    Debian gamer here :) very good guide to get started!
    Been playing around with ZFS on Root with Debian Stable - great for gaming so far, especially being able to set the caseinsensitive property for modding Windows games in my Lutris folder.

      ZFS on debian works great, I did many clusters and big pools with CentOS and many other distros, but debian and Centos were the only super fast ones with zfs+iscsi plus samba modified versions. I recommend that you use it for everything. I had bad colleagues sabotaging the linux servers, and they never died on me for like 6 years. Also the raid arrays where made with areca raid cards, but, we catch a guy basically pulling hard drives out of the servers trying to fk the pool. And never lose info.

    BTW, you can use KDE's Partition Manager to mount partitions... Launch KDE Partition manager:
    1. Select device (drive) in the left hand column
    2. Right click on the desired partition shown in the graphical bar and select Edit Mount Point
    3. Select the desired mount path (and any other options) and click OK.
    4. KPM will then prompt to update the /etc/fstab file

    I'm surprised the use of Fedora and Debian has become a recent trend and coincidentally I also happen to be using Fedora and Debian on separate machines. Fedora is on my Acer Nitro 5 which I've had for over a year and Debian is on my souped-up HP 8200 Elite SFF which is an old machine that runs Windows 10 surprisingly well but that 5-year-old installation has gotten so bloated and Windows 10 will expire relatively soon anyway, not to mention it doesn't have TPM or other such requirements for Windows 11 so I might as well make it a pure Linux machine.

    I tried Debian 12 bookworm and it worked well for playing. Sadly as I didn't want to "rape" the debian phylosophy, and install foreign kernels or drivers, it was not the fastest disto to play with. But this experience was quite nice. I didn't play again with SID and testing , because I've done once and destroyed a full working distro.

  • @rafa6536

    I use Debian but Stable not SID to play the one and only game I play, and on GNOME not KDE :) but needed to change default new Wayland to old X11, so it is smoother and mouse is somehow more accurate and responsive.

      If you use flatpak then you can get the latest mesa packages, mint would be easier if you want the latest system mesa as you can swap it out for kisak mesa while on debian you cant or you would need to switch to debian testing to get it.

    • @Cecep91
      @Cecep91 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Flatpak is just not good, it uses its own library and dependency. So it will add another bloat to our system, a thing that we linux users do not want.
      If you can use the .deb or .rpm of an app, just use it over the flatpak one.

    • @linuxnext
      @linuxnext  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think thats just your opinion, the majority of linux users use a mixture of flatpak and system packagss depending on what they need or want, if you need system then ok use system package managers
      For me it depends on if the flatpak is maintained officially by the developer, if it is then i can be sure the app wont break and ill get consistent updates at the same time a system package would.
      Im using arch now and the majority of apps are under flatpak except the browser, steam and discord, this is because the aur can be not trust worthy of a maintainer that could take longer to push a update for a app im using and this is their free time so having a official maintained package means i will get updates properly by someone that is probably getting paid to do so by that app company so flatpak is becoming the main choice for lots of normal users

    • @Cecep91
      @Cecep91 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@linuxnext yes, you have a good point. But flatpak is slow. Imagine u have a system runtime that had loaded a bunch of lib and then flatpak just decided to not use it. Instead it loads another one that 'maybe' similar, causing its app to boot slower than the native one.
      Then, put that logic to a gaming app. What's the point of making a 'separate-to-system' app when the app itself needs a better I/O to the system. It just doesn't make sense.
      Yes this is just my opinion. I had a lot of bad experiences using flatpak, whether in a production machine or a daily desktop machine. Also i just started my linux journey last year so maybe you know more than i do.

    • @linuxnext
      @linuxnext  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Cecep91 i see, yeah with libs being not used this has changed very recently with 1.15.7 where flatpak will remove unused dependencies, usually you would have to use a app like flatsweep to remove them but not anymore

    • @linuxnext
      @linuxnext  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ShSmith mmm on nvidia not so much, iv had a decent amount of weird issues under my rtx 2060, where simple upgrades break the drivers, gpl a thing that loads shaders for games doesnt work properly on some games, and the biggest one is Wayland which is a compositor that controls your monitors also has little weird quarks that just dont happen under amd especially 6000s, if you get a 7000s card you should be ok aswell with the latest kernel and mesa installed

    So another question, i got now everything installed, and my problem is that not only does steam flicker way to often( had the same problem with firefox and this helped MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD_PROVIDER=NVIDIA-G0 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia for the envioremnt variables) and also when i start games, atleast when they are in fullscreen, than they basicly squeezes itself? because the taskbar pops up for a second and everything flickers, this only gappens in fullscreen, so i would really like a way to fix it

      i would say older pcs/laptops like a cpu that is gen 3 or 4, it will better for the majority of things on linux but gaming wont be one of them @@josebalbuena439
      you could play some light games but nothing demanding.
      if you have a desktop gpu tho that is rather new then you can play demanding games with good performance under linux

      The game works with eac, make sure you have the proton eac runtime installed and thats it

    You can try manjaro. Its an arch based distro.

      Used manjaro and its a fantastic distro. I think i would rather use xerolinux tho for arch instead but again manjaro is good, even with the bad credit it gets sometimes or interesting decisions they make

    Bro this guide statted me on Debian 12 which is great. If I can correct some mistakes I've learned after this tutorial:
    1st: You don't need SID it's a nightmare. Get Firefox and other extras from Flatpak or Snap. Nvidia drivers aren't worth it if they aren't tested that well, specially if the trade is that your distribution gets unstable. BTW Nvidia, F you, I got a 1080 TI and the drivers aren't that good anymore even on windows, just because it isn't the new card.
    2nd: You get the W error because your source list has extra line that you copied and pasted onto it. You should have just added contrib non- free after the word main to the existing lines.
    3rd: Test before making a guide, no bs, no hate. Loved your video but it worries me that a noob will get wrong info and gets a bad impression from the distro or linux as a whole.
    4rd: Setup a Backup ASAP you are on SID, it breaks, not that often but when it does is BS.
    5th: Keep up the good work. You are helping to expand the Linux family.
    THANKS FOR INTRODUCING ME TO THIS GREAT DISTRO ❤️

    Only problem with the non-stable versions of Debian is security updates get ported to stable first. Hence why the other branches are considered "testing" and "unstable (sid)"
    Problems with Arch Linux is the distro's philosophy on stability being on the end-user entirely and the community in turn is toxic when asking for support.
    Problem with RHEL-based distros (IBM, Red Hat), Ubuntu (Canonical, Snaps) , or even SUSE Linux variants itself is are the corporations evil decisions and becoming very Microsoft-like (embrace, extend, extinguish) with a notable exception for now being Valve's SteamOS 3.x+ (based on Arch Linux) considering Valve has a history of being very consumer first in most instances, but like companies, they are not perfect either and end-users should be cautious.
