I'm sorry. To me this game isn't a masterpiece at all... The foundations are there for an excellent game. The features are however lacking... Way too much... - 40EUR - Few maps - All maps are the same- Very static gameplay (by this I mean as you pick a division, the gameplay won't change a lot) - Only two MP gamemodes, both annoying. Conquest and Domination. Conquest ending too quickly and generally in favor of the Allies. Domination being an arty campfest. - no free Faction selection. - Divisions system looked good but more limiting than anything. I want BOTH the Tiger and Long Range arty. - incoherent balancing. - and the worse: NO MAP EDITOR. Meaning you are stuck with the maps provided... Sudden Strike Forever, IMHO, was simply better in all aspects: funnier, very good MP setup, grandscale strategy and micromanagement perfect balancing, very good modding and map making capacity etc.... I think the small playbase some month after release is a good proof of this... It saddens me because as I discovered it I had the impression it could succeed in being one of my time high favorite RTS games... It's just to me way too much repetitive where I find both Quantity AND Quality are lacking and this for a high price tag.
When I started I really loved the game. As time went, I found the game utterly repetitive and totally lacking content (mainly no map editor and lack of MP gamemodes). It took me a bit more than 20 hours to realize it. - Conquest is stupid because as you hold 50.1% on the map you accumulate points as quickly as if you hold 99% of the map. Utterly ridiculous. - Destruction is more interesting, however it takes ages to launch a game (small player base + everybody wants to play Germany) and when launched, as I mention, its generally an arti-fest. If they decide to implement other games modes, I.e. like in Sudden Strike, x zones on the map, as it is occupied by a team it accumulates points. The more zones you hold, the faster you accumulate points. That would allow to have a better strategy (rather than holding 50.1% of the map), more diversity, and possibility to reverse situation with good strategy. Small Playerbase and mainly positive reviews (74%) are rather backing my statement. But hey! Everyone has its own tastes! Everybody loves The Witcher, I don't. There are a lot people that don't like IL-2 Battle of x series, I love it. There are a lot people that don't like MechWarrior Online, I love it. I'm happy for you that you like it.
+TLSPanthers To better compare games. A game that just scrapes an 8 and a game that could almost be a 9 deserve different ratings. A 1-100 system works better for that though.
Yeah, I think it's silly, pointless, and causes a lot of frustration. I wish they'd just use the 20 point scoring system. It's simple and plenty effective.
i like that you can create decks as big or small as you like and then have skirmish mode battles with limited numbers of units. Great way to learn the mechanics of the game. Plus you can slow time down in game to slow, very slow and even bullet time to aid your decision making.
This is nothing like close combat game, this is super overwheming game to play and this is some that played all war games of this type since the early 2000s
Oh, Close Combat deserves multiple new engines for every upcoming installation of historical encounters of certain scale. Specifically: Sand War Mubarak First Decade West Turkey Civil War 1950s Turks Clash Reza 1960s Reza Clash Pakistan 1960s Reza Clash Balochiland 1970s Fall of Zulfikar 1970s Sindh Imamate 1980s Punjab Imamate 1980s Bengal Imamates 1980s Bengal Imamates 1970s
Sausymayo Fly with a airplane IRL and quite high hills look almost flat and 2D because of your hight above the ground. But incredibly sharp and detailed IRL. In Normandy there is no mount Everest.
Disappointed it the game for a Normandy based title not sea invasion or beach operation missions. Hated the lazy american voice overs for British army . Great game though i loved playing it and it looks fantastic.
Rowan's a PC gamer who guests on 3 Moves Ahead: a dedicated strategy game podcast. So uh, yeah in this case IGN has someone perfectly valid on the review so cut the snobby shit out.
Alexander Williams I agree in large part but it's simply because most havent been exposed to them. I just found paradox games a little of a year ago and have put in hundreds of hours since. I was shocked how in depth they were. I was like wow this game is perfect. (ck2 eu4 vic2 hoi4) What other games in the same vain do you suggest?
I wish they could find a way to properly port these type of games to consoles, I would love to see EA bring back Command & Conquer but do it in the Star Wars universe.
Thing is, whilst I've written down all the hotkeys for Wargame: Airland Battle [which I still play as it's awesome]; they're simply not needed. Maybe for something quicker and more "clicks per minute", like Men of War..but even then there are, what;..16 buttons on console, which becomes 32-if you hold down just one other, 64 if you add just a second? The main problem, is that moving round the cursor/map/unit selection lasso with a controller is just too-damn-slow. So any old mouse would solve that. It's fustrating, as many of us would much rather play on a t.v and something like the PS4/X1 has more than enough power to run this looking great. Simply put, Normandy '44 videos look cool [if small] on my laptop, but mesmerizing and totally-immersive on my t.v. My solution, is to get a new laptop in a couple of months and hook it up to the t.v. But honestly..gaming laptops are a bit of a misnomer; I'd rather just be able to play it on my PS4 and I'll be hanged if I'll ever own a laptop, console, smart ph AND desktop...that's a whole 'lotta landfill from just one person.
"Overwhelming amount of detail." Yeah, I know right. That's what makes fallout 4 so much better then New Vegas or fallout 3. Also, Everyone loves world of warcraft now. They all say, Remember that horribly overwhelming talent tree and 40 man raids? IGN Streamlining game play to extend more to the toddler ages is not what gamers want. Omg a game is OVER DETAILED. Completely un-academic. Learning curves ARE what games are SUPPOSE to be about. Just end all your reviews with. "Should be more Mario Kart-lined" So everyone can more clearly see where you guys stand. "Yes, This WW2 simulator is good. But, We think adding in some Mario-kart could really take back some of its detail, And what the hell is a tank? No historical context! OMG! A Anti-tank weapon? WHERE"S THE CONTEXT?!?!?!?!? Finally, Where are the micro transaction for tank skins, That woulda gave it an easy 100 on our review! MICRO TRANSACTIONS!"
Play the original Company of Heroes, that's a game that will be better than this piece of garbage this will hope to be. With Europe at War mod it's even better. Bought this game, found it was crap, then refunded it.
Huh? I bought CoH, and stopped playing; as soon as I had to shoot tanks two or three times from BEHIND to kill them. As far as armour's concerned, it's just arcade rubbish where tanks have a health bar. This, like Wargame and Men of War [and War Thunder]; has proper armour penetration and angling taken into account as well as a simulation of the internals of the tank, i.e: ricochets can hit ammo, fuel, the oil system and individual crew-members. Maybe you just need to get better at RTS games before you slag them off???
I seriously recommend downloading the Blitzkrieg Mod for Company of Heroes. It adds realism that closely resembles Men of War and it redefines both Singleplayer and Multiplayer strategy. No more infantry rushing an MG42 without being severely dismembered, or Tiger tanks having to hit Sherman's more than twice - Just. Pure. Carnage!
I'm not saying it's a bad game-I was having a lot of fun with it; but I stopped playing and just couldn't go back to it, after I had to shoot tanks multiple times from behind. I then discovered Men of War and Wargame, and I basically haven't looked back since, which is why this game and Soldiers: Arena, will basically scratch every RTS wish. Though with that said, just to contradict myself [why not], I do always keep my ears open, hoping for an old fashioned medieval base-building game that can rival Age of Empires 2 [didn't like no#3, as I don't like having to defend trade points]. Sometimes, a man just wants an RTS where he can farm vegetables, and protect them from vegetable thieves, whilst growing more vegetables. In other news, I'll definitely have a look at the Blitzkreig mod, as it might solve the game-breaking issue I had with it.
The only thing that stresses me out more than RTS gaming is timed missions in games.
10/10 masterpiece. Now go watch another video

Wow, this is a better review than expected.
I hope they add the Eastern Front, Africa, and the Pacific in the future.
Normandy '44, yeah there was both africa and eastern front in there
Well you got your wish, Steel Division II is set on the eastern front in 1944
Yeah steel divisions 2 set on eastern front you get that
RUSE anyone? Back when Ubishit cared
This is kind of the sequel to RUSE as Ruse, Wargame, and this are made by Eugen Systems.
Yeah exactly. Thats how i view the game to. This one definitily belongs on my wishlist.
Same devs actually
World in Conflict!
Bucketnate1 the same game engine as well, Iriszoom
Feels like a 5 year old having to start learning how to play football by playing in the England team during World Cup.
It's Wargame Air land Battle and Red Dragon in a WWII setting. If you have the 1st two, you'll know how to play SDN44
Wait a second, destruction takes map control into consideration. Not a lot but it does.
"overwhelming amount of detail"...yeah, you're new to Wargame. That "overwhelming" amount of detail is what we love about Wargame.
RUSE
CRAZY6256 I love that game
This is kind of the sequel as Ruse, Wargame, and this are made by Eugen Systems.
FR the best
Why does IGN still have the .1 increment review system?
+TLSPanthers
To better compare games. A game that just scrapes an 8 and a game that could almost be a 9 deserve different ratings. A 1-100 system works better for that though.
Ghost_ Chronicle The best system, if you feel like a score is necessary, is going by halves, such as 8, 8.5, and 9.
Yeah, I think it's silly, pointless, and causes a lot of frustration. I wish they'd just use the 20 point scoring system. It's simple and plenty effective.
9.1/10

Shadow Slapper88 thank you good sir
Does anyone know how to be patient anymore?
Thank you, kindly!

They need to add elevations to the maps like small hills. All flatland is boring.
Sausymayo It has a map with hills
Sausymayo Fly with a airplane IRL and quite high hills look almost flat and 2D because of your hight above the ground. But incredibly sharp and detailed IRL. In Normandy there is no mount Everest.
The maps accurately portray the normandy landscape which is very flat
will purchase
Ruse and Wargame baby = Steel division
Too much detail is apparently a weakness nowadays :(
Why don't IGN videos have captions? It will be too great for foreign people like me.
looks like a ww2 era "War Games - Red Dragon"
is this on or will be on console
PC only
Sudden Strike 4 is coming out on PS4 in August. Alas, you need a PC for this.
Disappointed it the game for a Normandy based title not sea invasion or beach operation missions. Hated the lazy american voice overs for British army . Great game though i loved playing it and it looks fantastic.
cant beat MOW
Console gamers can't comprehend strategy ign should review other things
Alexander Williams
Be a multi platform gamer amazing pc and ps4 for its exclusives and even more you can enjoy most pc games with a controller
Yeah, it's not like consoles have gotten games such as Valkyria Chronicles, Phantom Brave, and Disgaea. >_>
Mayo Rice thanks for proving my point

Is this game easy to learn?
Great review :))
Does it have single player
yes
devs should avoid putting division in their game titles
Only played the first level, after that it was wayy to hard
looks great
I wish they could find a way to properly port these type of games to consoles, I would love to see EA bring back Command & Conquer but do it in the Star Wars universe.
I'd like to see the ability to use any regular mouse on console. With mouse support; this game-like Wargame; would be entirely playable.
This game is literally a new war game game with a WWII skin and a few new map features.
FazzCraftWM it isn't a new wargame
+simiejump you're right it's a dumbed down wargame
awesome game! RUSE meets Wargame
this review is accurate
meh. I prefer games like Company of Heroes
Much better than red alert and world in conflict.
Eugen system is the best!!!
looks cool
Would rather have RUSE 2
Integrated 525m 1gb, will my laptop set my house on fire?
SADat4AM yes
Is it just pc ?
trekranger yup, and I don't believe there's any plans to port it to consoles
I love RUSE
8.7 why? its not even that bad
8.7 is a good score...
It deserves more.
i want it
it's pretty expensive for what it is
I agree there
40USD for a brand new high-quality strategy game is expensive?
Yes it is
How? it's $20 less than worse games like CoH2, and doesn't have a shit loot system so you have all content from the start.
COH2 is not that bad of a game. The loot system in it is bs I agree but the gameplay is solid
Red Dragon is better
i still prefer R.U.S.E
mate, if you were smarter and more tactical. Then this would be a 10/10
The explosions look awful. How is it that Company of heroes from 2006 still has some of the best explosions??
I like COH more.
Meu Chapa que maravilha ficou este vídeo. Conheça nosso canal também, trabalhamos sobre o mesmo conteúdo.

marcus ll thank you.
Carl Golli no problem.
Rocketassistedgoat you gunna be ok buddy?
Good, you can take a bit of ribbing:-) I like you already.
"Looks boring" or is it?
[Find out next week on TH-cam comments section]
I thought this was far cry 5

@Rocketassistedgoat The original CoH is a classic RTS game. Much better than you give it credit for.
