Amazing footage, particularly the Wimbledon branch. I grew up in Dorking so Wimbledon was always SUCH an exciting station when i was a kid, where it changed form 4SUB/4EPB to 4VEP/CIG/BEP + Diesel hauled trains AND then all the Underground Red or White R stock. And of course going past the huge depot too. This is priceless, with film inside as well. Those wooden slatted floors with cigarette butts wedged in them are a strong memory! 12:30 wow!! Gotta love a bit of snow-induced arcing too! 49:15 and 53:05 OMG wowzer
I am just glad this footage is preserved and we have the ability to watch it. I suspect some great footage has been lost to time due to old formats etc.
Great video, brings back memories of when I was a driver on the District line during the 70’s. The decision to abolish train head codes was not a popular one amongst passengers and train crew as it resulted in all trains travelling east and west displaying the former Richmond code of one light bottom right and left. At Embankment station one evening on a Wimbledon working a passenger informed me that I was displaying an incorrect head code.
1:29 - illuminated glass roundels at Victoria - all the stations from Brixton to King's Cross St Pancras once had them, now only Pimlico does (and Hatton Cross on the Piccadilly Line) . Also, the original ceiling is still in place at Victoria, replaced now, but had been missing for years!
The Class 501 with a B2 headcode at 32:26 was a Broad Street to Watford Junction via Primrose Hill service In some R stock footage you can hear the constant whine which I feel sure came from the fluorescent tube lighting control gear
Yes, I believe on the R stock it's the motor-alternator, as the feed was dc but the lights ran on ac. I remember it used to cut out going over junctions. :o)
@@EM-yk1dw sorry but... B1 was Euston - Watford, B2 Broad Street - Watford via Primrose Hill, B3 was Broad Street - Watford via Hampstead Heath, B4 was Broad Street - Richmond, B9 was for the Croxley Green branch.
We used to Travel from Barking to East Ham to see my Grandad - I remember Red, silver and Green District line train too , of have I got that wrong ? - Nice memories by the way
Sadly The Croxley Link as this proposal was dubbed was permanently shelved in around 2001. Pity because if it went ahead it would have had 4 trains an hour go through Croxley Green and West Watford to Watford Junction instead of one train a day at around 7 in the morning.
The Met line project has been on-and-off for a good 3 decades or more. The last feasibility case in the mid 2010s showed that the line would allow new housing being built adjacent to the Hospital and south western part of Watford. Now, these homes have been built, and even a bypass constructed with a bridge constructed, but no line exists to transport them to London or the Junction!
That’s okay, but if it’s a financial worry, if you think we are making from this don’t worry because we have and I don’t think we ever would make anything from TH-cam, and in a couple of weeks this video will be far down the algorithm you will have trouble finding it. We don’t put anything on hear to make money, it’s to share history, transport and social history.

Really glad you enjoyed the video, it’s why we share on here. 👍
Great footage! The R Stock nearly ended up sold to the Athens Metro which would have been amazing
Wow, I’m learning just as much from people’s comments, as in the film. 👍

I bet lots and lots have been lost over time. It’s great to see the social history side of London Underground. Thank you

People are so knowledgeable, London Underground seemed to have a bit more going on back then.

@@surreygoldprospector576 Thanks, yes it could have been that

never seen or thought of trains welding to it's track till 48:20
If there is enough heat you can weld. Thank you for your comment. 👍

Thank for your comments. It’s great to hear everyone’s little stories, and I’m glad that it bought back happy memories for you.
Never heard of a green train
Except on BR
You are right. Red and silver trains on the District Line and green trains on the adjacent London, Tilbury and Southend line.
Heavens, red 1938 stock and R stock. This is a real tine capsule
Thanks for your comment 👍

Did it all come down to money? Thank you for your comment

Was a Volume 2 ever released?
I don’t know, maybe I will see If I can find a copy at my local heritage railway. But they don’t get much London Underground
Almost certainly yes, made by Online Video. I might have a copy at home, especially if some of my own footage was included in it.
@ I would be interested to see it. I grew up in 70s along the Wimbledon branch. Those trains fascinated me.
How long ago this was filmed?
I think it’s a mix of 60’s 70’s and 80’s
More old TfL footage!
👍
I wonder whether John Laker (who filmed this) has agreed to his footage being placed on TH-cam. I shall ask him.
That is rather sinister, threatening comment
