- This is the story of how England won the 1966 FIFA World Cup. How did England go from underachievers to finally winning the World Cup? Who were the stand-out performers at the 1966 FIFA World Cup? What were the notable stats from the 1966 FIFA World Cup?
This is the latest video of a series focusing on telling the story of each FIFA World Cup. TheSportsFiles channel is all about telling great sporting narratives. Been waiting for this one. Great video as usual, so much research and effort put into it!
Thanks much appreciated!
This channel is underrated af keep it up 👍
As a new channel, I truly appreciate comments like this. Thanks a lot!
This is why Engalnd won the World Cup:
Group stage: controversial goal against France to top the group.
Round 2: Referee sends off Argentina captain for nothing, tilts the game in favor of England. Even England reporter noted this.
Final: Ball hits crossbar and comes out- but goal given.
No controversial goal against France, Rattin sent off for constant arguing, good second goal.
England won fair ,most complete team there.
@SAlam-ly7ds - Ref didn't send Rattoff for nothing, in his own words it was "the look on his face", neither Kreitlein or Rattin spoke a common language so ref assumed he wasn't asking if he prefer Stones or Beatles.
@@who9387Persistent arguing.
Plus the travelling issues for the semifinal. Like in Euro 2020 (2021), when the two teams that had to travel the least reached the final. It's also a massive advantage to play all your games in one stadium.
Love this series
Thank you. As a new channel, I really appreciate comments like this.
England vs. Argentina sounds more like a battle than a football match.
Yeah, it ended up being the birth of their football rivalry.
Netherlands vs Argentina was more of a battle than a football match
Lol yep that's a good example too.
Siempre vs Inglaterra es una "batalla" futbolistica. Todavia recuerdo el partido del '86 y, el historico Gol del Diego el mas lindo para seguir y ganar la Copa...
Bobby Charlton and Moore were the two heroes of the World Cup for England.
Very true. Moore not only defended well but distributed the ball really well.
Charlton provided so many goals from midfield.
@GSB188 - Nah !, the REAL heroes were FIFA, Kreitlein and Bakhramov. That old FIFA home bias reared it's ugly head again.
You only covered England in this one. Would have been nice to hear about the other matches.
Yeah, I understand. The problem is that the videos will just become longer and longer as the number of matches increases over time.
I wonder how the rest of the game would have gone if they didn't allow the phantom goal in the final... I am a Germany national team fan in the US to be 100% transparent.. I truly believe that the powers that be couldn't allow Germany to win a world cup in England after what happened a little more than 20 years before that.
I can understand your feelings about that. For what it's worth, things evened out with the Lampard shot that crossed the line.
@@TheSportsFiles-mm1kg Did it though? One bad call cost a team a real opportunity at a world cup, in 2010 Spain ended up winning the world cup, if the horrible call against Lampard happened in 2014 then I would have shut my mouth... Can you tell I thought about this and have been ready for your reply? 🤣🤣🤣No big deal what's in the past is in the past, but wanted to voice a quick opinion🙂
The ball was just over the line and it was known back then, but you have to see the high definition movie film from ground level looking straight along the line and not from an angle, which does exist but has rarely been shown in documentaries.
You cannot make a decision based on the fuzzy black and white TV pictures that are always shown, as the image is just not clear enough.
The DRAWS for the finals are very largely fixed. In 1961 there were photographs of Sepp Herberger, inspecting the beds and the kitchens of a hotel in Chile. And guess which hotel the Germans stayed at for their first qualifying round matches in the Chile World Cup a year later?
In 1974 West Germany had an easy first round draw and played their decisive second round match on a pitch that was disadvantageous to their opponents, instead of postponing it. However, I don’t begrudge them their victory as they deserved to win the final on the day because they were the more positive team.
West Germany’s 2-2 goal looks offside
Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, Geof Hurst and Gordon Banks 👏🏻
English football legends and the main stars of the 1966 World Cup win.
@@TheSportsFiles-mm1kg And Martin Peters.
Technically ....they won the jules rimet cup. It was renamed the world cup in 1970 🤣
@dalenr8772 - That's a great pedantic point, must remember it.
@@who9387 Half correct - it was renamed the FIFA World Cup in 1974 after Brazil won it for the third time in 1970.
@@gunternetzer9621still same tournament tho
Fix
The referee was wearing an England's shirt in that match, likewise the playoffs referees in 2022 were wearing Argentina's shirts like in 1978.
England won by cheating the whole world cup hahaha.
Same as Argentina in 1978.
@@DTNenforcer true same as Italia 1934
Exactly @@DTNenforcer
Rigged cup
Every world cup is rigged 😆 don't be surprised sweetie. Look at Argentina 2 World cups un deserved
