People always point to the fact that Saban didn't get Drew Brees, but the issues started before that when the Dolphins drafted Ronnie Brown over Aaron Rodgers.
They'd all deny it, but I think a lot of NFL peoples believed in the "Jeff Tedford Curse" back then. Teams were looking at Aaron Rodgers and seeing Kyle Boller instead. Maybe i'm giving the Nicktator too much credit, but if he was confused by NFL scouting and the college draft, maybe it actually is a crapshoot!
As a Dolphins fan, I can't argue against Miami not signing Brees. I think people forget just how bad his shoulder injury was and what a huge question mark he was. Also, he was far from the HOF QB he was in New Orleans. And would he have had the same type of effectiveness that he had under Payton? I doubt it. Brees just recently admitted his shoulder was never the same and he didn't have the strength he had before the injury.
I've always wondered what the Dolphins would've done with Saban exhibiting more patience and adaptation to the NFL's restrictions on his autocratic process. Would've been a much more interesting AFC East for sure.
The stuck him with culpepper as qb he wanted brees but they said no gm took culpepper, who sucked brees went to new Orleans had great career. Saban knew he had no control.over roster and said bye.
Pro Sports are designed to hamper strong teams and boost weak teams, via the salary cap and the draft. The leagues want randomness, which makes good TV.
Gm stuck him with bad qb and in nfl qb is team.period end of story. Saban wanted drew brees they said no gave him dante culpepper. Look at best nfl teams all have great qb. In college nick is not limited by gm.or draft he can and does get many great players as only limit is who he can recruit. Nfl is lesd coach more qb, college is more coach less qb. Saban builds teams and wins titles, nfl is in another galaxy.
All these college football coaches are frauds compared to the pro coaches. When you can’t hand pick your team and bully kids it gets a lot more difficult to control, doesn’t it?
The thing is - Nick Saban has so much (well deserved) credibility that any program he chose to head would be a national title contender in short order. Because just having him as the head coach would mean 5 star recruits who would normally never consider that school would want to go there. He would have his pick of the best of the best to serve as assistant coaches. So while he couldn't turn say UMass into a national champion in one year, he could certainly do it in a few years (once the talent pool has built up).
you obviously don't do research before you psycho blather. MSU while Saban was there. 1) ranked in the top 10 just 2 times in 59 games. 2) never finished ranked 3) 0 bowl wins, he resigned before the last bowl 4) I forget.
@@mas5867 And at MSU he wasn't the well known, multiple natty winning coach that he is now. That's like saying, "Bill Belichick sucks because he never got the Browns past the divisional round."
@@psychorabbitt More blather. 1) if Saban is a great coach, he plants his flag and establishes something. WTF did he establish at MSU? LOL. Are you saying that the well needs to be primed before he arrives? 2) and based on his sorry performance at MSU, why would anybody buy into what he was shoveling when he arrived at LSU? 3) LOL. You care to take a guess at what his record was at LSU against 9 win teams? Meaning, why the F AL bought into him is amazing. This is where you point to how well he has done there. Shula was on the cusp of turning Bama around. 88% of the 8 TN and Aub teams were ranked. Saban has had a walkover facing just 38% ranked teams against TN and Aub.
Being an Indiana Hoosiers fan, I didn't realize that Saban replaced DiNardo, who became Indiana head coach, but was terrible in his three years in Bloomington from 2002-04 (8-27 overall, never won more than three games in a season, and was 1-7 all three years in the Big Ten). However, it does lead to one of the most random and curious sports statistics I've ever found - three of those eight wins were against top 25 programs - Wisconsin in 2002, and both Oregon and Minnesota in 2004 (and the Oregon win was away at Autzen)...the curious stat is that all three schools were ranked #23 in the country when the Hoosiers beat them.

one is on offense and one is on defense. the starting running back this season was #1 and the starting corner was #1, but it doesn't matter because they aren't ever on the field at the same time
honestly this topic isnt as obvious as one might think his tenure in the nfl is a great example to look at for his coaching abilities. he's probably the greatest scout ever, his eye for talent is like no other but to say he's the greatest coach? that's a bit more debatable
I know it’s not the point of the video but it’s nice to see somebody get it right. 95% of the narratives have Bree’s choosing the saints over the dolphins but that wasn’t until the dolphins failed him on the physical while passing culpeppers destroyed knee. Sure Bree’s may have chosen the saints over Miami but he was never given the chance.
One reason I don’t think Saban is the greatest coach ever. If he doesn’t have most of the top recruits, pay the players like he’s done in the past and everything going his way, he’s just an average coach. Hated the NFL because “they get one first round pick”? What a loser. That’s how it goes dumbass…
No but he was still growing as a coach and when he came aboard Michigan State was also on probation for a lot of violations that happened prior to his tenure. They hadn't had a winning season since 1990 and Saban was their defensive coordinator in 1987 when they won a Rose Bowl. He may not have won titles there but he also took over during a difficult time period and they got better under his tenure after several bad years and NCAA sanctions.
@@jamesmarshall6619 They had about the same record under Perles from 1992 to 1994 - 6-6, 5-6, 6-6. Then under Saban they went 6-5-1, 6-6, 7-5 6-6, and then finally in 99 they go 10-2. Then after he left they go 5-6, 7-5, 4-8. So if he really made MSU better, then why did he have the same record as the previous coach the first three years and then after 1 good year he leaves they go back to being trash. How did he really make the program better?
@@jca6682 because when you're under sanctions and they reduce scholarships it's not easy to maintain anything nor build anything yet they maintained and finally had a great final year despite a lack of commitment by the program at that time . The talent they had his last year was very good, he recruited well, they were in a much better place, it's not his fault they hired a terrible head coach in Bobby Williams. That's not a Saban problem, that's an MSU making a poor hire and wasting the talent that was on the team. Those teams had talent, they had multiple players get drafted in the following two years after Saban left from classes he recruited, Saban can't overcome the incompetence of another head coach. Which again speaks to his level of coaching, he took over a program hit by sanctions, they didn't crater, they saw an increase in talent, broke through, left the program in a better place with NFL talent on the roster (something like 9 or 10 guys got drafted in 2001 and 2002 from classes he recruited) during an era where the Big Ten was arguably the best conference at the time and the subsequent guy did a poor job.
If you look at the Saban run vs. Dabo at Clemson. You see that Saban kept evolving. Making changes. All the while never compromising his process. That is what makes him the greatest ever. His program was fighting for a National Championship his last year (it took overtime to beat him), Clemson is now irrelevant.
Kinda wished they had mentioned the "I'm not taking the Alabama job!" part of his move back to college where he lied, but I guess that's just a minor blip at this point.
The funny thing about college football is that being successful tends to lead to more success thanks to how recruiting works. All the top prospects will want to play for a team that gets attention and gives them the best chance at going pro, and when a team like Bama is pretty much a sure bet to make the CFP every year and attract national attention why would you go anywhere else? Sure there's a few players who will want to be The Man, or those who don't think they'll get playing time on a team like Bama but most will just want to go to the biggest and best team It's kinda unfair
However in the nfl, some teams have the luxury of keeping a tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers for 2 decades. But having a quarterback start for 3+ years is pretty rare in college
@@Miller2h41 Saban says in his documentary that he hated that in the NFL your success was so reliant on finding a QB and when he was overruled on Brees he decided he’d coach the last year of his contract and move on. Alabama opportunity just fell into his lap. Another big part of Sabans legacy in Miami is his impact on Jason Taylors career. His 3-4 defensive scheme led to record breaking seasons as edge rusher and catapulted him into one of the best DE’s of all time. Jason Taylor attributed his increase in production to Sabans switch to 3-4 and Bill Belichick of all people who called Taylor and explained the pros of a 3-4 and assured him this change benefited him more than anyone.
@@Miller2h41 100%. Belichicks last year with Browns were one of the favorites in 95 until owner announced 1/3 thru the season he was moving franchise out of Cleveland and most of the staff wouldn’t be retained. Yet people are under the impression Bill failed in Cleveland. Dolphins haven’t won a playoff game in quite awhile yet Saban “sucked” in Miami taking over a 4-12 team going 9-7 with Gus Ferotte then a broken down Culpepper and an owner insisting they take a safety in first round of draft and Hagan over Brandon Marshall. Until the owner stops meddling everyone will fail in Miami.
There's a few issues here. If you read the book by drew brees, he asked Saban if Saban believed in him as a starting quarterback, to where Saban responded that he deferred to the expertise of the team doctors. Brees said right then that he would be going to New Orleans. Saban was just as complicit in not taking Brees as the medical staff, so he couldnt use that as an excuse to leave. You also forgot to mention that the entire week leading up to Saban's hire in Alabama, he repeatedly told media "I'm not going to Alabama." The fins have a lot of problems, but this story, along with bad drafting and tyrannical leadership (that part is right in this video), put the team back years and it's suffered in mediocrity thanks to guys like Saban, Wannstedt, Jimmy Johnson, Huizenga, and now Ross.
When Nick Saban didn't get the quarterback he wanted in Drew Brees in Miami because of a failed physical and had to go with Daunte Culpepper in 2006 that to me set up what would happen. Even Saban admitted not signing Drew Brees is why he left.
I have little respect for successful college coaches compared to the pros. You can create a cult of personality, be the highest paid person in the state, threaten and overwork your unpaid players while being the gatekeeper to their future, and maintain a successful program by picking and choosing the best prospects every year.
Preach! It's the reason why many of the best college coaches are utter and embarrassing failures in the pros. It's a lot easier to win in college when you can exploit young adults and make tens of millions while the players make nothing
Being that winning coach brings in money for the state and gives the players the best chance to be on prime time TV. That already gives them exposure by the time they make it to the NFL and that gets the NFL more money. You sound like a white person complaining about a offensive joke. If the players are fine with it, then why can't you be fine with it.
"Student atholetes." Hoho, that is brilliant sihr. Now, when we sell their likeness for video games, how do we get around payin' for our slaves uh- "student atholetes" then?

Maybe i'm giving the Nicktator too much credit, but if he was confused by NFL scouting and the college draft, maybe it actually is a crapshoot!
As a Dolphins fan, I can't argue against Miami not signing Brees. I think people forget just how bad his shoulder injury was and what a huge question mark he was. Also, he was far from the HOF QB he was in New Orleans. And would he have had the same type of effectiveness that he had under Payton? I doubt it. Brees just recently admitted his shoulder was never the same and he didn't have the strength he had before the injury.
So do you think Saban uses that as a convenient excuse?
@@bordaz1 I do. I find it hard to believe Brees was the only one who could be successful. He realized he was in over his head and quit
Saban did not have a Quarterback, simple as that.
Saban failed like most college football coaches in the nfl.
Big ass ego
Happy New Years!! Thanks for the vids!!
A Prism video on George Karl will be great. A polarizing figure to media yet generally hated by players.
Prism is my new favorite series this is amazing
It's almost been 10 years. Not a fan of either team involved but can we get the Mile High Miracle rewinder?
Do a video on worst calls in college football
Dolphins and Volunteers fan here and I hate the day he became Alabama coach like no other
As a lifelong Dolphins fan, I have a much different opinion of Nick Saban.
All these college football coaches are frauds compared to the pro coaches. When you can’t hand pick your team and bully kids it gets a lot more difficult to control, doesn’t it?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Can't blame you.
Thank you! Been asking it
I would really like to see Ray Lewis get a Prism video
Control freak? You mean perfectionist
That Dolphins Doctor who failed Drew Brees medically should have a statue in Tuscaloosa! 👨⚕
Saban was very much to football what John Wooden was to basketball.
15 years later and Miami fans still mad 😂
The thing is - Nick Saban has so much (well deserved) credibility that any program he chose to head would be a national title contender in short order. Because just having him as the head coach would mean 5 star recruits who would normally never consider that school would want to go there. He would have his pick of the best of the best to serve as assistant coaches. So while he couldn't turn say UMass into a national champion in one year, he could certainly do it in a few years (once the talent pool has built up).
you obviously don't do research before you psycho blather.
MSU while Saban was there.
1) ranked in the top 10 just 2 times in 59 games.
2) never finished ranked
3) 0 bowl wins, he resigned before the last bowl
4) I forget.
I wouldn't hate him if he'd been honest about the situation in Miami. Instead, he kept lying to the media and fans about his intent to stay.
This and the fact he used grey shirting to get extra recruits
How was he suppose to handle it? Asking the question was unfair, any coach would've answered it the same way.
ever sense nick had kirby on with him he taught a lot for kirby and now kirby is one of the best coaches just like saban but saban will forever be the best
Great content and good take
11:31 there are 2 players who are both #47.
one is on offense and one is on defense. the starting running back this season was #1 and the starting corner was #1, but it doesn't matter because they aren't ever on the field at the same time

honestly this topic isnt as obvious as one might think
his tenure in the nfl is a great example to look at for his coaching abilities. he's probably the greatest scout ever, his eye for talent is like no other
but to say he's the greatest coach? that's a bit more debatable

saban went 7-9 or 7-8 and didnt finish the season and with that same roster the dolphins went 1-15 the next year.. real failure
11:33 Two players wearing number 47. Uh-oh, I bet you one of them is that bald-headed guy who likes to wear disguises 😂
This video hurts my feelings.
7:25 - it should be noted the SEC - especially Saban - would greyshirt players allowing them to get extra players per class.
I don't remember him racking up Big ten titles in MSU.. but we just leave that part out of the story

His program was fighting for a National Championship his last year (it took overtime to beat him), Clemson is now irrelevant.
a secret Godfrey upload, what a blessed day
Well done
Kinda wished they had mentioned the "I'm not taking the Alabama job!" part of his move back to college where he lied, but I guess that's just a minor blip at this point.

The funny thing about college football is that being successful tends to lead to more success thanks to how recruiting works. All the top prospects will want to play for a team that gets attention and gives them the best chance at going pro, and when a team like Bama is pretty much a sure bet to make the CFP every year and attract national attention why would you go anywhere else?
Sure there's a few players who will want to be The Man, or those who don't think they'll get playing time on a team like Bama but most will just want to go to the biggest and best team
It's kinda unfair
Why cfb sucks, it's just one big sham
@@episodesglow vastly more entertaining than the NFL
However in the nfl, some teams have the luxury of keeping a tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers for 2 decades. But having a quarterback start for 3+ years is pretty rare in college
What a career GOAT
great video
Aka couldn’t find a good qb and owner refused to sign Brees in free agency so he left
If he signed Brees then Saban would still be with the Dolphins to this day
Clearly Nick Saban liked what he saw in Drew Brees but a failed physical and settling with Daunte Culpepper later led to leaving Miami.
@@gandix5516 Not to mention Saban wasn't as bad as many view him because in 2005 he went 9 - 7.
I didn't know that Belichek and Saban shared a common ancestry (Croatia)....they must breed good coaches over there
New Mexico State is in a pretty location - under the Organ Mountains

When Nick Saban didn't get the quarterback he wanted in Drew Brees in Miami because of a failed physical and had to go with Daunte Culpepper in 2006 that to me set up what would happen. Even Saban admitted not signing Drew Brees is why he left.
Saban failed with the Dolphins because he didn't have a Quarterback
Nobody knew until they did
Do not believe that LSU provided any obstacle to what he wanted. Nick Saban at LSU for 20 years is what I want to see.
I don't know what all those other teams did to piss coach SABAN off ,but thank you very much
OK, interesting... :)
But what made Donovan McNabb finish his career Untitled?
Lmao love the New Mexico State name drop go aggies
I have little respect for successful college coaches compared to the pros. You can create a cult of personality, be the highest paid person in the state, threaten and overwork your unpaid players while being the gatekeeper to their future, and maintain a successful program by picking and choosing the best prospects every year.
Preach! It's the reason why many of the best college coaches are utter and embarrassing failures in the pros. It's a lot easier to win in college when you can exploit young adults and make tens of millions while the players make nothing
Facts
Being that winning coach brings in money for the state and gives the players the best chance to be on prime time TV. That already gives them exposure by the time they make it to the NFL and that gets the NFL more money. You sound like a white person complaining about a offensive joke. If the players are fine with it, then why can't you be fine with it.
So what about the success of coaches whose players can enter the transfer portal at any second and get NIL deals?
"Student atholetes." Hoho, that is brilliant sihr. Now, when we sell their likeness for video games, how do we get around payin' for our slaves uh- "student atholetes" then?
HUGE butterfly effect in NFL and College Football history with Brees signing with the Saints.
