Looks like a solid option in the segment. My parents bought the previous generation in 2018 and really like it. It's been 7 years and no issues. This new model looks good inside and out, seems well equipped and a solid option as a daily driver. Good job GM.
Its like when you call fat people "plus sized" or "full figured"... its slow! That said, who cares, its an Equinox. What is not great is that they somehow managed to make a FWD CVT version only get 31mpg on the highway with 170hp. Nissan from the same size engine manages over 200hp and yet 6mpg better highway fuel economy, and the vehicles are virtually identical in size. Woops!
These were just starting to make a debut when I bought my Trax. Seems a good deal of comments about that could be said about the Equinox too, which means it should be a pretty decent all around vehicle. I really love my Trax, and this looks much more comfortable and a bit more upscale, but it should be for the additional costs. Great review Tom, and I typically enjoy your perspective. I also hope they do bring out a hybrid version, with AWD it could be a real hit here in the great lakes/snowbelt region.
My Daughter has a Trax and when I saw this I thought more closely related until I finally saw the Traverse. My wife is thinking the same color as my daughter’s car would be funny.
It'll probably be a stripped LT, and that's a shame. Typically vehicles at Hertz, Avis and Enterprise are de-contented. To Moi, that’s a huge mistake automakers make. It’s essentially offering up the worst example to those who travel, basically people who can afford to buy cars.
Nice review. I have a 2009 Equinox and I'm thinking about getting a new one. I laughed when I saw how you measure the cargo space. I have several Costco videos playing piano the past few years. 🎹👍
I have a ‘23 and after 30k I’m still very happy with it. I do my own maintenance on it. Everyone dumps on the 1.5, and for those that do, must need something more than a 1.5 in their lives. Is it sluggish? Yes, but it’s a 1.5. What do you expect? Is it enough for a mid size SUV? Some would say yes, some say meh. But the more engine, the less mpg. Just the way it is. I’d much rather have a touch of lag and 33 mpg than a pointless burst off a light and 24 mpg. I think the CVT in the FWD will hurt FWD sales, but overall I think the ‘25 is a nice refresh. Now a standard 2.0 or 2.5 would be wonderful mated to a 6 or 8 speed, but price would be more and MPG would suffer. Nice review!
I have a '23 GMC Terrain Denali AWD w/ 14k miles. Love the car & the physical buttons! Perfect size & performance for me. Agree, the 1.5L is perfectly adequate. It's not a drag race queen, but that is not what I want a crossover SUV for anyway. Replaced the factory paper air filter w/ & K&N air filter in the factory air filter box - possibly get another 1mpg and do get overall smoother acceleration. Averaging 27mpg in 2/3 city driving, 1/3 freeway driving. Only "complaint" is that I wish the center display was 2" bigger.
I had a previous generation as a rental once. Of all the cars I’ve driven over the years, it was definitely one of them. It looks like the new one actually had some effort made to be slightly interesting, but such a huge mistake that there’s no hybrid (at least not yet)
Thanks , Tom & Martin for another awesome review. @Tom: are you getting any pressure from the manufacturer to review their top of the line models or is it just a personal choice? I’d rather watch the review of a model that I am most likely to buy instead of the one featuring all of the bells and whistles that I don’t need or want. Thanks anyway. Thanks to your supportive circles Keep ‘em coming!
I get no pressure one way or the other. But like most folks doing reviews, I get what I can get. I generally have no say on trim levels and nearly all manufacturers supply top trims so writers can experience the full suite of options and tech.
Personally, Im not a fan of “faux” off road crossovers. For one thing, I really don’t need an off-roader. But if I did need one I wouldn’t want a vehicle that basically only provides a different set of tires. You can put a different set of tires on any vehicle. And there are so many better options out there. So I think the Activ is silly. If you’re going to be driving on paved roads buy tires for paved roads. I would prefer to know more about the RS version of the Equinox. But this video definitely helps put the Equinox on my radar for our next car.
I bought a 2025 Equinox 2 weeks ago, I really regret it!!!! The transmission does not want to shift into 8th gear, once in awhile it will. GM has a bulletin out that says it's alright to be that way and won't do anything about it. 7th gear at 70 is 2200 RPM 8th is 1800 RPM . BUYER BEWARE
looks like a mitsubishi outlander or eclipse cross in the front. dislike the trend of making the DRLs look like headlights, but i suppose that's the industry trend nowadays.
Hi Tom. Thank you for another awesome review. This vehicle is on my shopping list since it’s the right size and offers AWD. I’ve been having a hard time finding and Active AWD to test drive since I’m sure the 8speed automatic is definitely a different driving experience from the FWD CVT, since I want to have the AWD capability when going to the snow. I have a question. You mentioned it in your video about the sound system. You indicated that you should up grade the system, but I didn’t see this package offered on Chevy’s website. Is an upgrade available or were you indicating going to an after market for speakers to do this? I would be surprised if they do not have this option, but then again there is no model available with Chevy Super Cruise. So maybe at this price point you get what you get and just limited to a few things. So wanted to see if you can clarify. Also based on the sound system that you have listened to when testing out some of the other brands in this category, did any of the other vehicles in this category (like the RAV 4) have a better sound system or are they the same. If the sound system was better which one base did you like the best. I think driving dynamics is also enhanced with a good sound system. So to me that is also high on my list my list of must haves when choosing a vehicle. Thank you in advance for your feedback to my questions. Appreciate the excellent review.
If you can find any AWD model, it will have the 8-speed if that helps. You just can't audition the AT tires of the ACTIV. As far as I can tell this is the only sound system available, so yes, aftermarket. I found that backing off the midrange substantially, then adding lots of bass and treble helped balance things out FWIW. It's been a long time since I've driven RAV4 or any base competitors so hard to compare sound systems there. Usually I get loaded vehicles from the manufacturers for better or worse. I suggest trying it out for yourself with music you trust, could have been an anomaly. The base system in Colorado is really quite good. Equinox is more of a budget model so Super Cruise is not offered, at least for now.
3:04 Actually, the AWD is automatic, just like in every vehicle. The only difference is that GM allows you to force the vehicle into FWD mode, where it won't even try to engage the rear even during slip. Others only engage on slip, and others yet like Hyundai will engage AWD from every stop and then disengage as the vehicle is rolling if its not needed.
We have the 2018 LT with the 2.0 and it has around 75,000 miles compared to the chevy 2500hd that I drive with barely around 18,000 miles. I've been retired for 14 years and i don't drive much.
@@DrivenCarReviews ah thanks for the clarification! Now it makes sense. BTW I agree it is beautiful looking both outside and the inside is truly outstanding. Well done GM.
It's been explained to me that GM wants people to rely on the native navi system so route planning and charging is seamless. aa and CP don't have access to the vehicles diagnostics. That's the story anyhow....
The Chevy Equinox Plus (in China) is a plug-in hybrid, and it achieves 96 miles on a single charge. With a 12.2-gallon fuel tank, SAIC-GM claims the Equinox Plus will cruise for 621 miles or more. Why don't we have it here? GM USA claims it's not right for the American market. That's a laugh.
Knowing what I know about the Chinese testing cycle, that range is probably closer to 65 in the real world. There are all sorts of reasons why we don't have it here including supply chain and manufacturing complexity. But I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the US in the next 18 months (if not something very similar).
Really baffles me you would need to engage AWD in 2025... I'm just thinking about the average folks who are going to hop in and expect it to function like nearly every other AWD SUV for the last 25 years and expect it to automatically engage when its needed
From what I remember from talking to an engineer about the 3rd gen, it was a way to eke out an extra bit of efficiency, by defaulting to FWD. At least this one allows staying in AWD after power cycling.
I had the 2018 Equinox and now bought a 2025. I love the AWD selection option. I leave it in FWD for probably 90% of my driving and select AWD only when road conditions warrant it. Why does a person need AWD on beautiful summer days? And, leaving it in FWD gives a little better mileage. Ultimately, I chose the Equinox over other makes because of this option.
I like you get to chose it to engage AWD and not needing slip for the computer system to engaging it. It reminds my of my Toyota 4Runner which have automatic diff when engaging in 4WD. One time it didn’t have enough slippage to engage and luckily was able to do a maneuver in 2WD and do it again which resulted and I was like I wished this just have the system engaged it magically when I pressed a button, since if that maneuver didn’t work I would have been stuck (in the snow). I also though in the off road mode, it will do the AWD mode automatically.
Tom isn’t the flashiest, buts he’s one of the few whose opinion I trust. He’s very objective, and doesn’t have the same quirky hang ups about door closing sounds and seat colors like some other reviewers.
I prefer sport utility vehicles with a more substantial engine like on the 2025 hyundai tucson 2.5 litre engine with 8spd automatic but in Canada awd is standard equipment sorry equinox
I would never consider one because of the lame engine. That goes for most of its competitors as well. GM should stand out from the crowd and offer two more engine options. A hybrid and the more powerful engine that is in the Traverse. I don't know anyone who appreciates accelerating slowly.
They offer this new Equinox in China with a PHEV hybrid, its called the Equinox plus. Its on TH-cam, i bet they offer a version of it here. I'm the proud owner of a 2019 Equinox LT FWD with the 1.5,, this one is light years ahead!
