    Very interesting, Sam. The swedish company Candella is in front with their advanced hydrofoil system. The key to their success (and orderlist) is their own software which controlls everything. And their amazing duoprop motors. But still bloody expensive!

    I'm a boat guy and am working on fuel cell powering my boat using a 100kw fuel cell and small lithium battery pack say 20kWH and approximately 100-300KWH hydrogen storage after 50% reduction for losses in fuel cell or 200-600 KWH before losses.Weight of fuel cell 250 lbs, tanks and pluming 100 lbs /200KWH(no loss) or 100lbs /100KWH (with losses).
    I have 400KW in fuel cells (4 units)@ 250 lbs /100kw output or 1000lbs which is probably just a little heavier then the li powered by boat you showed but 600 hp . If I used more units at lower power setting then the efficiency can get up to 65% instead of 45% for one unit maxed out.If I could get alkaline fuel cells then 65% loaded to 92% lite load efficiency. I've been working on this idea since the late 1970's Just got my diving insurance started for servicing boats so fuel cell powering in on the back burner for now.But still moving forward.

    Foil lifted boats are the future but let's be aware that their higher speed is not necessarily a plus. I recently watched kite surfers during high winds on Lake Constance (Swiss-German border) and the lone foil surfer was easily twice as fast than the regular ones. Now imagine a larger number all at his top speed mixed in with recreational boaters, kayakers, swimmers, and large tourist vessels.

    • @niolss
      @niolss ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The foiling electric boats are not faster than regular boats. They have way less powerful engines since they need less power because they are more efficient. So about the same or slower top speed compared to gas powered boats

    • @mv80401
      @mv80401 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@niolss You're right, and the other issue is that they don't create much wake (until they dip in close to harbor). That said, the kite surfer with foils was easily twice as fast than the other, I shot video.

    • @sjsomething4936
      @sjsomething4936 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the issue is with the speed of a kite foiled on a busy lake with many other types of recreationalists. The foil *boats* as another poster mentioned aren’t necessarily any faster than a traditional one. The only real way to deal with this potential problem is with sufficiently strong laws and people either obey them or enforcement actions take place. In Ontario I was given a warning as a teenager because my friend and I were windsurfing in and across a navigable waterway, essentially the path that motorized boats take through the lake. We simply moved to an area that permitted us to windsurf without any potential problems with boats passing through the marked channel.

      Definitely not for use in some waters of the world but lots of inland lakes that this wouldn’t be much of a concern in. Great Lakes as well have fairly few deadheads, but of course it’d only take one to make it a real crappy day. I’m guessing there’s some kind of simple replacement for a damaged one, maybe even a spot for carrying it on the boat. Better be for the prices they’re asking!

    I've been watching news about EV boats for some time. I'm not talking about the little trolling motors but electric motors that can power boats in the 20-30 foot range. I don't care about the millionaire cruising boats, I care abut boats I can go ocean fishing in. Hydrofoil boats are nice when you want to get someplace fast and have clean water to fly in. Fishing boats would only need hydrofoils to get to the fishing spot, then they moving around slowly when trolling. I live in an area where we often have to navigate around floating parts of trees, Orcas and whales. No way am I going to ride in a hydrofoil in my area. Hit one log and you're dead in the water. I'm hoping for large enough electric engines to power our many ferries. I'm tired of seeing oil slicks near the ferry landing and in marinas.

    Damn Sam, maybe the first time I couldn't follow your thinking. How far in the future are we talking here for electric boating, you don't say but you imply it's pretty close and I think not. Hydrofoil is not popular because it's extremely expensive and restricted on where it can be used. Boating is generally a relaxing sport not an outright racing experience for most boat owners. 90% of small boat owners get out on the water, have a great day fishing or just boating, pulling inflatables, skiing etc. and go home to drink some beer and eat pizza. They are not going to pay 4 times the purchase price to do the same thing in an electric boat with no exhilarating engine sounds. Tell me if I'm wrong, I'm listening.
