The handrails really look great, and they remind me of the rails my Dad put up on the front steps of the house I spent my teen years in. Sadly, he’s gone now but the handrails are still standing strong!

@@TheFixerHomeRepair so I’ve been avoiding my brick/mailbox repair for months now. This video definitely motivated me to go to the hardware shop today to finish this up. You rock man!
Great video, glad someone out there is showing the skills and teach homeowners how to. Have them always check code on the placement of the first post to the house. Some towns require 4 in and less, I see you chose 5 in.
Great job. I bought a masonry bit for my mom's fireplace .. because Christmas. Anyway, we both noped out. I was really intimidated. Now, I'm pretty sure I can handle it. Thanks.

things i could file under "things i wish i could send to my neighbors" because one of theirs fell off like ten years ago. as with other comments, i'd agree that stuff like concrete and brick etc seem intimidating because of fear of breaking it, so thanks for the vid
Great video! I may have to do a project like this soon, but the stairs im drilling into are natural granite rather than concrete. May need to upgrade my drill to make that happen.
The top rail design on these railings look like the railings inside of my home - built 1973. The exterior railings have the same balusters as the inside rails but the top rail just entirely flat and not as decorative. My ballisters are a combination of straight squares, twisted squares, and the occasional decorative piece.
Any thoughts on installing a handrail to a brick wall? The way our front is, it could have floor (concrete) mounted railings on both sides or floor mounted on one side and wall mounted on the other.
I have these same type of railings on my front steps but over time they have started to rust. What can I use to bring them back to their original luster?
Hey Veronica! First I would sand all of the rust off. Then use a rust encapsulator or rust reformer to help protect and prevent any future rust. After that, you can use any oil-based exterior paint. Here is an option for you amzn.to/42QbMkv . (affiliate link)
Such a nice job of explaining step by step of this project! Thanks! I came to realize to need to add a railing on my front steps as have gingerly gone up and down in the weeks after hip replacement. Do you have a link to the membrane you put under the brackets. I'll want to do that as well here in MN. Was the railing a custom build or ? My front steps are similar with just the 1 step and then up to a landing. Thanks!
Impressive work my friend. I like that. I would like to know something, we working in Asia use a 'base cup' to cover the plat and the anchorbolt nut where the handrail connects to the concrete. Would you use it?
Snow, cold. So glad I don’t live in Massachusetts any longer. It’s nice and warm here in Georgia. Nice job, your explanation as you go is excellent. You have a teacher personality.
So your railing is technically custom made, right? I need something like this but don't know where to start to actually obtain the rails and ensure they're to code.
That’s tough to say unfortunately. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won’t. If the rock is harder than the concrete in spots it might hit a rock and start to make the hole in the concrete larger and the anchors might not work at that point. If you feel resistance it is best to go slow and try to keep the drill bit from wandering. It should go through the rock, might burn out the bit faster. Hope this helps.
There are options available for different lengths of handrails depending on the number of stairs. The ones in the video are from a local place but they also have some online.
00:55 Look at the damaged brick on lower right. I hope the home owner isn't paying the full amount for this defective precast. It's right where the finger is pointing at the 01:00 mark. 10:40 The precast looks horrible and shoddily made. Look closely at the stairs. Everything else said, I like your workmanship. Are you near the Boston area?
Having set more concrete anchors than I can remember, I would have put the rail in place after drilling the holes and set the anchors through the holes in the feet as opposed to setting the anchors first then putting the rail on the anchors. When hammering in anchors I like to use a allthread coupler on the anchor as opposed to the nut, if your not careful you can damage the nut and threads on the anchor, just my experience.
only concern I might have is the cement your drilling into seems real soft/ sandy. concerned about it holding. I would have tried to bolt to the house walls maybe. (and maybe get yourself a smaller brush). good job
I have a random question, is there an easy way to figure out what drill bit you need for any sized screw? I find it so confusing and super overwhelming. Like for example is going by the thickness of the screw wrong? I know the length is a clue for a guide thingy, but I don't have those guides (that you showed in this video too) Are you able to do a mini video, potentially? XD Sorry
Nice work. Well explained and executed. But a few little things: - should've maybe filled those holes with that black or whatever silicone, after the bolts went in or better beforehand and then push em in and get rid of the excess silicone, just leaving a thin layer on top. That should've sealed em up nicely and adding another layer of antiwater, rust, freeze and exploding concrete protection to that rubbery stuff youve glued to the bases, sealing them shut. -the right side...you clearly measured wrong with that piece of board, all the bolts were way to high up, as you clearly measured to the bottom of the nut and not the top, so the bolts arent as deep in as the other side as the ends you've cut were visibly longer. ;)
@@TheFixerHomeRepair Yeah the Paint on top. I was just talking about using it for the entire underneath and have it work then together with the tape in the end, completely seal the underside off from anything. Top side, is a whole different story. :) Thx for putting the videos out to watch. 😀

If you don't have the fancy drill to measure, use tape on your bit to the measurement you need.
Tapcons will lessen your chance of cracking a tread. The wedge anchored put too much outwards pressure on stone. Concrete isn’t a problem
That's my biggest fear of doing anything like this (usually wall-related) - what if I hit rebar or steel?
