Can I Drive My C63 From London To Edinburgh On One Tank Of Fuel? (400 Miles in a 6.2 V8)

- Hello everyone and welcome back! Today I want to debunk the myth of the W204 C63 AMG’s fuel economy. It’s a general consensus that it gets a bad name for fuel economy, due to its rather large displacement of it being a naturally aspirated 6.2 V8, courtesy of the M156. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case in my ownership at least, it’s been fairly frugal at times. But how frugal can a W204 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG be? Well to find out, I am going to give it the biggest challenge yet, a fuel economy challenge. The challenge in question will undertake the Mercedes from London to Edinburgh, on one tank of fuel… which is a distance of just shy of 400 miles. A tall order for a car which loves to boast single digits/low teens for MPG.

I'll use this as a justification to my parents as to why I bought a 6.2L V8 AMG now 😄
If this doesn’t justify buying one, then I don’t know what will 🤣
Your first mistake is driving in sport mode when you should of been in comfort mode so there's probably 30/40 miles off your journey straight away but good luck anyway Andy.
@@AndrewPollitt-dx6pe Thank you Andy! I only had it on controlled efficiency mode for the whole journey. I did have it in sport plus mode once I got home to fill up though.
i love this car then remembered the w205 is just beautiful and thats what ii need
Kudos to you man - no way I could not have been tempted to floor the throttle in 10 mins, let alone for 400 miles 😅
Thank you, that was one of the hardest parts of the challenge in its own right, being sensible! 😆 It was very difficult to avoid temptation, especially when you’re having to manoeuvre in and out of lanes to avoid lane hoggers!
@@NathanMannin And when other nice cars pop up alongside too 😅
@@Merc140497 I simply just had ignore them and remind myself it wasn’t worth it 😆
May I know which part of the motorway is considered safe to floor? Seems loads of speed camera everywhere?!
@@bernardshum2719 None really, it's a do your own research thing. Avoid all smart motorways, consider clear A roads, and consider taking plates off.
I’ve got an F82 M4 Competition.. and the minute I saw something like an M2, C63, or RS5 drive past my foot would be planted to the floor.. you’re too patient 😂
Trust me, any car like that drives past or towards me, I always give it some noise 😆 I was just so determined to complete this challenge, that I had to avoid temptation at all costs 😂
@@NathanMannin I feel you! My cousin has one 63 plate, he’s got a stage one map with downpipes and pushing 560 and it sounds monstrous! 😂 I was having a lil play with him today was good fun
@@TheMkBroadcast Crazy power from an N/A engine! It’s just a little too loud for me with those modifications 😆
You stopped to adjust the cameras. Did you take a pic of speedo saying 30 mpg?
this is somewhat similar to the electric range anxiety
You’re not wrong there 🤣 At least with combustion engines, you can bring fuel with you if need be 😆
Finally, someone that likes mpg figures! Great video mate
Love that! 🤣 I’m obsessed with nerding out over MPG figures, especially in cars which aren’t meant to be economical 😆
Great to meet another likeminded MPG enthusiast!
@NathanMannin I’ve been waiting a long time for a channel like yours. I thought it was just me that did this with non economical cars. My Ferrari 488 surprised me the most at how economical it was. Keep up the great work 👊🏻
@@Astar23 Thank you, that means a lot! It’s very niche content, albeit content I love to talk about and create, so I’m glad there’s others that enjoy it too! How economical is the 488? I would love to do another challenge, or something to similar to this video 😁
Eager to watch this. I just managed 445 miles in my S80 V8 on one tank. 26.5 MPG US, or nearly 32 mpg UK. There's something very satisfying about efficiency in a car that was not designed for it. It definitely takes serious restraint to stay off the accelerator..
Thank you for tuning in Derek, you’re making me miss my S80 V8! I remember without trying I got excellent fuel economy in my S80, I have no doubt it could do 32mpg plus! It is extremely rewarding getting more out of your fuel tank you ever deemed was possible. That was the hardest part of the challenge though, avoiding temptation of the accelerator pedal!
I actually love the idea of challenging yourself to take a performance car and see how well it can do on a long journey! I must do this with my Supra at some point. I really enjoyed the entire video start to finish mate, new subscriber. Great content, beautiful car as well
Thank you so much for watching it all and for subscribing! I’m glad it’s not just me who finds it fascinating 😂 Please do try it in the Supra and let me know how you get on : )
It will become like an addiction, and it satisfies so much getting some great numbers! Especially with gas prices now🤣
@@sidneyregeer8694 agreed!
Hey man! Glad to see a video from you again, been a while! Can't wait to watch it already, love these videos + it's quite long and the C63 is just a beauty 👍👍
Hello Aaron, thank you for tuning in! It’s great to still see you commenting on my videos after all this time! :)
Love this type of content, thoroughly enjoyed
Thank you for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Nathan. Sadly very interesting, lol. Loved the editing and shots of the car.
Thank you very much! There’s no shame in having interest for fuel economy 😉
brilliant video and well explained. nice to see what you can get out of a car like this especially people who want to daily drive it
Thank you for watching! 😁 That’s exactly why I made the video!
Great video, mate. I pressed the like button before even starting to watch. My dream car. I will get my own in a few years, hopefully. 😊 and 32 nog from a 6208cc petrol engine, just unbelievable. This is the proof that the way you drive is a lot more important than the size of your engine.
Thank you Daniel, that means a lot! If you have the means to do it, then I can’t urge you enough to buy one. I’m 4 years into my ownership and I’m still in the honeymoon period with mine, every drive is an exciting event. Whether that be you’re off for a spirited drive, or just down to the shops for some milk, it’s all the same. You don’t even have to drive it fast to appreciate it, just the slightest of pedal travel on the accelerator is all you need for enjoyment 😁 That is really what it comes down to like you said with fuel efficiency. The only hard part is resisting temptation for not mashing that accelerator pedal! 😆
My pleasure, mate. By the way, this is exactly what I'm thinking about this awesome car. If you are not in the mood, just jump in and start the engine, and your mood is getting better, literally straight away you hear that huge V8. Unfortunately I'm just guessing yet. But correct me if I'm wrong. 😊😊 oh yes and bonus credit to you because I noticed you filled that car with premium fuel. 😊
Great video mate. Good timing as I’m looking to get mine in the next month. I’ll be aiming for 33 mpg
Thank you Gary! Please let me know if you manage to hit that excellent MPG figure!
Brilliant video and I love the passion!
Thank you so much! I love fuel economy 🤣
Great video Nathan - probably your best yet. I live in north-west London, am originally from Doncaster and have family both there and in Edinburgh so am very familiar with the route you took and therefore know what an achievement it was to do all those miles on one tank in a C63. Keep up the good work
Thank you so much Mike! It’s the most fun I’ve ever had making a video. That’s also quite some trek you have to make to see family, at least you know you can get there on one tank in a C63!
Thanks Nathan - I've lived in London for nearly 20 years now so am used to the long travel time home; albeit I only do it on occasions. It is interesting to know that I could get to Doncaster and back, or from London to Edinburgh, on one tank in a C63. I never thought it possible until watching this; indeed I thought it'd be a stretch in my CLK280!
@@doncastermike82 Credit where’s it due for doing such a commute for so long! It definitely takes patience and avoiding temptation, as well as not get antagonised by other road users terrible lane discipline 😆 I most definitely think your CLK280 could easily do it with relative ease : )
From the north midlands to Scotland is a stunning journey, I’m lucky enough to travel up there for work and enjoy the drive every time. Great video mate 👌
Thank you very much! 😁 It is a very relaxing drive and the scenery you take in is absolutely spectacular! It is quite a contrast of the motorways I normally use which are the M40, southern M1 and M25 😆
Hypermiling in the tightest trousers known to man! Brilliant video mate, really enjoyed it.
🤣Thank you very much for watching, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video!
Brilliant video and wicked car! However, the thing that stood out most is the fact that you were listening to Rammstein! Good man!
Thank you so much! 😁 I love how you noticed that, a man of culture! They’re my favourite band and I listen to them all the time!
Congrats , beautiful car, sounds awesome look forward to ur next outing 👍
Thank you very much Mark! Unfortunately I never got to extract the noise in this video, but I can assure you it does deliver when it’s on tap! 🚰😁
Great video mate keep up the great content ❤
Thank you very much! : )
Great vid bro, instant sub 👌 👍
Thank you so much! 🙌
Brilliant. I did not think that could be done. Well done 👏
Thank you so much! This car never fails to impress me : )
The fact you went to Edinburgh and back home...props to you. If I could shake your hand i would genuinely. 😎
Thank you very much, that means a lot! It was an extremely long day, but worth while for sure! 😁
Did a similar road trip while on holiday in the UK last year and your b-roads are awesome. Wish I had my AMG with me instead of an Astra 🤣.
There are some good roads about in rural areas, especially in the Lake District, Wales & Scotland with some spectacular scenery! Ahhh there’s nothing wrong with the Astra, at least you can fully extract all the power and maximise every gear change! 😆 Where are you from and what brought you here? 😃
I wonder what a night drive to consumption would look like. Great video thanks. I intend to do a Cape Town to JHB in my w211 cdi u inspire me.
Thank you very much! I’m sure with great perseverance and patience, you’ll be able to do it! Night time would’ve been easier with traffic, but unfortunately my cameras don’t work well in the dark.
thumbs up for the effort , you should do the NC500 in scotland next
Thank you very much! I would absolutely love to do that, but I think I’ll have to fill up at least twice to do that journey! 😆
Great video, really impressed by the 6.2 V8. It would be interesting to see how the W205 and W206 models compare on such a trip, they may have smaller engines but they are also heavier (especially the W206).
Thank you very much! : ) I really would love to try a W205 and see how it fares, I imagine it would be slightly more efficient in the region of 35/36mpg. I’m not sure if the W205 or W206 has cylinder deactivation which may help also. With the W206 just being a 4 cylinder and having an electric motor to help before it runs out, I would imagine it’d get low 40’s. With that being said, the weight factor as you mentioned would play a big part too. I wish I could do the same test with both of them! 😆
@@NathanMannin W205 facelift has cylinder deactivation, not sure about W206. The W206 is crazy heavy though, at 2111kgs and the EV only range is around 7 miles, so I can’t imagine that would help that much.
@@DanielSadjadian I need to try them out!
I really enjoyed this. Must have been the slowest C63 on the road on that day. I live in Bedford, so it was good to see you focus on J13 on the M1.
Thank you very much, I’m really glad you enjoyed this! Definitely the most carefully driven C63 that day for sure, as well as most efficient 😆 It’s always great to see familiar areas in videos!
Subscribed. I used to try economy driving when I had a 2.5l Focus ST about 15 years ago and I was lucky to get 30mpg out of that. That was a standard car with no modifications. Maybe I could convince my wife that a C63 is the future. The sound alone is fantastic. It’s finding an unabused example like yours that would be difficult plus I would need to have the estate for our dogs. Hmmmm 🤔🤔
Thank you so much Gary! I’m glad you too did the same in a car which didn’t warrant a fuel economy run. I’ve heard they’re super thirsty those 2.5’s, so that’s extremely impressive to get 30mpg! They’re extremely versatile and easy to live with the C63’s. If you drive them normally then you wouldn’t find it much different from a regular C class! The estates aren’t too great in numbers, but a quick scour on autotrader is worth a look. If you have Facebook, then I’d highly recommend the C63 AMG UK group, it’s very friendly and there’s a sub group for cars for sale, and there’s often quite a few for sale for good prices. Speaking of good prices, the C63’s are quite low at the moment too! I can’t praise them highly enough, I hope your wife is sold by the idea!!😁
Fantastic job, great video
Thank you so much! 😁
Hi mate, great video. Are those runflats? Also, i'm about to take a 2000 miles trip across europe. I drive a 20 plate E200 amg line (lol) . Do you happen to know if i should respect the kPa mercedes recommends or should i deflate/inflate the tyres a bit? (new to mercedes). 2 people with normal weight luggages. Plenty of different opinions :). Thanks man and once again great video !
Thank you so much! I’m not on runflats, I’m on Michelin PS4’s. Nothing wrong with AMG line! 😁 I’m not really an expert in this field, but I would adhere to the tyre pressure guide you find inside the door as a measurement for tyre inflation. Depending how heavy both luggage is, you could inflate tyres to compensate for 3 people? Then maybe 1,000 miles into your journey, you can stop off at a petrol station and make sure the tyre pressure are still adequate :)
@@NathanMannin Thanks a lot mate. Good luck!
Great video, just subscribed
Thank you so much!
Nathan. Dude long time no see. GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK. The last video you made 8 months ago you said you had to sell your C63, since you made this video today, does that mean you didn't have to sell it? Thanks
Dude, yeah I still have me W204 C63 Sedan if you don't remember with P30/P31 and 471 😁👍👍
Hello! It’s nice to hear from you again, I can’t believe you know how long it’s been since I uploaded! Unfortunately I filmed this video before my for sale C63 video, so this was filmed last summer! Miraculously though, my C63 still hasn’t sold so it’s still in my ownership! However, it still needs to be sold unfortunately 😞 So this could be the last video I ever make on it, but I suppose it’s a great send off! 😆 I do remember you having your Performance Package saloon! I hope your ownership is treating you well? 😁
Good on you mate. Great car. Big journey. I could relate if it was maybe a more affordable vehicle perhaps.
Thank you very much Rich!
Hey Jedward. Nice video, looks like a real tidy example of a C63. You should have spent more time looking round Edinburgh.
😆😆😆 Thank you! I love the car to pieces! I wish I did spend more time looking around, unfortunately I had work early the next day so I had to get home sharpish! I definitely would love to go back and look around though!
Jedward🤣. I was thinking Johnny Bravo. Great video though. Doubt my Falcon would make it
Wow man good one you, I can barley last 4 hours in the car lol. Let alone however ling you lasted. Solid work mate.
Thank you so much! It was around 14 and a half hours of driving in total in one day 😆 It’s a surprisingly comfortable car to cruise in, podcasts help the time fly by too!
Great vid mate, epic car
Thank you! 😄
Great video. Perhaps apart from your maths at the end!! I’ve just driven from London to the French Alps and back (via Geneva) in my 2020 Cayenne S (with the 2.9 V6 from the Audi RS5) and I averaged 29.6mpg which I was astonished at. I wasn’t trying to drive particularly economically (especially trying to catch our eurotunnel on the way home)
Thank you very much! Considering you weren’t trying, that’s a very respectable fuel consumption figure!
@@NathanMannin for a 2.3ton 450hp SUV I was blown away, most of which was done at 140kph (88mph) … love the C63 though… epic car.
I picked up my C63 from North London and drove it back to Inverness. I made it just short of Glasgow before i had to fill up again. Although the leg from Glasgow to Inverness saw me destroy my MPG as I ended up sharing the road with an M4 Competition and we ended up doing fly bys of one another for some fun. If memory serves me correctly i got around 29.5mpg from London to Glasgow and it was down at 22mpg by the time i reached Inverness.
Very well done Sir!
Thank you very much! 😁
lovely video mate
Thank you very much!
The fuel level sensor in the tank will indicate a lower level when the tank is less than half full due to fuel sloshing around more. The last half of the tank also contains the reserve, the reserve display is often too early and there is actually more fuel and range available.
This and the the level sensor only goes to the top of the tank, where fuel can go all the way up the filler pipe to the fuel filler cap, giving you the illusion it stays at full for a long time
I thought you had sold that , need to catch up dont I lol , Cheers mate Great car 👍
Thank you! It’s because that was the last video I uploaded 😆 I am trying to sell it, but no one wants it, perhaps it’s a sign!
this is really fascinating shoutout the algorithm for recommending this to me
Thank you very much for watching, I’m glad you found it fascinating!
I have a 507 , I absolutely love it. Has almost every factory option including the rare adaptive cruise control
Awesome! They’re very sought after and good looking, with their extra exclusivities! I never knew adaptive cruise control was an option in the W204, I thought it was a more modern feature!
@@NathanMannin it’s a game changer on a long drive. Also get apple car play, I promise you , it’s completely transforms the car. Loves the vids mate, keep up the good work
@@lookatcha Thank you so much! I’ve never been a huge fan of adaptive cruise control on other cars, but maybe I haven’t given it a proper chance. I think I just like sticking to the same speed and I don’t like it fluctuating! I definitely would love Apple CarPlay though, it really modernises the interior too.
Really cool. I have a 2014 E350 Bluetec with the V6 diesel and get around 1000 miles when driving a constant 120 kph (75 mph) on the highway. I end up averaging about 5.2 litres per 100kms (45 US MPG or 54 UK MPG). I have the extended 80 litre (17.6 gallon) tank.
That’s really good for a V6 diesel considering you’re not trying! Imagine what you could get if you did more like 65mph!
@@NathanMannin Yeah it's very good. At 120kph in 7th gear it's at 1650 rpms. Diesels Rev low generally so they're very good on the highway. At 65mph it'll probably change down to 6th gear or rev at 1300 rpms.
The ear icon repeats the instruction. Just press the rotating knob and select cancel route guidance or press the voice command button and say cancel route guidance.
Thank you!:)
30 MPG in a 6.2L AMG V8 is amazing. I've been able to achieve 8.9l/100 [just about 32MPG UK] in my BMW 650i which has a 4.8L V8 but this is something else
I love that era of 6 series despite the controversy surrounding the looks, I’ve always loved those! I need to research what the 650i V8 sounds like now! It is so impressive what these massive V8’s can achieve when driven sensibly 😁
Probably one of the coolest cars ever built! Props from Germany.
Agreed, thank you so much and thank you Germany for making this car!
Great car buddy, I always admire a C63 when I see one 😉
Thank you! Me too!
Effortlessly stylish and dynamic.
Thank you! : )
Wonder how the 4.0 BiTurbo C63 would have done. I don’t know if all years of those have the cylinder deactivation 🤔
It’s funny you say that as I was thinking the exact same thing! I really want to try it in a W205 C63 now, and see if I can get further north, somewhere like Aberdeen 😆
I once drove a 350z from a petrol station around the corner from the nurburgring to banbury tesco on one tank, probably used 70 litres over 430 miles about 27mpg. And at times on the european leg, I was travelling at......well, i wasn't going very slowly 😂
That’s an astonishing figure considering you weren’t even trying 🤣 I’ve filled up at Banbury Tesco quite a few times too, small world!
I have to try this sometime, my bmw 645ci is similar to this but older with a smaller engine averaging 22mpg to 23mpg.
If I do a long motorway journey I suspect it'll average 28mpg to 29mpg, from what I've heard these cars never reach 30mpg. Very impressive this beast reached 32mpg.
Yes please do and let me know how you get on! I’ve always had a soft spot for the E63 generation 6 series, I’ve looked at some 645ci’s for myself too, they’re tremendous value.
Is it a 6 speed auto? My C63 has a 7 speed MCT gearbox, which definitely helps keep the revs low when cruising. I imagine a sweet spot would be cruise controlling at 60-65mph would be best for efficiency. Even so, 28 to 29 is still commendable! Thank you, I’m very proud of it for making 32.2mpg at its highest. I know it could manage 33 at a push! 😃
@@NathanMannin yeah value wise the bmw 645ci is one of the best value cars on the road. the only car that may come close is the jaguar xk 4.2.
my car is indeed a 6 speed auto, for the age of the car the box responds very nicely and the car has quite a long throttle so you need to really smash the pedal for it to fly up the road. for a 6 speed it seems to have quite long gears, it sits around 1800 - 2200 rpm at 60 but im gonna check again when im out in it tomorrow. i just checked some youtube videos of it hitting 155mph it looks like the auto can do it in 5th so 6th must be purely for economy.
the car sounds great and the looks have aged gracefully because when i show non car people it, they think the car is between 2011 and 2014. my car is a 2005, it shows that bengel was ahead of the curve in car design lol
i do miss how older cars sound, im pretty sure mine has a stock exhaust but the car sounds beefy. at low rpms its still quiet so doesnt wake people in the mornings, but when you stand on the throttle it roars
Very good watch!! ❤
Thank you so much for watching! 😄
Always enjoy a good endurance run
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
A trick I learned getting better mpg btw (I supose your car has it) but my 2011 audi a6 c7 with the 2.4tfsi 4 cylinder did better mpg in sportmode if I hold back a lot on the throttle because it will shift some 100rev earlier. The same with my sisters disco 4. That has a (2.7liter? Or 3.6 idk lol, diesel v6. Also in sportmode holding back its better for the mpg since it shifts earlier.
I could do 1 liter per 10-15km in the city in my a6 using sportmode. Even tho it was rated to do 1 in 7.x!
I bought a bmw 645ci recently and averaged on 60 mile drive back 27mpg. That involved driving through a number of towns and stopping and starting a traffic lights. For a 4.4 n/a V8? Thats great my mk3 focus St I owned before it was doing 29mpg on similar journeys.
I have managed with my E400AMG w212 about 53mpg (english) on a trip about 60 miles long. I had almost glossy worn tires though 265 back and 245 front.
53mpg in one of those!? How? 😆
@@NathanMannin Well just drive clever. Less braking higher turning speed, clear obstacles. Though it is very easy to double it, the consumption I mean. Being from continental europe we say liters per 100km not km per liter, the danish do that.
Impressive - ther best I've done is in my CLS450 4 Matic.
Luton to Aberdeen.. stopped off a while in Manchester and drove locally there too.
Still had a quarter tank left when I got to Aberdeen.
Had an indicated 800 miles range from a 3.0 petrol and I believe it would have done it.
That’s absolutely exceptional for a 3.0 petrol, it must’ve had a big fuel tank to get 800 miles range?
@@NathanMannin Yep, I believe 80 litre tank or around that figure. I was pretty happy with it, I didn't expect much so to have gotten a full days travel plus some on the second day was fantastic. I got close to 700 on that tank before I gave in and topped up as I had another long journey planned ahead.
@@syedkashaf667 a very admirable amount of range considering the engine!
Very cool! 30+ from an M156 is amazing. I've done 9000 miles in my 2012 A207 E500 M278 4.7TTV8 at an average of 26.5. Did N London to Nottm roundtrip the other weeken and averaged 31.4 without trying. If I drive like a granny I get 34mpg. And that's with a stage 1 map taking bhp from 408 to 510...
Thank you John! Very interesting choice and excellent efficiency, I’ve hardly seen any of those about, but exceptional power and gains with a map. The map might improve efficiency too with it having to work hard less to get up to speed. I suppose the next model up would be the E63 for that generation? Does it sound good?
@@NathanMannin it is a rare model. The 2009-2016 W212 E class had A207/C207 as coupe and cabrio. Originally developed to take the 3rd gen CLK badge, but they then put an E badge on it. That generation of E started with M113 derived V8s. Come 2012 and mid cycle facelift, they started dropping the newer biturbos in: the 5.5 M157 that replaced M156, and it's little brother, the M278. So yes, E63 with the 5.5TTV8 is next up. But I don't want to pay the "AMG tax" to enjoy a V8; all that's needed is a bit of exhaust fettling. Back boxes and 2nd cats off, and then yes, it does sound good! Not as good as a C63, or a Maserati GT or QP V8, but when you're in a tunnel with the roof down, it's glorious.
@@johnosullivan2017 That’s definitely a very smart way around not paying the AMG tax as well as for paying the price of one too! I imagine a remap would get it close to E63 performance too! I’m going to TH-cam what they sound like now 😁
I do love these unique model designations that fly under the radar, especially when they shock people on the road.
I know our friends across the pond in America will laugh at 400 miles but you really do feel it over here. When I visited the states I drove in Montana from Bozeman to National Glacier Park, it was around 350 miles - but felt more like a 120mile journey in the UK - you really can munch the miles over there.
400 miles is a lot over here and will get you most places in the UK, which is probably why we think it’s a lot 😆 It’s crazy to think in places like America, that 400 miles hardly scratches the surface! I’ve only ever been to Vancouver Island in North America, but the scenery I was taking in made time fly by!
This is exactly the same MPG i'm getting on my C180 CGI 1.8 turbo, 156 hp. I've checked everything on mine and all is good. If I drive 70 mph or less, I might get 38 MPG, but not more. Really impressive MPG from a C63.
What year is yours? Thank you very much, I did have to drive very carefully to get my 32mpg!
I love getting the max mpg out of cars. Had an abarth competizione. Went from South wales to Manchester and did 55 mpg. Same journey in a mk 2 audi tt petrol and did 47 mpg, id love a big engined car in the future though. A big v8 is very tempting
55mpg in one of those!? How on earth did you manage that? I had an Abarth 595 (140bhp) and I swear it did low 40’s max 😆 It is extremely satisfying getting good MPG in cars which normally boast low to high teens 😃 I most definitely cannot recommend the C63 enough, or any big V8 for that matter, they’re so endearing and charismatic. As a petrolhead, they are something you should experience, even if it’s short term because of the high running costs, it’s worth it. I mean, I didn’t anticipate owning my C63 long term, but 4 years later it’s still my ownership! I honestly do not think there’s anything which can induce the feelings what a C63 can, as well as how versatile it is too, especially at it’s price point.
Well done! My 2014 Mercedes c220cdi doesn`t do much better than that but i do have a heavy right foot! lol
Thank you! Blimey Phil, you must be maxing it out between every gear change 😁
@@NathanMannin Around town 25mpg on a motorway run easy 48mpg
@@funkyphil48MPG is woeful for a C220 CDI 😂
@Mr330d On a long run to Brighton I did get around 62mpg but that's the best I've had. Like I say I do have a heavy right foot. 😜
Please do more of these one tank videos.
I’d absolutely love to!
Ive got a Lexus is f which is a 5 litre V8. It does 32 mpg on a long run. It has a 64 litre tank which is a bit on the small side.
It is a little on the small side for how thirsty these cars can be, but with the C63 which is based on a C class, it’s already quite heavy at around 1750KG, so I guess 66 litres is better for weight saving. I love the ISF’s by the way, they’re often overlooked and look/sound magnificent! 32mpg is terrific too! How many gears does the transmission have?
@@NathanMannin It’s got 8 gears which helps with the fuel economy. I like your video as it shows that V8s are not that bad on fuel if you take it easy on a long trip. They are such beautiful engines it’s hard to go back to anything else.
@@markymark560 Thank you, under the right driving these V8’s can be more frugal. I have no idea what could possibly replace my C63, especially at its price point!
I did this journey many times in my C63 and in my CLS63, and never once i thought of doing anything like this... i can tell you how quickly i can do it though. 🤣🤣🤣
I love that! 🤣 Well now you know you can get there with relative ease, plus more!
I don't think many can beat my Manchester to Amsterdam trip on tank (Manc - Calais - Dam), alright alright I have A3 1.6 TDi but still..
I had to research that distance, but I am quite surprised it’s not much of a longer journey than it is! Google maps says 550 miles, I thought it would be a lot longer! I think my C63 could do probably 440 miles max if driven proper carefully to empty.
@@NathanMannin you know what, I thought it was longer than what it is after just looking myself 😂tbh the car was fully ladened, 4 people, packed to the brim with bags and let's just say I wasn't dawdling either.. How big is your tank? 440 miles given the engine you have doesn't sound that bad at all!
Consumption is better expressed as litres per 100 kilometres (litres/100 km) as that's what you purchase fuel in at the pumps, litres.
Ahhh, apologies! I’ve never used that conversion before as we don’t use km in the UK. I’ll try and include that conversion next time.
@@NathanManninI started using L/100km in the UK after I started monitoring my fuel usage. The pumps dispense litres so all I did was changed my odometer to display kilomotres. (MOT test odemeter record also record km if that's wahts displayed). The advantage is no conversion needed and also its a direct display of consumption e.g. 6 lites of fuel is consumed for every 100 kilometres travelled. Also more importantly its a linear
scale i.e 12 litres/100km is directly twice as much cunsumption as 6 litres/100 km. MPG is NOT linear e.g. a car getting 50mpg is NOT using half the fuel as one getting 25 mpg.
He achieved 9.39L/100KM or a true 30.08MPG
Not if you live in the U.K. it isn’t.
@@tonyhilliarduk Imagine you deciding what does and does not happen in the UK. Litres/100 kilometres is in regular use. Petrol pumps have also been dispensing petrol in litres for decades . . .
27:18 you say "why is that", it's because Mercedes like a lot of car makers use a non linear fuel gauge so it indeed does drop faster the more the guage gets towards empty. I found the same too, I even have a 2000 Merc in my collection at the moment and that does the same! 👍
Thanks for pointing that out, I thought it was just me! Which 2000 Mercedes do you have!?
@@NathanMannin my old A45 was the exact same! And I've got a 2000 mercedes C200 only 40k on the clock! It's definitely the slowest car I've ever had but it's cool and I wanted at least one efficient car, still got the 645ci V8 as well 👍 enjoyed the video man was super entertaining and interesting! :)
@@XclusiveAaron Ah yes the W203 shape, I don’t see many of those on the road anymore, it’s got less mileage than my C63! Is that good on fuel? (Sorry for the boring question) 😆 I thought it was you with the 645ci! I hope that’s treating you well, I’m just so frightened with parts and reliability of that era of 6 series, I love their styling though. I’m glad you managed to enjoy the video, even though it was all about fuel economy 😆
@@NathanMannin It's actually the W202 shape, but definitely don't see many, it's super cool though glass headlights and stuff like that just quirky! Not a boring question at all, for a 134bhp 2.0 I was expecting more but it gets about 30mpg average and you can stretch it to about 35 so respectable but soon I'm planning to absolutely baby the whole tank and see what I get (worked out manually). Managed 32.1 doing that on 645 so similar to yours! I absolutely love the 645ci it's so pretty and absolutely amazing to drive when it works, but honestly it has been a major headache issue after issue, first 6 months however was faultless! Love this sorta video though, hopefully there will be more in future on this or other cars :)👍
@@XclusiveAaron That’s the shape I prefer, I haven’t seen one of those in a long while! Is there any of rust on it? I wouldn’t say that’s a bad figure at all given its age and being a petrol! That’s what I’ve unfortunately heard with that generation of 6 series, I’m glad you’re enjoying it though. I’d so love one in the M6 guise, but that engine is so catastrophically unreliable and loves to nuke itself, I don’t think my wallet could ever recover 🤣 I have ideas of future videos on this sort of format, but it would be on a different vehicle I think!
I did Maidstone to Courcheval on less than one tank in my 420D 695 miles.
That’s excellent! No need for an EV!
Impressive. I must try the same with my F10 M5
Thank you! You’ll be pleasantly surprised how well your car will perform, as long as you keep away from that accelerator pedal! I’m sure your M5 will be more efficient and has a larger fuel tank, so maybe you could get to Aberdeen or even further!
85 litres although the best mpg I've seen on mine is low 30s on the motorway
@@kiftikhar That should be good for 600 miles if you averaged low 30’s, and went from full to empty!
I live in city area, all the previous 8 cars I have, less than 10mpg during the last 10 years.
What sort of cars have you owned? 😆
Wow just wow. Of course, no one drives like this every day with such engine power at their disposal, but in fact it is as Clarkson said when racing the Prius with the M3, which was only supposed to stick to the rear of the Prius. You don't have to give up your car to drive economically, you just need to change your driving style. Recently I tested my Focus ST MK3 2.0 EB estate. Distance 260 kilometers. One way, economical without sudden overtaking or driving above 70 mph. It came out to 6.7L/100 kilometers which equates to 42 mpg on average. However, in the other direction, I drove as if I had stolen it... and the result was 18.6L/100 kilometers, (15 mpg.). Fortunately, speed cameras are rare on our motorways. Greetings from Poland.
Dzięki Maciek! 🇵🇱 That was such an interesting test when they M3 was more economical! But that’s really what it’s all about, it’s about how you drive the car and if you can resist temptation of pressing the accelerator 😆
That is a massive contrast of fuel economy in your Focus, is that a 2.0 petrol? That’s quite a contrast as in the UK the cameras are absolutely everywhere!
@@NathanMannin Yup, 2.0 EcoBoost with 250 hp bone stock. I just filled it up with Shell`s Racing 100. That back run, I`ve maxed Focus and had 259 km/h GPS straight flat part of motorway (Ford claims 248 km/h) Could fold the mirrors with button, but forgot about it. On daily basis I drive my car "dynamicly" but still reasonably. But main purpose of my test was to check what I can achieve when I`m steady on the throtle and what if I will push it really hard. And conclusion is that car with some amount of power, bigger than average, consumes fuel depending of driving style. And that is absolutely true. You can if you want to, but same time you don`t have to. And in ordinary car maybe you would like to, but you can`t. And that is the difference, and reason to not give up nice cars.
Heard about speed cameras in UK. I really feel sorry for british car enthusiast community.
Good video. Why did you not go into Edinburgh?
Thank you very much! I didn’t stay in Edinburgh as I had to get home, as I had work early the next day. In hindsight I should’ve planned it better, as I would love to explore!
My previous car was a 428i with a stage 1 tune and the best ive ever got was 33mpg so thank you i will definitely buy one now 😂😂
Very interesting model designation, I’ve hardly seen any of those! Are they 3 litre turbo charged inline sixes? 33mpg isn’t so bad, the question is did you ever drive it carefully like I did in this video? 😆 Well I’m happy I’ve had an influence of you buying a C63, even though it’s the influence of fuel economy 😆
@NathanMannin They were introduced with the F-series which is when they also introduced the 4-series (instead of 3 coupe badging) and the 2 litre turbo which became the 30i by the time all F-series were facelifted and it replaced the 3.0 naturally aspirated I6 in all BMWs.
I had a tuned up e55 amg running 565bhp at the wheels and i got 29mpg out off that once
That’s unreal performance, what did you do to achieve that? Different pulleys? It’s very admirable to get 29mpg too, what transmission do they use?
Was convinced Gerry Khan was going to be called upon for his 5L of fuel. But nope ya did it👏
Gerry Khan 🤣 I thought so too! Thank you for watching!
It really is mind boggling just how a 6.2 ltr can do these kinds of gas mileage when my triple turbo double supercharged Honda Jazz won't even do that
It really is, but it mainly comes down to how you drive it! You have to be very careful and have a lot of patience to get MPG like this 😆
My own W204 C200 CDI would easily make it from London to Edinburgh and a fair chunk of the way back. A shame the OM646 2.1 diesel in my C200 is subject to ULEZ charges despite being more economical than the C63's 6.2 V8. This is testament to how well engineered the W204 is. It is one of the best modern Mercs.
It is rather nonsensical in my opinion too. Someone else made a comment on this video regarding ULEZ, and in the comments there is some form of potential logic as to why you have to pay the charge. I totally agree with that statement though, it’s timeless and perfectly engineered. Just out of interest, what do you average MPG wise?
Good to see that she isn’t sold yet 😮💨
Glad to see you’re still around! It’s bittersweet really, I need it sold but on the other hand I am so glad it’s still here! 😆
My C63 gave me 24 miles a gallon on a road trip. Averaged 80 mph. I was shocked how good it was.
They can be surprisingly frugal when driven carefully! I reckon had I done the whole journey without stopping, I would’ve gotten 33mpg.
Crazy it takes aslong to get from London to Edinburgh as Birmingham to Amsterdam 🤔
That’s a very interesting statistic!
1 tank there in 6 odd hours .2 tanks and 4hrs 30 and your home lol.well done .great achievement
It's got to the point I don't even keep the mpg on the screen anymore I just enjoy lol
I do enjoy the car too, I am just fascinated how these car performs when you do have to drive them conservatively on longer journeys 😃
When I first got mine i got 29mpg on a 160 mile motorway journey. By the time I hit the roundabout on the slip road it was down to 26. Life’s too short not to enjoy these cars, have fun and a smile and get 13mpg or drive miss daisy and get 20. There’s no point, better to buy another cheap runabout.
I have no need to buy a cheap runaround when this car perfectly fits the bill as it is. I regularly drive it spirited so I get more than my fair share of fun out of it. This was just an experiment I’ve always wanted to do, and to prove these cars can be way more frugal than they’re thought to be.
You want to try the how far can I drive on 0 miles challenge. That one's nerve-wracking but a fun one 😂
I don’t think my fuel pump would ever forgive me 😆
@@NathanMannin haha you might be right on that one 🤣
68 mph is an ideal speed rate set up for cruising speed on most major cars
What makes you think that just out of interest? At least I was doing near enough 68mph, with me doing 65mph 😄
Avg 19mpg is very respectable indeed, more to you than the car! You seem youre holding back on the beautiful roar😜
Thank you very much! When it comes to challenges like this, you have to avoid temptation and forget about that accelerator pedal 😆 I can assure you, when I’m not doing these challenges, it makes a lot of noise! 😆
@@NathanMannin definitely! When the focus came by I wouldve taught him already lol, I hope you fully enjoy the ride my man💪🏻 looks and seems beautiful!
those are some tight trousers...
I'm genuinely impressed that engine got 32mpg
The M156 is a mighty engine!
I could do that journey and half way back in my 2010 BMW 330D on 1 tank, easy peasy. And I consider that car to be somewhat thirsty.
On public roads, the BMW diesel is already stupidly pointlessly fast.
BTW cruise set on the car speedo as 65 is probably an actual 62 or 61. I set my cruise speeds according to my Tomtom satnav.
Diesels are superb, it makes me sad how they’re being fazed out, the range and performance they give in their 6 cylinder guise is phenomenal. I had a go in a 2104 330d Touring and I remember that being silly quick, but also just a perfect all rounder. I have noticed my Waze maps says I’m doing more like 62/63, when I’m on cruise control at 65mph.
Great to see your C63 is still around. The market for these is awful atm, no way I'll be selling mine!
Thank you! It is rather diabolical unless you sell at rock bottom price, which I cannot bring myself to do. I’d keep it forever if I could!
Why is market awful? Market for e92 M3 is boombing
@@DaleSteel Are they? That’s rather interesting, perhaps there’s just more C63’s on the market and it’s saturated.
I thought the title was gonna say can I drive my car c 63 from London the Edinburgh without breaking down
How much you paid for the whole tank of fuel If you dont mind me asking ?
I think at the time of fuel prices for this video, if I ran it completely empty, it would’ve cost me around £105.
@NathanMannin Thanks for sharing as I am trying to do as much research about the potential costs of owning it as I plan to buy one next year and potentially ruin myself financially but at least I can take it from my bucket list xD
@@Strechu No worries! It’s definitely a car to tick off the bucket list, even if it’s for a few months! £105 would be from full to completely empty. In the real world you’d probably fill up at a quarter left, so maybe more realistically £75?
I can get down to 9.x per 100km on a long trip. Key is to sit in 7th
The wrong use of futile made me crack up
Yes unfortunately others have pointed this out too, I was caught up in the perilous challenge ahead, that I mistaken the word futile for vital!
I'm actually impressed I though you would get mid to early 20s and straight fail. Not saying an Uber driver should buy one but better than expected
Thank you very much! 😆 I’m still startled it made it too! It’s just the case of can you avoid temptation of burying your foot on the throttle!
Is there a TLDW version?
Oh no, what a shame
