Thanks for another great video. I ALWAYS learn from these. My take away is that I did not know it was the bullet length that determined the twist - everything I have read suggests that it is the grain weight that determines twist.

    Another great video.
Thank you for your time in making this video. Very informative on barrel twist.
I've had Mark Brown build me a few rifles, he was telling me, the same thing regarding twist. I think, both you guys are right on the money.
    Blessings your way.

Faster twist can give you some good expansion with bullets over the slower twist especially with copper bullets. Only downside is they slow down the bullet because it stays in the barrel longer. 8.5” is probably best all around for 7mm everything.

I've gotten a lot of push back from people because my 1in10 twist 270 Winchester can shoot the 165 gr Nosler ABLR. I am at higher elevation which I believe helps. I am getting pretty good accuracy with these (to my standards). Thanks for the video

I Really Wanna See How This Build Ends I’m In California too, On My 300prc with 1-9 it won’t stabilize, 205g badlands bullets, but the 195g that calls for 1-9 twist minimum they shoot 1/2 inch, the 205g bullets calls for 1-8, I think for monolithic bullets you really need to have the right twist for what the manufacturer is calling for

My understanding is that there are some specifics about the chamber design, tighter tolerances, maybe tighter freebore or neck area, that help to make factory rifles more accurate. Things that custom reamers/rifles have been doing for some time but helping the over the counter customer a chance to get closer.

Dear Sir - Berger website has a twist calculator..........thanks.

  • @rickyspeakman4445

Speed is the answer to all the twist rate issues. The 224 Valkyrie was one. They wanted a faster twist rate when the original was fine. I got rid of my short barrel and got the longest barrel I could and got them to shoot as fast as I could to stabilize the bullet.i shot a 3” group at 750 yards with it. The reason for the Remington sendero in 7 mag shoot real good is the 9.25 twist barrel. When it come to twist rate it all depends on elevation and speed. Berger is an optimal twist rate program, so a person can use that to decide if a twist rate is good or bad. I have a friend that shot a 7mm rem mag 9 twist rate and 180 elem. it shoot them at close to 3100 fps and almost hole for hole at a hundred yards. In this case a 9 or 8.5 would be fine depending on speed and elevation. Another factor is availability of barrels with certain twist rates. I have not seen a 8 twist in a 7mm barrel in a long time.

Mono metal bullets need the extra twist, especially those cutting edge, the bearing surface of the 168’s are LONG, I opted for a 1-8 twist on my 7 prc, hoping to shoot factory ammo. Beware of the factory loads, some have reported plus or minus 3 grains and blown primers. I only got 3 firings out of my Hornady brass (shot and loaded before ADG or Peterson released theirs).

  • @derekmcmurry

I've been told that the faster the twist, the more velocity loss generally speaking. I'm guessing your customer is steadfast on the 8T because that is the twist Hornady and SAAMI spec concluded was ideal for 7PRC. I now have two 7PRCs, both with 8t barrels and found immediate accuracy with Hornady factory 180 ELD-M, 175 ELD-X, Federal 175 ELD-X and 180 BVLD hunting handloads. I settled on LRT powder in one of them that has the Brux barrel with the 180 hunting BVLD shooting one hole 3 shot groups on 5 different days and Retumbo, same bullet, in the other 7PRC with a Hart barrel on it, same outcome. Back when I first started loading Bergers I found a one hole load with Retumbo, Fed215M primers, once fired WW brass, 168 BVLDs in my 7RemMag with a Krieger barrel, 9 twist. It would not stabilize the 180s at all to the point I felt I had exhausted 4 powders, multiple loads and seating depths so I threw in the towel on that and stuck with the 168s which I'm more than satisfied with
All of my 7mm barrels on order are 8 twist for 7PRCs and 9 twist for 280Rem and AI. All are 4 groove. With the 7PRC being so new, and my limited but excellent experiences, I'm stubborn and will stick with what has worked for me but I may be tempted to try a 9T for a 7PRC. Time will tell

7mm prc or 28nosler its a very quick decision! 7mm prc all day no offense but 28 nosler is horrible at efficiency! Now i say almost you can get real close to the velocity of the 28 with the prc but with 10gr less of powder!!!! We all know the benefits of that! To each and there own! Good day!
