute anything positive to the society they exist within.
Hal's evolution throughout the movie entails a warning of sorts, to my mind? These kinds of people are often treated as a sort of joke, and their lack of self-awareness can perhaps be amusing. But when they do manage to gain any kind of power over other people, it can lead to reslly problematic results! We see this in individuals who are "promoted to the level of their incompetence", guys who harrass gamer-girls online... even (in the darkest instances) in school shooters or planners of domestic terrorist attacks.
It would've been great to see the video presenter maybe speculate a little on what changes in Hal's life could've potentially led him down a different path, away from the 'incel' mentality & towards greater maturity...? It's a real challenge present within our own social contexts, particularly in the internet age.
(BTW Cinema Therapy did a good episode on this character, his psychological issues and how one might help or deal with such an individual IRL?)

Is it wrong to identify with some things about Hal? I guess the only difference is that I'm too shy to even talk to a woman. And my mother always taught me empathy since I was little. The only things we have in common is this fear of rejection, the fact that we are "Underdogs" and the fact that we contribute nothing to society. I'm ashamed to be like this, I had a terrible childhood, and because of that I am this "bloodsucking" for society. And what makes me even more angry is that I can't express myself to anyone, because everyone thinks I'm trying to get attention. Life Sucks.

Hope you have some outlet via community volunteering or similar. I started out cripplingly introverted as a teen, but learnt a huge amount through such activities about connecting to different types of people, & have met so many amazing individuals over the years in that space. Hal/Titan doesn’t have what it takes to be a superhero because of his egotism and lack of empathy towards other people and he only done it to get in the pants of Roxanne.
Roxanne is the very same woman who made it clear that she’s not romantically interested in Hal and she sees him as a fellow co-worker/cameraman and good friend.
If he had someone or an accountability partner in his life to show him the error of his ways, all of this could have been prevented and he would be an awesome superhero fighting for the greater good and working together with Megamind.

A lot of nerds more look at heroes with powers in awe of their fantastical powers. Superhero mythology, while encouraging altruism, is massively self empowering, and often attracts people who feel powerless or hurt by the world and allows them to fantasise about their desires.
It often inspires insecure characters obsessed with heroes like Syndrome or Reverse Flash

    • @1012-v9r

@@arcanewarrior863 Synderome has no mention of a father in a story that focuses heavily on daddy issues, as shown by Dash acting up and Violet having confidence issues when Bob is not around. Plus, Synderome decided to go into arms manufacturing and murdered innumerable innocents in order to test his weapons so that he could show off his hero synderome driven aspriation for glory in front of Bob and invalidate what he views as the whole point of a superhero: he did all that and lashed out at all superheroes just to slight one person instead of being taught better by his mother or finding a replacement rolemodel who had noble intentions rather than likely being a warmonger.
The bottom line: he's not normal, he's a sociopath (antisocial behaviour case*) who also weirdly has red hair like "tighten" and who arguably shows some signs of borderline personality disorder. It also seems to be less about insecurity and more about feeling betrayed or neglected in Synderome's case.
It could also be assumed that if glory or attention was all these characters were after they would realistically relate more to selfish an self-serving villains like The Green Goblin, Megatron or Professor James Moriarty.
As for Reverse Flash, I honestly don't know much about him, but I would guess that he's also not like the majoriety of nerds: yes those people could exist, you're absolutely right about that, but the number is likely so marginal that it would be unfair to say that these characters are like nerds in general.
If an actual nerd acts up, they can be reminded of what the heroes they looked up to would do based on what they have done in similar circumstances.

However, she said that Metroman was not her "type", so she was not impressed by superpowers or his handsome looks. She was impressed by empathy and compassion (in Bernard). Hal only had "I want what I want because it's all about ME". This story is also a re-telling of Cyrano De Bergerac. "You're a villain alright, but not a super one."
For as silly as that line is, it actually does adequately describe Hal as an antagonist
Hal is a pathetic loser, from start to finish. Gaining godlike power doesn't change that in the least. He's lacking in confidence, ambition, social intelligence, general intelligence... and to top it all off, he's just an inconsiderate, entitled dickbag, making him impossible to pity.
He lacks the charm or wit to draw people to his side, and lacks the skill or desire to do anything constructive or creative with his power. If he won, he'd probably go back to playing videogames and stealing anything that catches his eye. He has nothing going for him, and the moment he gets any level of power, he uses it to try and take by force something that can only be given freely: respect.
There is nothing respectable or redeeming about him, and that kind of helps to make him an excellent villain for this movie. Just like Megamind and Metroman, he had his power and responsibility thrust upon him without his knowledge or consent. Unlike them, he has no redeeming qualities or virtues to steer him on the right path.
And in the end, he lacks even the qualities necessary to be a "supervillain". He's just a jerk with too much power and a sense of entitlement.
