  • Today's famous Grave visit, I pay tribute and visit the final resting place of legendary football player and England world cup winner Alan Ball
Alan James Ball MBE (12 May 1945 - 25 April 2007) was an English professional football player and manager. He was the youngest member of England's 1966 World Cup winning team and played as a midfielder for various clubs, scoring more than 180 league goals in a career spanning 22 years. His playing career also included a then national record £220,000 transfer from Everton to Arsenal at the end of 1971. After retiring as a player, he had a 15-year career as a manager which included spells in the top flight of English football with Portsmouth, Southampton and Manchester City.

70 yr. old Evertonian here , lucky enough to see him play many times, he never stopped running the whole game, we called him 'Mr. perpetual motion', seen many great ones play for us but he is without doubt my favourite, met him at Cheltenham races one day and it echoes what you said, he was a lovely guy...RIP Alan and thankyou for putting this up.

    A wonderful tribute to Allan.
I saw him play for Southampton, but met him a few times. When pompey manager, and one of my biggest fondest memories was to have a dinner with the 1966 squad minus Moore and Bobby Chalton. But when I met him he always had time for me and answering my questions .
    R.I.P Allan, a true gentleman and a legend .

When Alan managed Stoke City (my team) myself and my friends used to go and watch the players train in the school holidays. We were usually always the only ones watching them and Alan never failed to chat to us and have a laugh and joke with us about which players we fancied 🤣. I must say he provided me with some wonderful memories in my early/mid teens and ones I shall cherish forever. Rip Alan 🙏🏻

Great tribute Paul well handled and put across, what you have to remember that Alan was only 21 years young and I believe he was man of the match. He was also one of the brilliant midfield players for Everton along with Colin Harvey and Howard Kendal. One last thing - why the entire World Cup winning Team 0f 66 were never knighted is beyond me, he was also the first player to wear "white boots "

Sir Alf Ramsey shared Scotland's mutual hatred of The Auld Enemy in the annual Scotland v England match and warned Alan to behave in front of 110,000 football-crazy Scots at the old Hampden Park. He said he would and Englans were winning with 2 minutes left 2/0, much to the displeasure of the local natives.
Bally got the ball by the corner flag and SAT on it. The crowd went mad, Ramsey was furious and berated Alan from the touchline. Missiles were thrown.
As the players came off, after heated exchanges, Ramsey went up to Bally and whispered in his ear "Well Done Son! "....

Born in Farnworth my home town, Alan was about 10 yrs older than me, I remember him driving down our street in a MG Midget sports car top down it was British Racing Green in colour there was me and two mates my mate stuck his fingers in his mouth let out a loud whistle and shouted Everrrrrton ! ( funny what you remember at 67) he used to play bowls on the bowling green on Bradford Street at Farnworth my mum took my brother and I and some other kids up to see him we ambushed him and we all got his autograph I can remember mum saying to him “ I bet you get fed up of this don’t you “ he was only a young fella then, he just smiled and patiently signed his autograph for us all. He was ( and probably still is ) a local legend. His cousin Sue lived round the corner from us she sadly passed last year. Alan senior used to drink on Market Street at Farnworth standing at the tap room bar of the Horseshoe pub bar really nice smartly dressed fella. All a long time ago ….thanks for the video and making me dig deep in my young memory banks. I now live in Portsmouth and bugger me his picture was on the wall in the Guildhall Portsmouth when I worked as a contractor at the council, I used to point at it and say he is from the same town as me…….RIP Alan you are fondly remembered if you can find his book it’s well worth a read.

@@IsleofskyeTommy Lawton told a similar story about Stan when they first played for England. " Always pass the ball to my feet Tommy, remember that, I won't be interested in anything else". So of course first time Tommy gets the ball he passes it ahead of Stan to run onto. Stan stood still with his hands on his hips and shouted" To my feet I said Tommy!" Tommy said" Sorry Stan I forgot". Stan replied" OK Tommy, just don't do it ever again!"😊

When Alan Ball was playing live football on tv was a rare event and highlights of a few matches were broadcast on Match of the Day and regional variants. A shame there's so little footage from that time. The late Martin Peters ended his playing career at Gorleston FC in Norfolk. I remember travelling from London with some college mates to watch our team Ipswich at home to Portsmouth in the 86/87 season. We lost.

    Hi Paul.
Never met Alan or any of the 1966 World Cup winners but remember them playing, particularly Alan Ball and Bobby Charlton. I follow a few football teams across a number of English Leagues because they have family association; Wealdstone in the National League because they were my local team growing up (they were actually based in Wealdstone then, not Ruislip as they are now), Brentford in the Premier League as my Father and Grandfather were both born in the London Borough of Brent and Portsmouth because my mother was born there and lived not far from Fratton Park before WW2. Mum lived in Portchester after the war until my parents married and mum moved to London. We had relatives in Portchester until I was in my early 20’s and still love visiting the area whenever I can. Keep ‘em coming!
    Kind regards,
    Mark

Hey Paul, a fantastic tribute to Alan. I remember him playing for The Saints towards to end of his career and managing teams with the trademark flat cap. RIP Alan ✝️

Hiya Paul, I never met Alan Ball but Alan was born in the same county as me, but about 80 miles apart, I watched the 1966 world cup final many times and I've credited Alan as Man Of The Match, Say Paul would you please keep the sporting vlogs up, I find them best of all, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England

Sadly I wasn't born until 66 and football wasn't that big in the US during my childhood. Wasn't until I was stationed in Germany that I fell in love with the game.

One of the greatest players to put on an Everton shirt. I cried when he left. Rip Alan. Thanks Paul, very nice content as usual.
