The first out of the only two tourist batsmen to score a test ton at each of Gabba, old WACA ground of Perth, MCG, SCG and Adelaide or the five prime test hosting venues of Australia is none other than Sunil Gavaskar. The second one is Alastair Cook. 1977-78 series of as high as 5 tests was the first tour of Gavaskar from Indian side to play test series in Australia and very first test was at Gabba where he scored 113 in fourth innings and followed by scoring 127 in second test at Perth and 118 in third test at Melbourne which was the first test won by tourists India in Australia. Prior to start of that series, Gavaskar and 7 more members were approached by Kerry Packer with offer of playing in Circus Supertests instead of playing in India vs Australia test series. Gavaskar and members of Indian team were paid very less in those years by BCCI yet they refused the offer of Packer and gave priority to playing only for India , nicely slapped Packer on his face as Lillee, Marsh, Walters, Chappell brothers refused to play in Australia vs India test series but chose to become Packer Circus Loyals. By refusing to play for Australia in test series vs tourists India, Packer Circus Loyals like Lillee, Marsh, Chappell brothers , Walters had disrespected their own nation Australia as well as tourists India in words of Steve Waugh who made similiar remarks when recently tourists South Africa played with a team having lot of debutants to international test cricket in test series hosted in New Zealand. Huge respect for Gavaskar and 7 members of Indian team of 1977-78 for refusing the offer of playing in Kerry Packer Circus and giving priority to playing matches for own nation India only inspite of being paid very less in those years by BCCI.
I wonder if Gavaskar fans mocked Sachin by saying "Gavaskar faced west indies bowlers, Jeff Thompson and Dennis Lillee etc without a helmet with small bats and long boundaries"....just like how Sachin fans do to Kohli nowadays....
During Gavaskers era there was no body from India near to his records.Also no asian was near..But during Sachins era Gangully and dravid were near to sachin though their carrier was short.Ponting and Lara were on par with Tendulkar.Also in Kohli's era no other indian player is near to kohli.Ab de villiers was near but his carrier was short bcz he unnecessarily retired.Other players like Root and Smith were near or better but only in tests and they are no match to kohli in Odi and Tests.Sachin may be the best player of India as of now but in a way Gavaskar and Kohli were better than him..
@@Rockey_VR dravid was on par with him or sometimes above him. Ganguly was near. Dravid is an absolute master. You wouldnt say such a thing if you have watched him bat live. And steve smith in my opinion is best nowadays. Match winner. Kohli has lost that thing nowadays. And ab devilliers is on par with kohli. Saying that kohli is above is nonsense. Abd has faced better bowlers, kohli isnt as versatile as him. And the other fab four batsmen are on par with kohli according to me. Its not just about averaging more than 40 -50 , its about impact.
