Princess Carolyn is downright my favorite character from the whole show. She's optimistic and helpful, but unlike Mr. Peanutbutter she has an "off switch". She hurts like a normal person. Not everything bounces off her. But her baggage never renders her an unproductive wreck like Bojack or Diane when they crash. In fact, she juggles her personal problems while still coming through for her clients. She always felt like the most real of the characters to me: not a complete train wreck, but still a work in progress. I wanted to see her succeed so bad, and I'm glad she did.

Something that tells you a lot about PC's evolution is how she didn't told/invited Bojack or Diane to her first wedding with Judah. She told Bojack that the first one was the private one and the second is only for make work connections for theirs clients.
At the end she decided to cut ties with people that were emotional drains to her and even when she appreciated all the good moments, she is now balancing her professional life with her new family by setting limits.

PC is the ultimate feminist icon for me.
Yes she’s a workaholic and often sacrifices her love life. Even by choice sometimes. But the show doesn’t begrudge her that choice either. And yet it is uncompromising as Bojack Horseman often is. Her baby doesn’t solve her longing straight away. The responsibility wears her down to a nub. But she pushes through and finds that it’s all worth it in the end. She’s ambitious, career driven and optimistic . Her life is often tumultuous but she literally follows her dreams, as sappy as that sounds. Warts be damned. And that is admirable.

@@Scanny524 Ah, I see what you mean. When I hear "role model" I think more of an ideal to aspire to.
I'd consider her more of an "inspiring example", in the sense that she isn't an ideal role to be imitated as a whole.
But you have a good point. Since she overcomes her flaws eventually, that does make her an even better role model, since she shows how to overcome those obstacles that we struggle with. (Rather than never having struggled with them.)
But that distinction between "role model" and "example" are some hair-splitting semantics that aren't too well established, and I might even just wrongly picked up on.

This isn't true, I get the sentiment you're going for but we need to stop trying to divorce identities from characters. Princess Carolyn could not be rewritten as a male character due to several elements of her character arc being inexorably tied to being a woman. Being a female is an inherent, necessary part of her character and that indeed makes her a strong woman character.

Carolyn is one of my favorite characters. She's one of the most grounded in the entire show. She does play off the mean-spirited executive style person, but she also has a soft side as well. She wants to suceed but shit just keeps coming her way. She's definitely a role-model for hard working people and I think of her all the time when I do things.

  • @Azulagirlboss

Princess Carolyn is the reason I watch the show. I am so driven to achieve my goals. I want domesticity too. PC does not view becoming a mother as a huge burden on her shoulders. When Dianne gets an abortion while PC is trying to get pregnant, she doesn’t make Dianne feel like a terrible person for making that choice. She in fact offers her words of comfort, “you don’t have to explain anything to anyone”. She breaks the stereotype of “working woman” and embraces her motherhood & workaholism by managing not to fall into a mother’s guilt & also not compromise on her dreams. Initially, she feels that her routine with Ruthie is weighing on her, but once she forms a bond with Ruthie, things start getting easier. She puts up with a lot of sexism & thankless clients, but nothing makes her despise her job. She once questions why she took this job up. Success doesn’t come to her overnight. She worked at length for 23 years to get there. In the first episode, from her interaction with BoJack, I thought, “Oh, what a cold & rude person she is”. I eventually understood that that kind of shrewdness is a demand of her job. I love her & I never thought that an animated pink feline character would become one of my idols. 🧚🏻‍♀️

BJHM makes a good point about how that whole thing about 'opposite attracts' might be truth in a superficial level but in the long run it's unsustainable (BoJack e PC, Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter, BoJack and Diane in a platonic view... other couples I'm not remembering right now). Attraction/liking someone alone isn't enough to hold a wholesome relationship, after all. You have to be able to live and support each other and that can't happen if you have different views on core life structures or if your personalities are just crashing against each other all the time to the point you can't agree on anything and one side has to compromise a lot.
Judah and PC was not a couple I predicted or even thought of but the moment they appeared, I was so damn surprised and pleased. Because they work, you know they do because you already saw them around each other, they have the same mentality and know each other. They fit. And I was so happy to see them in the end.
