Hey MD ! Your goldfish tank needs to have a sump tank attached to it whereby you could place all the floating plants as well as whatever plants you need in it . Your filtration would be placed in the sump and with the sump , more water volume is added too , with all the equipment in the sump your tank looks more zen like !
Looking great as usual MD! Absolutely try the wiggle-butts in a planted tank - I've gotten away with Vals, Crypts etc before now, the important thing is to let everything put down strong roots first. Pearl weed may be too delicate & tasty but it might also outgrow their urge to graze - Always worth a try! My instinct is also that you will need more and better filtration for these guys before long. Good luck and take care!
I am with you, I hate tank maintenance! I currently have no fish because of the constant cleaning. You have inspired me to do a heavily planted dirted low tech tank! The maintenance on that type of tank I can handle. Thanks MD! Gina Hetlage
Hi MD, How is the "Amazon Tetra Tank" doing? I feel like it's been a while since we've seen those guys! Did the electric blue acara manage to keep any of their fry?
I actually have 9 aquariums and I can honestly say, I used to do a lot of tank maintenance, but then I started adding plants and whew! What a difference!
This is what my red ear slider tanks will look like if I don't keep up with them on a weekly basis. You might want to switch to an internal canister filter, preferably one that cycles a GPH that's triple the water volume. Make sure the flow can be adjusted and turned down.
Just wanted to say that your channel inspired me into setting a small planted tank. I had always been interested in fish tanks but never before though that I could keep one, just because everyone says I'll need a lot of equipment and maintenance. These planted tank videos are an eyeopener for me, so thank you a lot
Love your videos, but since you took such care this time with the goldfish I want you to succeed and not have to go through losing them too early! goldfish are bit different from other fish. They need water changes and large water volume because they secrete a hormone that stops them from growing if it's at a certain concentration. The only way to get rid of it is through water changes and the only way for it not to have negative effects on the goldfish's lifespan is to make sure it's always seriously diluted.
I don't think the hormone is bad at all. It's their defensive mechanism to make sure they don't need as much food in space limited tank. Also smaller bodied goldfish is usually have longer life span
I have a massive fancy goldfish in a planted tank and I don’t do water changes very often. Maybe every 9-12 weeks i’ll do a 50% change when I scrub the hard scape down. Usually, I just top it off and rinse my sponge filter. The fish is fully mature and measures over 9” tip to tail. If that’s stunted, then idk what full grown is supposed to be.
MD, you really need to upgrade the ranchu tank, they aren’t like other fish, they produce growth inhibiting hormones in the water, so you need to get them in at least a 40g when they’re small like that, and a 55 or 60g once fully grown. A 15g is way too small for those goldfish
Thanks for your views of goldfish keeping in a plant-free environment. I had a lot of troubles in the past with keeping my tank clean and had to do water changes almost semi-monthly with a large filter (also semi-monthly changes) in an 160 L aquarium with my goldfishes. After about 4 years and month after our move some died suddenly of a sickness (we presumed stress from moving the setup to a house that did not have adequate heating during the winter, and the fact that the water we used changed, although my tests at the time showed nothing out of the ordinary). I researched a lot about quarantining and using the right meds on fish, but I always overlooked vegetation for keeping a low-tech fish-tank. Your channel is opening my eyes! I love your views and enthusiasm with your hobby/now-job. sincerely, a Belgian viewer
A pearl weed carpet would look fantastic, but getting them to be established in the tank might be a problem, since the goldfish will probably try to eat it. But pothos hanging inside the filter might be a good idea, as said by a other comment.
You have to put a mesh bag around the roots Or they’ll eat that too Tried water sprite too just floating and they eat that Can’t have plants with goldfish lol Tried anubias they ate that too🤣
At 3:20, it’s my opinion and experience, it’s the type and length of light exposure plus one plant (like cabomba) that is kicking that tanks butt. ❤. Love you, cute stuff. Keep ‘em comin
I have a 4ft aquarium and I actually like all the keeping it clean part. People have said ... I don't know how you can be bothered with all that, but I honestly love it.
I must confess something. Sometimes i click Like before I've even finished watching the vlog because the odds of me NOT liking it are astronomical, so I just save time and click it straight away. MD never lets me down.
Look back 2 years at your Ikebana style tank. I use this for my quarantine tank, not only do the fish benefit by having plants to hide in or explore, but being able to remove the pl ants does help in cleaning (and they can be stored in another tank if the plants need to recover from the goldfish).
goldfish will do great in a well planted tank and more filteration what might be a better idea is a plenum/undergravel filter if you'd like to rarely touch the goldfish set up. doing great so far keep it up
@Blue Bird they absolutely will. We tried plants of all types and sizes and none are a match for our goldfish. If they weren't eating the plants they were uprooting them and fighting over which side of the tank they belonged on.
@@kittycodding4183 Aww I'm sorry, I've never had a problem, feeding my goldfish properly in a planted aquarium, goldfish do enjoy grazing alot but thats because they require alot of plant matter in they're diet. i gave them veggies to help supplement that requirement. ☺
@An Phillips I think our goldfish are half pig half catfish. We're currently trying to hand feed train them to see if it helps. Like I said, if they don't eat the plants they fight over what side of the tank they should be and destroy the plants so we also might try some moss balls they can play with. They were just over an inch when we got them 2 years ago. Now they're 10" and 7". We didn't see this coming lol.
I heard it's possible, but they need to have enough veggies I guess and maybe some hardy plants. That doesn't stop my algae eaters (SAE, Rinelocaria, Rainbow Sharkminow) from going to town on some plants (with other fish joining) from time to time, but I'm starting to have too much of some plants there. I'm considering replacing one of my smaller tanks with 300l aquarium just for a few goldfish, gravel bed and several valisneria gigantea. Not sure I'm going with that idea, but giant val is hardy plant, doesn't need much light and it grows like crazy with the right amount of nutrients. I think it's the plant MD had to trim (it could be Sagittaria). It reaches about 3 m (9 ft) and leaves everything below in a shadow.
I have several aquariums (6 incl. paludarium), but lately I've been setting all with low maintenance in mind. Smaller tanks require water change once in 3-4 weeks, big tank can stand 3 months if I'm cleaning my filters more often, but I need to trim plants weekly in there. Always have to push myself to do it, but then it all comes easily and the end result is the best part.
Hey I just wanted to thank you for all the knowledge you gave me when starting out planted tanks. My first 2 were big and forgiving. But didn't look half as good as yours. But your videos are inspiring me to do a 5 gallon aquascape and plant it heavily and make it look nice.
My goldfish setup is 75 gallon with an Oase biomaster 350 thermo. Goldfish need a lot of filtration but I slow the flow with a sponge on the outflow of half of the outflow tube, seems to work wonders moving waste to the inlet but not too strong for the fish. My outlet is also installed vertically and my bubbler is next to my outflow so it blows my bubbles… that way I can get a sense of when my filters are clogging my bubbles don’t move so much.
Quite honestly the current filter seems a tad small for the sheer bulk of waste these fish produce, I'd upgrade to a canister filter to cut down on maintenance, as hangback filters tend to fall rather short when it comes to goldfish or other "waste-heavy" fish. Also the gravel and rocks make it easier in general for pockets of filth/debris to gather up, which make it more difficult for you to vaccum (that's why I would keep my goldfish in a bare tank if I were to have more fish nowadays). As for the floating plants (or any plants in general), I think they'll only cause extra debris because the goldfish will just tear them appart ahaha. If you really want some green, an option would be Anubias, but you'd have to make the lights a bit dimmer as they dont take direct light very well. My JBL Cristalprofi e1501 and later on my Fluval FX4 were been great at keeping a good bacteria medium without too much debris or algae buildup fogging up the water, and the only weekly maintenance you'd expect with just these 3 fish would be the weekly water changes and some occasional substrate vaccuming. I'd argue that a filter of the size of the two I mentioned would last a month or even more without a rinse, and even then there probably wouldn't be much muck in it to be honest. The JBL was far easier to pop open and clean, whereas the Fluval is an absolute powerhouse (I still use it for my turtles, which produce A LOT of crap). Think about it (you probably even have other canister filters lying aroung), its a good investment. ;)
Great video. A moss wall for a background would be cool. I think an external filter or sump would be a good idea to turn the water over more and deal with all that waste, might lessen the maintenance?
When ever I have kept goldfish I kept them in a 29 gal but have always used both an under-gravel and a hanger filter and that has worked well. I never planted tanks at all until recently.
I used to keep goldfish and they are most definitely poop machines. I think plants will definitely help. They’re so sweet, but a lot more work. And for some reason, in this video, I really noticed how gorgeous your eyes are. Not meant creepily, just a compliment because it’s the truth!
Go for the plants! I actually have pretty good success with plants and my goldfish. All about picking fast growing plants, and keeping the goldfish well fed so they keep snacking on plants to a minimum.
A carpet of some sort in the goldie tank would be awesome. I was looking into doing a moss carpet with mine and apparently laying the moss between two stainless steel mess sheets along the bottom works really well.
House plants up top! Before I moved all my goldfish to an outdoor pond, I always wanted to setup some sort of hydroponics/sump-filled-with-plants lol. You could try something crazy like that!
you could stick some plant cuttings on the top of the goldfish tank, wont take away from the water volume but will consume a ton of nutrients from the water
I'm with you on low maintenance planted tanks (I have 2), I watch videos of guys with cichlids and how many water changes and how much of a water change they do, and it definitely is not for me, but kudos to them.
Could you have done a similar concept to your cliff shrimp tank and what you did in the archer fish tank? Have sections of raised areas with house plants planted into the tank water and then smaller plants and moss planted in the crevices for the fish to nibble on?
Love your videos!! You should do a video on how you go about cycling a tank and water changes for the new hobbiest. If you have one please let me know what one it is.
I have a great setup for my four gold fish. 350 gallon per hour filter system and my tank is crazy clean plus a couple of snails along with some glo tetra all in the same same home.
repens are usually delicate plants and not suitable for the bulldozers of the fish world like goldfish. Even his pearlweed idea is going to take a beating tbh.
What about a very small scale aquaponics style system? A goldfish tank just as you already have. Link that to a dutch style planted tank with just a few algae eaters only. So the planted tank becomes the filter for the goldfish tank. If you placed a small "radial flow settler" (google it) filter in between you could even deal with the heavier waste as well. However, just a suggestion, keep doing what makes you happy. 🙂
btw, prime time aquatics made a video about rinsing media in tap water. the prolonged exposure to chlorine is what kills the bacteria. you can rinse your media in tap water just fine
im currently planning out a 40 gallong fancy tank with a similar scape. but instead of plants in the tank its going to have an aquaponic bed as a filter. hopefully still the joy of the clean goldfish scape and some of the ease of an actual planted tank
I've seen several beautiful goldfish tanks. The problem most people have is that goldfish need much colder water than we keep them in. If you run a chiller on it, they're relatively clean fish. Relatively :)
I enjoy the maintenance because i can see the development of the animals and the plants a lot better. I do run a high tech setup with "blue diamond" shrimps in it, zeebra danios and a betta and if i didnt get my hands wet and had my hands around the plants i would never see the babies :D
I have a large fancy goldfish in a planted tank and I will tell you from experience that adding plants after the fish is in it is a massive headache. They will get uprooted constantly. I lost about half my plants bc the fish wouldn’t leave them alone long enough for their roots to get established. With that being said - Java fern glued to a rock does really well, free floating hornwort does excellent, and if you have some really large Anubis you can get the roots buried under some rocks to keep it down, that should survive well. Other than that, you’re gonna be replanting stuff a few times a day for weeks until it gets established. Good luck with it if that’s the route you go.
Dang that Archer fish tank is so beautiful!! Your tanks really make me want to try my hand at fish keeping again!! For now I'll just admire yours I suppose lol
i have tons of pothos inside of goldfihs tanks thriving. keep the pothos inside of screen mesh . by using screens, you can get creative and even put as many pothos you can and just get them loaded inside the mesh all the way up until the goldfish cant get them. thats a simple hack :)
You made me laugh with this one. xD I didn't know Ranchu goldfish before your first video, and I still think they're so friggin' cute! I want some. Not sure I could have a tank big enough in my apartment, though. LOL
The only advice I could give you for having floating plants is to maybe get some kind of plastic attachment for the tank that will hook to the side and has almost like a strainer design so water can move freely in and out but the gold fish won't be able to eat them.
What about the water overflowing into other aquarium where you keep the plants? That's how you take care of two things at the same time: storage plants do the water filtration and get enough nutrients to grow
I put ludwigia cuttings into my mrs goldfish tank and so far they're pumping living of the poop, plus we grew java moss onto stones and put them in for extra filtering, we're gonna try some hornwart next 😉
I have two comet goldfish (i.e., one Sarasa and one Shubunkin) in a tank that I scaped using one of your videos as a guide. It is the one for beginners using Java fern, anubias, and purple buce. I believe you called it a grow-out tank for the plants. But I thought it was beautiful! My goldfish don’t bother the plants at all. However, I do feed them duckweed and salvina from my other tanks as a treat. I feel like it is a win-win. Nothing is wasted. The comet goldfish will go in my garden pond come Spring. There, I have comet goldfish and two Koi. I want to then purchase fancy tail goldfish for the cold water aquarium. MD, I just love your work and appreciate everything that I’ve learned from your channel. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!🎄🎁🐠🌱🐟
My goldfish have eaten moss and most other plants (even swords, they'd eat the new leaves). I've had success with swarf sag. It carpets eventually and they seem to leave it alone. You can also throw some shrimp in..some will be snacks but many will thrive!
My brother had tinfoil barbs, absolutely fantastic fish but they eat plants and they were a hassle to look after too. They were stunning though, was like having a school of piranhas, feeding time was chaos
I kept some Shubunkin goldfish in a planted tank. I had quite a bit of Limnophilia Sesilifloria, Valisneria Spiralis, and some Amazon Swords. They munched on the Limnophilia a little but didn’t kill anything. They did make a huge mess. Compared to small tropicals the bio load is crazy.
something I experienced as a goldfish keeper. Top filter and sponge filter works the best. HOB and canister have the issue of clogging up the filter resulting in overflowing (bypass the filter media) and restricted flow respectively. as mentioned, goldfish are poop machines. filter need to be able to be clean regularly for effective filtering to ensure good water quality/parameters and to prevent health issues as fancy goldfish are prone to.
Undersump, though will take more space will help you more on maintenance and stuff, you just need to change filter sponges and do some water change once in a while.
I would put water weed (Elodea) in the aquarium, it is a fast growing plant so it absorbs a lot of nitrate and the goldfish can eat it. I did that myself when I had young goldfish. I then put it against the back wall and every time they got way too long I cut them shorter and put the cutting in front of them so that there eventually was a carpet of those plants. I have never had hazy water with the goldfish myself so maybe this will help.
I have a proposal... Why not set up a mini aquaponics system with the gold fish tank water? It's a bit tricky because of overflow risks.. But if done properly you could have strawberries made from goldfish poop🤣🤣.. I have semi successfully set up aquaponics systems on ground tanks with giant gaurami, who also won't let any plants survive..
Get a proper external canister filter on the goldfish would be my shout, needs more flow to disturb the nuggets. I have java fern and also some limnophila sessiliflora in with mine and that seems to not be munched so should help!

Pearl weed may be too delicate & tasty but it might also outgrow their urge to graze - Always worth a try! My instinct is also that you will need more and better filtration for these guys before long. Good luck and take care!
Love the range of tanks and styles you do - Can't wait to emulate your studio in my own fish room!
Tank maintenance, water changes, trimming and pottering in my tanks is my favourite of week. One time my mind is clear!
I am with you, I hate tank maintenance! I currently have no fish because of the constant cleaning. You have inspired me to do a heavily planted dirted low tech tank! The maintenance on that type of tank I can handle. Thanks MD! Gina Hetlage
Hi MD,
How is the "Amazon Tetra Tank" doing?
I feel like it's been a while since we've seen those guys! Did the electric blue acara manage to keep any of their fry?
I actually have 9 aquariums and I can honestly say, I used to do a lot of tank maintenance, but then I started adding plants and whew! What a difference!
This is what my red ear slider tanks will look like if I don't keep up with them on a weekly basis. You might want to switch to an internal canister filter, preferably one that cycles a GPH that's triple the water volume. Make sure the flow can be adjusted and turned down.
Ha-ha: “Messy, and I don’t mean Lionel”. What a final match!!!
Just wanted to say that your channel inspired me into setting a small planted tank. I had always been interested in fish tanks but never before though that I could keep one, just because everyone says I'll need a lot of equipment and maintenance. These planted tank videos are an eyeopener for me, so thank you a lot
did u make a video? i wanna see
You need a better filter on the goldfish tank with more flow. Try a seachem tidal 110 or 75 for that size tank
Agree
I don't think the hormone is bad at all. It's their defensive mechanism to make sure they don't need as much food in space limited tank. Also smaller bodied goldfish is usually have longer life span
@@samsamalo90 Their organs continue to grow, they 100% should be able to grow to full size
@@samsamalo90 like the other commenter said their hormone stuns their growth but not the growth of their organs
I'm so invested in these water piggies 🐷 and your journey with them! I cannot wait to see if pearlweed pans out.
MD, you really need to upgrade the ranchu tank, they aren’t like other fish, they produce growth inhibiting hormones in the water, so you need to get them in at least a 40g when they’re small like that, and a 55 or 60g once fully grown. A 15g is way too small for those goldfish
Not to mention that HOB isn’t going to cut it , and once a month water changes I don’t think so .
Actually it's a pro move, 15g with a Hobblestone filtration unit easily sets a thriving environment for a couple Chuies
That filter is trash
/
50Liter per goldie is sufficiënt. A once ever other week water change (75%) would also give better growth
You have to put a mesh bag around the roots Or they’ll eat that too
Tried water sprite too just floating and they eat that
Can’t have plants with goldfish lol
Tried anubias they ate that too🤣
At 3:20, it’s my opinion and experience, it’s the type and length of light exposure plus one plant (like cabomba) that is kicking that tanks butt.
MD, would you consider painting the rear glass on the goldfish tank black? I think it would make the goldfish and scape really pop
Look back 2 years at your Ikebana style tank. I use this for my quarantine tank, not only do the fish benefit by having plants to hide in or explore, but being able to remove the pl
ants does help in cleaning (and they can be stored in another tank if the plants need to recover from the goldfish).
goldfish will do great in a well planted tank and more filteration what might be a better idea is a plenum/undergravel filter if you'd like to rarely touch the goldfish set up. doing great so far keep it up
The issue is they will most definitely eat almost all plants.
Painting the back of that tank black will really make the goldfish colours pop. Oh and try hornwort as a plant. Goldfish don't tend to eat it.
I feel like a HOB with some terrestrial plants in it could be another way to boost filtration without the little piggies eating all of the roots.
Never had any luck with carpets and my goldfish but I keep trying. Get some plants in it!
I have goldfish and I am always cleaning the tanks but it always gives me smth to do also to sort out babies it's pretty fun
But goldfish gain stimulation and mental enrichment from sifting through sand
House plants up top! Before I moved all my goldfish to an outdoor pond, I always wanted to setup some sort of hydroponics/sump-filled-with-plants lol. You could try something crazy like that!
A plant you can put on the goldfish tank that they will definitely not eat but will make for a good nutrient absorber are pothos. Lots of pothos.
you could stick some plant cuttings on the top of the goldfish tank, wont take away from the water volume but will consume a ton of nutrients from the water
I have sarasa goldfish and the plants I've found that can actually survive and thrive with goldfish so far have been anubias & lucky bamboo
I have lot's of Anubias, Amazon Sword, and Anachris in with my Orandas. The plants are doing quite well, just have to anchor them down well..
Love your videos. Newbie ranchu keeper here, but I have seen people combine goldfish tanks with planted walls & aquaponics.
I'm with you on low maintenance planted tanks (I have 2), I watch videos of guys with cichlids and how many water changes and how much of a water change they do, and it definitely is not for me, but kudos to them.
Wondering if you'll be doing a video on planting the golfish tank with a list of plants that could go with them
i must say big ranchus are a sight to behold
When I buy plants for my goldfish, I know it's a salad bar, not a garden!
350 gallon per hour filter system and my tank is crazy clean plus a couple of snails along with some glo tetra all in the same same home.
juncus repen bushing up eventually would look really cool. i don't ever see anyone using it but it has been my favorite almost zero maintenance plant
repens are usually delicate plants and not suitable for the bulldozers of the fish world like goldfish. Even his pearlweed idea is going to take a beating tbh.
I have lots of African chiclids. But I run above tank sumps full of live plants to tackle all the nitrates.
Lol I love tank maintanance. I find it theraputic.
As for goldfish, mine have always eaten or dug up any plants I've added. 🤣
@ 5:51 MD looks at the top of the tank and the ranchu follow his gaze 😍
btw, prime time aquatics made a video about rinsing media in tap water. the prolonged exposure to chlorine is what kills the bacteria. you can rinse your media in tap water just fine
im currently planning out a 40 gallong fancy tank with a similar scape. but instead of plants in the tank its going to have an aquaponic bed as a filter. hopefully still the joy of the clean goldfish scape and some of the ease of an actual planted tank
Oh my god! A high tech tank by MD?? i already know its going to be awesome!
So much fun to watch you scraping off the green stuff on the glass 😅
Plants in that tank will be expensive snacks.
LOL
True, they need a big tank (100 l per goldfish), that's why I'm not sure I will get them anytime soon, but I'm considering it.
Might be worth it to switch to a small canister like a UNS Delta for that tank.
Loving these regular uploads MD!
The only advice I could give you for having floating plants is to maybe get some kind of plastic attachment for the tank that will hook to the side and has almost like a strainer design so water can move freely in and out but the gold fish won't be able to eat them.
Goldfish are incredible and actually do a very good job of cleaning an aquarium but just go to the bathroom a lot lol
You’ve been on record pace with all the videos these past few weeks! Love the content!
I have 3 goldfish as well! I would love to see the pearlweed planted in the tank! I'm curious what they won't eat.
Didnt realize the football pun at first😆
“That fish is not dead he likes to sleep right there” *fish twitches 😂
I wish I found your videos before I got a fish a few years ago. I would have gone with a planted tank because I hated the maintenance like you do.
A carpet? With pooping machines?? Not sure that's the best idea you've ever had.
My goldfish have eaten moss and most other plants (even swords, they'd eat the new leaves). I've had success with swarf sag. It carpets eventually and they seem to leave it alone. You can also throw some shrimp in..some will be snacks but many will thrive!
I think an African chiclid setup or south American with apistos would be nice
MD how about a crinum calimistratum in with the goldfish? Don’t think I’ve seen you use that plant!
can you include the music in your video descriptions, I always love your background music
Love den. . . . Preparedness. Rico Suavé. Good boy, Hell Boy. He must have watch “Shaft”. Lol
“Hats off to those absolute lunatics” I love it. MD saying what we’re all thinking.
good luck with that approach

I love it, i have more o less the same configuration, love iit
