In the first part of this video, I'll take you through the process of creating five unique intuitive abstract paintings in just 15 minutes. The rules are simple: you get to choose two colors of your choice, along with black and white. Each painting has a strict time limit of 3 minutes, which keeps the creative juices flowing and prevents any second-guessing. We'll experiment with different tools and techniques, exploring the vast realm of abstract painting.
Throughout the video, I'll talk through what I’m thinking during each painting.
Now, here comes the twist! In the second part of the video, I'll take a few extra minutes to make adjustments and enhancements to the initial paintings. This is where the real magic happens. We'll try to turn those quick paintings into more complete abstract artworks by fine-tuning and refining the details.

I love your videos! Perfect for warmups, using leftover paint and those days i dont want to paint❤
Thanks, Kim! I'm so glad these are helpful 😊
Great exercise! It's important to simply get creative juices flowing. There was an aspect about each one I liked.
Thanks, Laurie! This exercise definitely helps you jump start your creativity and keeps you from overthinking.
5 in 15 mins? No way. This exercise would fry my brain! I was frustrated watching you, thinking "C'mon, you're running out of time!" Dread to imagine the stress I would suffer doing this!
Think I'll stick with the 15 minute challenge! 🤪
Haha, I totally get it! The 5-in-15 can be a brain-fryer for sure. Sticking with the 15-minute challenge sounds like a solid plan-no stress, just fun! 😄
My favorite is the last one with the charcoal.
Thanks, Veronica!😊
What paper do you use? And how on earth do you keep it from warping and curling???
Hey Maria! All sorts - two sketchbooks have 300gsm cold press watercolor paper, one is 160 gsm mixed media paper and the others are 250 gsm mixed media paper. They do curl a little but that's not too visible on the video. However, taping them down and using less water helps them not curl as much. I use a lot of water when I'm painting on a canvas so it's a bit of an adjustment.
@@chrisloudart I sketch ideas out on paper but most of my painting is on canvas.
@mariaregan8456 I do a lot of warm-ups and ideas generation on paper. I love painting on canvas though.
This is So inspiring to try on my own! Watching it was like reading a great novel or watching a suspenseful movie and not wanting it to end! 😊my Favorite was the 3rd one- All were wonderful creations! Thank you, Chris 👍
Thanks so much, Kelli! I think the third is my favorite as well.😊
Hi Chris... very impressive - to beginn with, I thought, this is just not going to be possible, but with the end-tweaks you did, you ended up with image that I was really enjoying. I think the idea of 5 paintings in 15 mins was too stressful for me, but why not! My two favs were the blue cricle one, with lines... For me this had some geometric interest and did not rely on colours. And right from the start, the final smalley was my fav, as it had, I think the greates tension in it. You're a star, even if you do use Winsor Grey! Takes a few guts to show this out-of-comfort zone demo! Way out of my comfort zone😅😅!😅
Thanks, Emmanuel! Haha, if they made Winsor Grey, I'd use it 👍 It's a little stressful the first time you do this - it's difficult to slow down and not panic with only 3 minutes - but in addition to a few horrendous duds, I've come up with some fun ideas. The first time I did this I came away with 5 muddy messes. Recording myself, talking and painting this quickly under the time constraint was definitely more nerve wracking than I was expecting 😂😂😂. I want to see what you come up with if you give this a try this.
Shazam! Good way to get 5 paintings started. I will try 4 in 20 minutes and go from there. Most of your tweekings looked great but I was surprised by the "floral" one (my least fav.) I actually thought it worked out really well - until you felt compelled to improve it. As always, your first instincts were right. It had real energy for a small piece.
Thanks, Ann! Let me know how this goes. The first time will probably be more of a struggle, at least it was for me. It gets easier and more fun the more you do. Yeah, when I revisited the floral one I made a mess of it, but was able to fix it somewhat. I agree I probably should have left the original version alone.
Thanks. I’m just getting into abstracts . Love your work, learning a lot
Thanks, Ana! I'm so happy to hear that😊
So viele wunderbare Ideen, so viel Inspiration. Ich werde nie müde deine Videos anzuschauen und immer wieder entdecke ich etwas Neues. Dadurch werde ich auch etwas mutiger.

What type of canvas paper do you use? Thanks
Hey Ramdai! In this video I'm using all sorts of paper - two sketchbooks have 300gsm cold press watercolor paper, one is 160 gsm mixed media paper and the others are 250 gsm mixed media paper.
