- This is a test of the 125 gr Killertech 2 blade Mechanical broadhead by Killer Instinct. It’s designed for crossbows but can be used with vertical bows just as well.
Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
Killertech 125 gr Total Score: 85.38 = 9 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 20 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
2. Cut Size (20%, 12.34 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (.7 +" .3 = 1" = 2.8 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.5" += .3" = 1.8" = 5.04 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.5" = 4.5 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 17.4 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, Mech: 250 grams = 9.5/10 = 8.55 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +75 gram = 8.5/10 = 87.651 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10=1.2 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 17.44 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8.5" = 8.5 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
(54 layers=6.94 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (10/10 = 2 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 15.7 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (9.5/10 = 11.4 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (8/10 = 4 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (1/10 = .3 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS:
+1 no O rings
+1 pt extra forgiving flight
+.5 pts extra thick blades: .058"
TOTAL SCORE: 85.38 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
Price: $10/head

Thanks for watching
Totally binge watching your videos, best TH-cam for hunting around. Again, the flight forgiveness test is priceless
Thank you :)
I've never heard of these but I'm super impressed with this head😊
Right? I felt the same.
Excelent, as always! Thank you much for the test! I presume I was the viewer whomrecomendes these broadheads. They have been, since the first pack I bought some time ago, my choice for hunting. They have performed wonderfuly out of my Diesel X. Structural integrity has been superb in the hogs shot and, they fly as no others I have shot. Realy loving them! Thanks, again, for sharing 👍👍
Thank you! I think you were.
Reminds me of the cobra barbarian mxt
I was thinking the same thing ! Except a lot cheaper !! Lol
There so similar I thought they were made by the same people lmfao😂
@@jeffreyfred4817 might be. Probably china
I had issues with the barbarian so I reached out to them. They sent me their new updated ones for free. Good customer service.
Yep, very similar.
I love seeing decided broadheads with a great price! Have to check them out!
Thanks Mike.
I swear last night I saw these and said I wish you'd test these so I could have an idea for my daughters crossbow
:)
Perfect timing I just found these today looking for 150gn mechanicals, the 150gn models have .07in thick blades and 1 3/4 cut, there also reasonably priced leases or right around $30 for the “aircraft grade” aluminum versions not to bad in my opinion, awesome video as always this cold snap has the big boys up and moving here in Iowa
Thank you
Happy Halloween that Broadhead is a trick
:)
If I was going to shoot an expandable broadhead I would stick to rear deploying. Those tiny entrance wounds without a complete pass through leave lousy blood trails
that is not at all true, rear deploying heads are only good at wasting unnecessary energy on a large entrance hole, dulling blades on an unnecessary large entrance hole, and possibly breaking a blade on an unnecessary large entrance hole. deer don't bleed out the high side entry hole. they bleed out of the low side exit hole and out of their mouth with a proper killing shot.
I do prefer a rear deploying mech, just to make sure I get at least one large hole.
Is that not the same broadhead as the Cobra Barbarian MXT (also marketed for crossbows)? Looks identical to me.
Literally have the exact same specks 😂
Very similar.
KI is aluminum ferrule & Cobra is titanium. These are made for KI by Cobra.
hope you can test sometime some of the swat's that have 2 front blades and 2 rear blades, i hear alot of people saying there great
I sure want to. I've tested some of theirs and they said they'd send me other models a few different times, but never followed thru.
love the blade thickness, as for EVERYTHING else the 1 3/4" swhacker is designed better.
Yep.
I am going to have to say that these are a cheapened version of the Cobra Barbarian MXT Titanium for resale under a killer instinct label.
They do look and function very similarly.
I wonder what the sharpness is of the 3 edges on the tip. If it’s not cutting sharp then it’s tearing tissue and should be deducted from the overall cutting diameter. These puncture tips are pointy but get credit for cutting surfaces they don’t have
The ends are very sharp as well...but I didn't do a formal test of it. I just measure the hole it makes...all broadheads do a lot more "pushing" out of compounds than people realize. Any problems with that will be revealed in the penetration tests.
Hey John, I’d like your opinion on what broadhead you’d recommend for my wife’s setup. She shoots a Mathews Passion set at 50#, but she only has a 23” draw length. She’s shooting Carbon Express Predator 45/60 arrows. Not sure on the grain exactly. I’ve been going back and forth between Sevr 1.75” for a bigger entry, or QAD Exodus for better penetration and a smaller cut. I’m leaning towards best penetration. Thank you for your insight and all the testing! Love the channel. Mike.
Thank you. I'd go with a very small cutting 2 blade, like the Magnus Stinger or Tooth of the Arrow 2 blade...or others like that.
Are the blades stainless steel like the cobras.
Yes.
Hey Lusk what do you recommend for a the budget fixed blade broadheads? Looking at some for my son.
Depends on how inexpensive you want to go. But the Deepower one piece 3 blade or even their other 3 blade have tested VERY well. Search on TH-cam: Lusk Deepower and you'll see them. Crimson Talon Cleaver and Crocs are also an incredible deal.
@LuskArcheryAdventures ok I'll look them up and let him know thank you
@@LuskArcheryAdventures that 150gr croc is looking pretty solid.
john i was just looking at those today wondering if you tested its fate
:)
@@LuskArcheryAdventures maybe try another crossbow brand ? Ten point center punch similar to rage rear deploy no collars similar retention system to NAP 2 blade mech 1 7/8 cut.
minus the sharpness, pretty solid for a mechanical.
Yep...and though the sharpness score looks low, it's still a 9.5/10 on my scale...which is plenty sharp enough. And not too difficult to sharpen up more.
I have an open pack of nap verdict and they are very unimpressive. Have you seen them?
I haven't looked at those.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Id be interested to see how the aluminum or stainless ones do in the hand they dont make me confident.
They look like those cheap blue ones on Amazon. Have you seen them or tried them?
I don't think so.
Ladies. Love. Lusk. 😊
Haha.
decent enough head for an over the top mechanical
Yep.
Looks like a smaller cut executioner
Okay...
@@LuskArcheryAdventures hard to tell if that is with attitude or not but its an accurate observation of the bh as I stated it looks like a smaller cut version of the executioner which I think is a good design just to big of cut id like to see a side by side comparison on penetration between the two
