  • Bojack Horseman, the character, is unlucky in love. But Bojack Horseman, the show, argues that it has little to do with luck- it’s all Bojack’s fault.
    Bojack Horseman Season 4 is available to stream on Netflix beginning September 8th.

    BoJack Horseman is one of the most fascinating characters in all of fiction. He's pretty much an objectively shitty person, yet we're compelled to root for him because we see something of ourselves in BoJack. We've all done selfish things, things that we kind of hate ourselves for and we're not sure how to live with those things. We want to see someone like BoJack be happy and perhaps even redeemed, because it would give the rest of us hope.

      well my moment where i knew that despite him beeing an ass he is someone to "root for" was 'Bojack hates the army' where his opinion on the subject are soo resonable and ther was one moment where almost all of the main characteres where involved, wher i just thought "wow bojack is by far the most Intelligent Person in the room"

    The tragedy of Bojack Horseman isn't that he can't love himself, it's that he thinks love is conditional. This is probably why his so obsessed with fame, because he thinks fame will make him worthy of love. But that's not how it works, if Bojack wants unconditional love then he should unconditionally love himself and the people around him, it may not get him what he wants but it would make a better person... or a better horse.

      Rick and Morty plays around with the idea but it's not this deep show that everyone makes out for it to be. It's good and refreshing but ultimately doesn't have anything that important to say since it dabbles with theories and shit. Bojack Horseman is relatable and is actually based in some sense of reality so that we can all relate to the characters.

      Rick And Morty uses those concepts in a kind of shallow way and it will never truly be the main focus of the show. Bojack Horseman uses those concepts as a focus to center the plot around

    • @ttaaddoo111
      @ttaaddoo111 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I would not say that BoJack is nihilistic, or at least entirely, for that would require of him not to be able to find meaning in anything. While he has been able to find meaning in some things, as his relation to Todd, only to screw them up - and let's see what may happen to Hollyhock -, the very fact that he has been searching for purpose and questionably grasped it, as I have seen it, tells me that he is no nihilist, but a deeply scarred person possibly incapable of commiting and giving himself to that which he finds meaningful for reasons too elaborate for me to elaborate upon here and now.

    My life is like Bojack Horseman, as far as wanting change, being aware of my flaws. Yet, something inside is stopping me from making the actual effort to make things better. I only care about music, making music, or creative writing. I'm the same way, repeating the same things everyday expecting different results, expecting things to get better. That's why I love this show.

    • @thalion77771
      @thalion77771 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      DUDE, that totally speaks to me. Whenever I find myself having to get work done to make my life better, I always end up stressing out and then just make music or watch youtube videos. Lately things have gotten bad as I ended up turning to amphetamines and then I make music. I'm thinking this may help a lot, but I'm going to be leaving in about 2 weeks to go to a christian rehab residency program. It's 1 year long. You can't leave, no phones, no books (besides the Bible), and you are only allowed 5 Cd's (christian only). Wish me luck! I hope to change my life and get some self motivation/drive, and not hate myself so much.
      Instead of being like bojack and destroying other peoples lives, I ended up living a life of seclusion, deciding to not commit to anything, or only commit to social commitments short term, and not have any social or personal attachments except to my immediate family, I visit about once every week to 2 weeks.

      Jack Jillz--
      Hello stranger,
      I don't know anything about you really, but I know so many of us are in the same loop you are. Most of us commenting know what the experience is. I know some of it myself, too.
      What I really want to ask you is if you'd be open to talking/sharing about your story? I really want to know that I'm not the only one out here, that we're all going through this, but maybe we don't have to go through it alone. If you're open to the question, maybe reach out outside of TH-cam, like G+, or email better? Honestly, I'm just a lonely, curious human on the face of this planet, with same sly over my own head as you, wondering how to connect instead of flail around hopelessly.
      Maybe you won't see this-- you wrote this months ago. If you do, write me an answer. Until then, may the tenacity of being alive and whole be with you.
      - h

    This is such a brilliant show because the characters, especially Bojack, are so deeply relatable. We all have self-destructive tendencies that lower our self-esteems and soil our interpersonal relationships. Many of us, like Princess Carolyn, use our work as a distraction from how lonely we are. Like Todd, some of us feel like we don't have any useful skills and that we are a burden to others. 100% an amazing show, so happy to have found it.

    One of the reasons why i like Bojack Horseman is because it's down to earth, relatable, and not silly and twisted. Bojack and his friends are not at war with some evil monsters or aliens. The characters don't do cruel things to each other for the sake of comedy. One character doesn't claim to love another and yet is happy when something bad happens to the character they profess to care about. Bojack doesn't have to deal with some evil supervillain. It's a mature show that knows when to tell a joke and when not to. Also, the characters are portrayed to be human.

    Thanks to this show and some traumatizing experiences, I was depressed for around eight months. Throughout that time, I felt as if I related to Bojack, but couldn't give a specific reason of why. This video helps give insight on the qualities I used to, and ultimately do still see in myself. Especially the point about his cyncism reaching the point of a self-destructive loop, and being the root of his suicidal and depressive tendencies. Thank you for the video.. excellent breakdown and analysis, and is personally helpful to me.

    What hurts is that, even if Bojack changed, some people in his past(specifically the people he hurt) will always see narcissist Bojack and never the new "good person" Bojack. And maybe even if they saw new Bojack, all they'll be able to see, in the minds/heart, is the guy who hurt them.

    the fact that i relate to bojack so often is one of the many reasons i love the show, but also really depressing. i’ll laugh at him or feel deeply bc of something he says or does because it reminds me of myself, but then i have to wonder, do other people see me like that too? i mean, i’m not an alcoholic or reliving my “glory days”, but we still have pretty much the same tendencies. this show has changed a lot about my outlook on life and the way i treat myself, especially the “stupid piece of shit” episode. i couldn’t stop laughing both bc it was so relatable and because it was all absurd. made me realize that if i so strongly relate while also empathize and think he doesn’t deserve to feel this way, why am i doing it to myself? i kind of fetishize my own happiness too, and this show has made me realize that. not to mention the fact that nothing will ever make me go against suicide as much as the view from halfway down.

    Spoilers for Season 4. Bojack showed considerable growth in season 4. He helped Holly Hawk find her mother, and had her fathers tell her. In the end he showed kindness towards his mother, even though the relationship was never anything but toxic. We also saw Mister Peanutbutter's dark side and could see that his optimism and outgoing personality were used as a mask to hide his true feelings. Mister Peanutbutter can be awful even worse than Bojack. Mister Peanutbutter has never actually supported Diane in her endeavors He becomes hostile when she brings up the weirdness of his brother's behavior. Mister Peanutbutter was more than willing to see a state run into the ground if it meant that he could win a popularity contest. Todd told Bojack exactly what he needed to hear when he told him that he was responsible for everything wrong in his life. One of the core messages of the show is that there are often very good reasons for the disposition of miserable people, but that they are ultimately responsible for how they treat others.

    It disturbs me to say how much of Bojack's life and outlook I can see parallels in. But then again, either it's enjoyed by bad people, or these things are a common feature of the introspective man. I really, REALLY hope it's the 2nd one. Cus my apathy, and oftentimes disgust, for others that I hold dear to me sometimes concerns me. Like my sense of social conscience and belief in needing to be good to others is just an act I fool myself into believing. Like, when I interact with people, I can't remember if it's because I like being with them or if I want something out of them. I could happily become a hermit to stop bothering with people, if it weren't for all the people I would miss out on. Is my interest in other people's way of thinking or culture entirely surface deep - a more complex version of seeing ants in glass? Do I want people to be happy? Yes, why not. Do I want my friends to be happy? Why not. Can't hurt. Don't have anything else to work towards atm. Do I simply see their happiness as a tool to improve my own via their favour? I mean, I want to do good things, but simply because they're no harder and not much less self servicing than bad ones, and I recognise the existence of thought in others. I feel wonder at beautiful things, at the happiness of my family, but do I see these things as no more than interesting things to dissect and study their relationship to others? I hate stupid people, as I understand them, and I think everyone is fucking stupid fucking constantly, so do I hate all people? My sister isn't stupid. My parents aren't stupid. I don't think I hate them. My exes were stupid, but I don't hate them (but I do (but I don't)). I have friends that aren't stupid. But I have ones that I hold dear that I sometimes want to strangle. Truly beat.
    Bojack Horseman is a good show that reminded me that we have less time than we think we have, that I should ask my elders about their stories, to write those down, and that I hate everyone, even those I love. I need a hug.

    How do you feel about how BoJack's been this season compared to the other seasons? I feel like with his past experience, he's tried his damnedest to not repeat himself again when it came to his relationship with Hollyhock, because he saw a lot of himself in her and didn't want her to go down the same path he went down on. Sure things did get bumpy along the way, really, really bumpy mind you. But I think it was the first time I saw him doing all that boring hard work to be a better person, and ultimately, it paid off for him in the end.

    • @Ray03595
      @Ray03595 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I think the latest season is him finally starting to turn things around. I really thought Bojack was going to ruin Hollyhock's relationship with that guy she met on set, and even though Bojack did prove he wasn't a good guy, he did n't interfere or feel the need to prove to Hollyhock that he was right. He genuinely took good care of her and didn't do shitty things to people. I think we'll see him continue to struggle with doing the right thing, but I love how the season ended on a very hopeful note.

      @thetake  6 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Don't disagree, but too many laughs to be had in between the darkness to make it too 'depressing'. 2 cents.

      Ben Wasserman I love how it is dark & its honesty is brutally depressive yet it never feels angsty or melodramatic. I guess the bright colours, silly puns, talking cartoon animals & juxtaposition with comedy really helps with that.

    • @thetake
      @thetake  6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    • @KaneK1234
      @KaneK1234 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jay kj I genuinely do feel it's way too angsty. It's like the creator is trying to get over some deep depression in their own mind and is using this show as a scapegoat or even a crux to try his best to get over it. All the depressing stuff like nihilism, and love being a lie is super melodramatic and teenage angst.

    I don't see why so many people have to argue over whether Bojack Horseman is better than Rick and Morty or not. The shows set out to accomplish two different things in two different ways; Can't we just accept that both shows are good?

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    As for Wanda, I feel full on optimism that Diana had would be overbearing. A person without emotional flaws or some sort of insecurities can be insecure in itself for the more damaged person.. at least myself. Cause I dated a Wanda before, and it made me feel wrong and not myself since I know I can’t meet her constantly happy/optimistic standards, just as Bojack felt and went through.

    You should do a piece on Rick and Morty. Especially with how they approach relationships and the idea of love along with the psychological affects of their adventures, it's just as thought provoking as this show.

  • @emmamonomo1229

    I rewatched this video and now I think why bojacks relationship with Diane speaks to me so much. I knew that Mr. Peanutbutter was a better partner for Diane, but I just truly wanted Bojack and her to be together. Now I realize I was just projecting my own desires on to their relationship. I fell in love with my best friend's best friend. He and I were so similar and we almost started seeing each other. But my friend realized she had liked him for years and wanted to be with him. And I let her. She didn't know I liked him though. I know she's better for him, so I decided to give him up. She's a Mr. Peanutbutter type: optimistic and lovable. But now I can relate to Bojack and feel the pain he feels.

And im aware that I can't love myself. I want to love others but I never believe they will love me. I feel like im in the cul de sac.
