No, it shows the power of culture a society decides to practice. Culture breeds ideals or chaos.
Yandex (the Russian Google) was founded 1997, while Google itself was founded 1998. If venture capital was a bit more advanced Russia might've taken the place of Silicon Valley. A lot of innovation happened outside of US. What the US has perfected is "branding" and "scaling", and when it came to the internet those ended up being the most important skills.

But sorry you are completely mistaken.It’s widely known that google was by no means the web’s first popular search engine, in fact it actually was quite a late arrival to the search game, there were numerous other engines that preceded it (and yandax) by a considerable margin. Google didn’t become Google through being first.
Secondly, if you think Silicon Valley is what it is today purely because of Venture Capital, “branding” and “scaling”, you really have no idea, and have also somehow managed the miss the entire underlying theme that ran through the video. Which was that an authoritarian country with deeply entrenched corruption and a dubious track record for adherence to the rule of law, is not a conducive environment for innovation or entrepreneurship. Prime example: One of the guys in the video ( the mail ru guy) had his entire company taken away from him, and another, (the last guy Ilya Sachkov) is currently in a Moscow prison charged with treason.
People generally don’t want to found billion dollar companies in places where they can be extorted, confiscated or imprisoned at the drop of a hat for saying the wrong thing.
Oh and “Russia could have taken the place of Sillicon valley if Venture capital was more advanced “ bahaaha, please, don’t make me laugh. Did you not catch the part of the video where he mentioned that even as late as2004, only 8% of Russians used the Internet?
What really pisses me off is that they always film Russia in cloudy weather. Tell me this is coincidence.

Because it is. Westerners have such a skewed perception of Russia and to think that we live with instant access to information and people are still swayed by the gov-corporated intertwined mainstream media. It's quite surreal to read some things that Westerners write about Russia.

My fellow Americans for some reason think western media is immune from Americentrism but actually pushes it. Russia isn't the fatherland, that's Germany and other European countries. Russia is referred to as the motherland -- that's why it's "Mother Russia".

It's just normal that you haven't heard of it -- usage of Russia + fatherland in English cultural space is close to zero. In addition there are plenty of well known soviet war posts with the woman symbolizing Mother Russia. Whilst even I can't recall one single post with Russia depicted as a fatherland. But in Russian language there's родина (motherland) and отечество (fatherland). Take care.

The majority of R&D - in tech and medical sciences - in the States is government funded and then handed over to some private company to use (hello iphone?), often along with a massive government contract. Elon Musk’s entire, adult existence is based on government contracts and other people’s brains and work.

This was fascinating to watch. I think it's not just Russia though, similar videos could be made about a number of countries, including the US.

I really enjoyed this piece but some of the anti-Russian sentiments were laid on a bit too thick. I don't see the need for that entire "imagine we lost the cold war" - doesn't seem very constructive.

Whatever they think and do. Let's just accept that there are multiple spots where tech magic is created (not only Sillicon Valley)! We will all benefit. It was the other way around, not "shortminded depiction and comments of the reporter". The reporter made them look glorious, when in fact, virtually every gimmick pictured was not an original research but a remix of some foreign invention. (cept maybe that fusion reactor). Source: i am russian speaker from Kazakhstan and actively interested in the field.

As well, Mountain View, San Mateo, Redwood City et al, just south of San Francisco, are all cities (or suburbs of San Francisco) referred to as Silicon Valley. SRI is Stanford Research Institute in which large governmental funding was given for decades.

agreed, the us has more power internationally and is more subversive and clever about it to the point that we are willing to ignore it. the corporations and their controllers alone are a greater weapon than any government as they have no isolated masters to hold accountable and still have their own hand in the governments pocket. at this point our government can get away with much more due to how easy it is to control the flow of information to the american public since our government rarely works to reveal wide scale corruption internally without also being interrupted internally. you have to be a foreign organization like wikileaks or straight up escape to whistleblow and not get incarcerated. we are also much more immersed in our virtual world than any other country, being the biggest content creator of the world, we create what we want to believe about our government. which can be paranoia, but the paranoia is becoming affirmed more often than the belief that none of this really matters. at least the russians truly know how fucked up shit is.

It’s wild seeing all of these old comments with the entire world now loathing Russia and seeing it as a joke.
The map presented at 10:35 is wrong. Most traffic on the internet passes through a US based server, as much as 80%. So if someone in Russia wants to email someone else in Russia it is likely that it will pass through a US server on its way. In early 2000s Russian government placed several court approved requests for information and was refused by West based companies that operate in Russia. Because they claimed that the information is stored outside of Russian jurisdiction. As a solution Russia passed a law to force any company that operates in Russia to store information in Russia.

Seems fair to me. After all, they're probably dodging taxes in their home country and that motivated the move. Plus, if they aren't spying on Russia or acting in someway against Russia, they shouldn't be too worried. And if things get scary, they can just shut down and uproot - quietly that is.
Yeah russia feels it should be able to pass laws on how their citizen's data is stored and handled but the companies felt the laws were too draconian so they refused conduct business there, sounds reasonable to me.
The US has also run into similar issues, especially with information out of the five eyes. However, they don’t respond by forcing these companies to cease operations or change locations. They don’t even bother prohibiting access to this content. This would only have the effect of limiting innovation and progress.

But the government budget of Iran is less than 8% of GDP. What percentage of GDP is the combined federal, state and local government budget in the USA?

Impressed today? For me it felt like a fact of history though... Why did you think USSR had the ability to challenge as a parallel world super power along with the US? An aggressive military? A merciless spy network such as KGB? It wasn't the core, not even counting the likely fact that they backlashed and put Kremlin in huge reputation crisis (along with the already complicated bad reputation associated with BOTH communism and Russian empire). It was because they had a lot of experts, especially in areas like STEM (but many great artists/literature experts, etc. existed too in Russia, especially in the Soviet period). Remember it was them, not USA who sent the 1st satellite and human being into the space. Just look around in USA institutions and industries. Is it that uncommon to see some Russian experts around? (Who are obviously educated in the former Soviet Union?) From my experience that is definitely a NO.

Im not even Russian and I found this soooooooo condescending! Why always the hate, fair play for investment in science and tech. Why does it have to be that a country is copying the US if it seeks to further develop in these areas. Obviously a city in the middle of Siberia is going to try and attract great minds through making it beautiful and providing a wonderful setting through which individuals can raise a family and pursue further academic interests. This isn't copying silicon valley. I understand that Russia is certainly not perfect but this documentary was far from showing a creepy side to Russia and ended up pushing an outdated US propaganda roll. Disappointed.

The Russian FB or VK is actually way more convenient and useful. With it you can stream movies, listen to music, watch porn and those are merely some examples. At first it was a copy and paste of FB but it has evolved while FB has become obsolete. A major downside to VK is it has very few English speaking users but they do exist.

Sometimes it's hard to say whether this is a documentary or a piece of propaganda full of clichés. Those men choirs on background, banya, vodka, civil rights, Putin. Balalaika and bears are somewhat missing attention. :)

A really brief look of some 10 minutes (to talk with a normie CEO of a mainstream internet company) and then a general overview of science and startups in Russia [SPOILER ALERT: it's not exactly booming]. But it was nice to realize that I know more about Russia's internet than Bloomberg.

This is exactly how they do tech in America. There wasn't a single aspect of this that I haven't experienced in my own career. The language is the different but the concepts are exactly the same. I would love to know how this was classified as "creepy". This is classic ethnocentrism.
