Great video. How long have you been using Linux? It's been since 1994 or 1995 for me.

How would you do it in command line?

It's PopOS, right? But can i do this in other distro?

Of course! On Gentoo this is done since several years. Here is the wiki about it: wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Linux_firmware And there are frequent updates as well:
      packages.gentoo.org/packages/sys-kernel/linux-firmware

Other distributions can do this. As long as they enable it, you'll have this capability.

I just installed firmware a week ago and was really surprised on how things have changed. It had me set up a password and it rebooted to a blue screen that scared the hell out of me, I freaked (memories of XP) but it rebooted and still the the Wifi didn't work. So I tried again and again and then I finally realized you have to enter the password on the blue screen to have it verified. Oh HP, why a blue screen? I hope I remember that password for an update 5 years from now.

I'm a beginner and you lost me already before you started. Where do I find the notifications? I have Linux Mint.

Same here. It looked like its a GNOME DE. But Pop OS's devs might have modified it.
That's so easy and cool. Pop OS's idea of updating the firmware is really helpful to Linux users.

There are a limited number of hardware manufacturers and devices that support this firmware update feature in Linux. If you're not receiving the notifications, then your device may not be supported. There are some bash scripts you can try. Do a web search for the following term to find the commands: fwupd

Last year I recieved a UEFI dbx and I'm running PoP Os. In the description, mentioned it appears to be some kind of Microsoft security update. It also mentions possibly having to update shim and grub pkgs and says any DVD or USB previously installed with old signatures may not work correctly and that I may have to temp turn off sec boot when using rec or installation media if new images have not been mande avail to my distro.
I have tried to find out more about this as you instructed at the beginning of your video but I have found nothing and so I still don't know if I should go ahead with the update. I run an ASUS laptop from 2018. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a spare Lenovo 330s thats been trying to update its BIOS since last winter. I read horror stories online about devices being bricked , I am very apprehensive about installing 'this' update. My computer functions , or at least seems to be fine running Windows. Every computer in my house runs linux this laptop is like an infection in the ecosystem .
    My main concern :
It came with the Optane memory the first batch they released of the 16gb. I am also reading people have issues installing linux on Lenovo Laptops with Optane , have you had any experience with that ? I would love to get rid of Windows completely and install Debian , Lenovo ships the laptop with the drives in a RAID0 ( I didnt get the SSD version , the optane supplements the much larger HDD). If I was going to install Linux how would I want to configure the drives so that the Optane does its job ? Im sorry I know that was a few questions but I really don't know who else to ask. I have been stuck on Windows since Dec 28 of last year because I can't find an answer I am happy with. Aside from it all something about the Optane firmware originally had to be changed in order to install linux, which left a chance of bricking the Optane separately. Any thoughts would be appreciated , Thanks.

To keep it simple, my thought is this: look at the list of fixes in the firmware update release notes, and in the notes of every update since yours. Does it contain fixes for problems that annoy you? If so, consider it. If the list of fixes don't excite you, then just keep your laptop as-is.

@@LearnLinuxTV Hey , no it has nothing to do with my actual feelings lol . I shouldn't have used the words 'happy with'. No one was 100% certain at the time & your right I should catch up on release notes. The bottom line is I am afraid to do it , I would feel a lot better installing the bios update using Linux. As far as installing Linux on the early version of Optane , again the fear of bricking it is whats stopping me. Maybe there have been improvements and the process has become more definitive. I asked you , because I trust you. As far as the BIOS updates , it doesn't seem to be anything detrimental. So with 'excite' standing for worth the risk I am going to stay put. Getting Debian on this laptop is a must for me though. So I will follow up on that and put the BIOS on hold. Thanks though , now I am thinking straight.

Thank you for the video. I hope to someday understand Linux and especially LInux on laptops as well as you. Unfortunately, I just bought my first Chromebook today, although I eventually plan to give it to my teenager for school and homework.

    What about fwupdmgr in terminal?

I may consider that, but since there's a GUI app for it, I don't know if the average user will care.

@@LearnLinuxTV Well I am not the average user but I care. Giving users options and teaching them not to be afraid of the terminal is a positive thing.

That's incorrect, this service is available in other distributions too. The underlying architecture that powers this is not distro specific, and GNOME Software already supports it.
