    Tavy@ it was the genius of alex higgins that stopped snooker from being stopped on tv in the late 60s to early 1970s. Becouse it was so boring watching a 9 day final between reardon and spencer plus there was no money in it. Todays players didnt realise how much they owed alex higgins.

      I Remember Alex breaking off like this, so when I saw MW do it I knew where it came from. I was surprised the commentators didn’t mention that Alex used to do it sometimes, or did I miss that ? . He used to do it when playing against Steve Davis as Steve would often pot a long red if it escaped the pack.

  • @RogerJJSmith
    @RogerJJSmith 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It's a risky break-off given that you can leave a touching ball, which would result in your opponent having a free shot back to the baulk cushion. In fact Higgins got away with it here because Griffiths' second shot was so poor: hitting the brown full ball when he should have left the white on the baulk cushion.

      It offers no one the advantage amd promotes a stalemate leading to a rerack, it allows for reds to come into the baulk end, it promotes stalemate, its a containing safety shot when ypu can see a red full ball, its a strange choice of shot, although higgins was very unique thats probably the only reason he played it

    • @wanderer1955
      @wanderer1955 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mikeleigh506 Higgins was controversial, and a rebel. One minute he was potting balls by ricocheting them off the cameraman's head! Next minute he would break off the most boring break off imaginable. He was never predictable. Steve Davis said Higgins had the sharpest "snooker brain" he had ever played against. If not for Higgins we don't know how snooker would have progressed down the year's. No Hurricane, no Whirlwind. No Whirlwind, no Rocket. I'm looking forward to who's coming next.

    If these super-safe breaks are to be outlawed, it would be easy to do with a rule requiring the breaking player to hit a red directly (before hitting a cushion).

      In pool (depending on the local rules) either a ball has to pass the middle pocket or touch a cushion.
      Could easily make the break in snooker so that at least 1 red must move at least one ball's diameter.
      The point of the break is to BREAK the rack.

      @@Buz-Lunch-Punx I agree there’s no need to outlaw such breaks, but during the recent World Championship one of the commentators (possibly Ken Doherty) said some of the professional players were grumbling that it should be banned because it slows the game and bores the audience. I have to agree. Mark Williams is currently doing the same style of break off in this year's World Championship. But it seems a pointless break off and a waste if time because they only end up doing minute's later what they could have done from the opening break off itself.

    • @kshgarg147
      @kshgarg147 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, this is not pointless. When you break normally you have a high chance of selling a long red with a path back to baulk (shot to nothing). When you play it this way, its your opponent who ends up giving you that chance.
