I was an apprentice machine operator at GE for a year 50 years ago. What I do remember is to use water (and maybe soap on wood) for an easier cut. Also keeps the bit a lot cooler and it lasts longer.

My instructions were literally crumpled up and thrown into the box like trash… then taped over 🤦♂️ but I got the 3-4 step model with the straight hand rail and bulistar’s.
Just installed same set used your vid to check before finishing also have a maller metal on 1 side rubber on the other and a small shop vac to get the dust thanks and keep it coming
Would have used your own anchor bolts? Was thinking of getting some 1/2 instead of those 3/8 and maybe 5 or 7 inches in lieu of the packaged bolts they provided.
Great job & looks really nice! Glad to see that you had to contend with red brick because that's what I have (red brick) and I was wondering if it could be drilled. It's important to have hand rails!
i would have removed the brick and poured concrete at least a foot square and installed stainless steel studs while wet. did this on our lamp post. no play at all . very sturdy.
I think I am going to try and find a solid cast iron rail for my mothers front porch. Might also build a little ramp out of wood and outdoor carpet. Need to rig something for her garage entry as well. Its going to be loads of fun with my 3 blown out discs in my lower back and my bad right knee!
Thanks for this. The mother in law has moved in and needs a rail for the steps. Unfortunately these may not serve for the purpose of giving her a good solid support for climbing.

I would have told the customer that it wouldn't be sturdy enough being drilled into the brick. A handrail is supposed to be sturdy. That's its entire purpose.
I hear you. 🙂 I think she was only concerned with price. She bought the rails and I did the work pro bono because of her elderly mother. They served their purpose and she has since sold the house. Incidentally the rails are still standing.
Thank you - I have to use a regular drill, but I think this is totally doable for an older woman to do! My instruction sheet was GARBAGE - your video was very clear - just have to run out and get the drill bit that is shown in the picture of the rail I purchased, but is not actually included!
I’m sorry, but I don’t remember. I think I just took the fastener to the store and held it up to bits until I found the right side. At least that’s what I usually do. I hope this helps.
I'm watching this because the anchors did not hold strong enough. I pushed it right over. The supplied concrete bit was too big if you ask me. I have to go to Lowes to see if I can find better anchor kit. I also think the base could be bigger.
Antother video stated these types hold only up to 165lbs. So a frail person- not a heavy set person. It might give out on them. I’m hoping mine will hold my weight 😳
So my paper was a bit more informative: “attack” pillar A under end B. Question: what do you do with all the other screws? I have 8 silver 1.75” & 8 copper 1” with rubber washers.
Buy gloves and save your knuckles. Also, next time charge your customer for a wider set or rails so the two top posts are secured in concrete not bricks. Those are a decorative type handrails and not made for any type of support. Handrails are really a hard job and need a lot of planing by the customer and the contractor.

Needs red head anchors, they send cheap ones. I used red heads and they are super solid.

You should use a smaller drill bit and really really forced those concrete fasteners in it would of worked better

The rail is fine it's the anchoring that weak which causes the wobble.

Can you describe the "stainless steel studs". I'm pouring concrete for the base & am looking at using threaded Concrete Anchor L-Bolts or an eye bolt

Do you think going into concrete at all points vs half in brick would have made it markedly studier?
Yes. Concrete is definitely better than brick, but brick is definitely better than mortar. thanks for the comment!

Dave, can I do this with a regular drill, or do I need to rent one that's specialized? Mine does not have a hammer setting.
I would have used 18" threaded rods in lieu of those small bolts to ensure no movement of the handrail.
Those will be a constant issue. The fasteners will loosen over time.

Yes. This definitely isn't the most robust setup.
Use a large bolt in the hole of the wrench to turn it to protect your poor knuckles

How do you know the rail will be the right size? How did you measure it out?
The customer actually bought this. I think they were just listed by the number of steps. i.e. 2 step rail, 4 step rail, etc..
How did you find/order the size? I've a job where this would work but they are steep steps going down...not your usual rise and run
If I remember correctly, Anthony, they were listed by the number of steps. So these were 2 step rails.
Will they work on a wooden porch designed like yours?
If you use lag bolts or bolts with nuts and washers underneath the wood I would think these would work ... maybe better than on masonry.

Hmmm. I don’t recall having leftovers.
You only got the 8 anchors and 4 connectors for the rails, then?
@@kimfowler1862 If I remember right, it should have been 16 anchors for the feet which had four holes each, and four bolts to hold the rails together.
the other screws are for attaching to wood steps
Mine came with the same small screws. In my case they went into 4 holes in the base covers...but I never did figure out why :)

The brick connection WILL be a problem! A longer railing would have been better to go from concrete to concrete.
Helpful hint place the cover plate on the tube before assembling the rail.
