John Leventhal was a huge part of the making of the Steady On album. He played a number of the instruments. He produced the album and cowrote the songs.
Wow. I've been searching for a great video of her since I started covering her songs in the mid 90's. One of the most captivating solo performers I've ever seen. Up there with Richard Thompson. Anyway, I am blown away by this video, which captures her true passion, edge and amazing talent. What a treasure. You should read her memoir titled after this song. Love you Shawn.
I think this from 1988. I have the recording called "Live 88". Shawn is so damn good! I saw her live in 1994. Best live performance I've ever seen! With Larry Klein (bass) and Steuart Smith (electric guitar).
It is the first time I hear shawn performing this song as it is in her album, including the enchanting line " Snake's in the grass, better step on the gas". undoubtedly this video is essential for understanding shawn colvin's professional and artistic evolution. What a fresh performance. I am so grateful for uplouding it.
Still love this incredible artist after all these years. I still remember experiencing her massive talent first on the David Letterman show in 1990 and then I was TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY by her 1st Austin City Limits show back in 1991. Sadly, that complete show is impossible to find anywhere anymore except for this one song here on TH-cam. "Diamond in the Rough" th-cam.com/video/bGK0wUOmd5o/w-d-xo.html . My video tape of that performance, and watching it at pivotal moments in my life afterward, probably saved my soul a time or two as it washed over me and helped me to survive some crappy life moments. Her album "Steady On" from back in 1989 was a masterpiece of artistic beauty. I can never thank her enough for how she helped to save me, but I'll try...Shawn, thanks ever so much!!!
Simply natural and brilliant. I know S.Colvin repertoire since 28 years and her performances in live are simply largely better than the arrangments in studio. She makes vocal interpretation like she plays on her guitar, and that's perfect.
Yes! I saw her at Philly Folk Fest in 1988. I think she was wearing a hat… have some old style photos from then. I had to ‘record’ the moment to remember her… ha! Now trying to find a video that may have been posted from back then. Brings back memories of my time at the festival with my dad.
Gosh shes so playful on this version compared to her others. Her others are like better versions of studio albums but this her personality was different

As good as it gets - the definitive performance of an astonishingly good song.
Love her and this was my introduction to her , I had bought the TELLURIDE Bluegrass festival video
The little girl in the story became that diamond.
well damn that was so freaking good and how special to see her from so long ago when the song was fresh and new......still compelling...
love this !!!!!!!!

I agree! Used to work out lots of her songs on Cover Girl album before I wrote my own. This is ace in every way!!!
@@christinacrosby6787 Yes, I liked her Cover Girl album also and do her version of "Someday".
agree 💗
@@LDBrownArt”Someday” is the absolute pinnacle of that album, and her version captures every nuance of the pathos and defiance of that song!
Back again... God she's just KILLIN' this!!!! Not a single vocal game- I think she's feeling every one of those twists!!!!
Thank you Shawn for everything.
bill, that's what i say too!! i'll spare you 'why', but i did get to see her finally, up-close in a small theater. 🙂

A youngster exuding massive talent. Love it. Cool to look back.
Thank you WXRT for playing this song! Man Shawn can really belt it out!
Exceptional. Really transformative.
I saw the original broadcast and became an instant fan.
She is one of my favorite guitarists as well.
Has a percussive style.

She's too underrated!
Nothing is better than this...
This really is incredible!🙌

she is a product of Joni Mitchell and thereafter Rickie Lee Jones ....
anyone else here love her song -"i don't want to live on the moon "?
Telluride Bluegrass festival ? If so, I was there and went out-of-body for most of the set. This was a very healing song for me! Thx for posting!
You're most welcome! Lucky for you to have seen those performances, at the time. Envious ;)

It is Telluride '91....I was there too. Transfixed.
Happy birthday. 2021
Looks like Telluride. Wish I was there then!
Yep Telluride.
@@mandobob Damn, I've lived in Denver my whole life and could have seen this, but I suppose ten year-old me didn't appreciate Shawn yet.
She still comes to Telluride every year! Catered brunch for her in February!
Telluride. Her best performance IMHO.
Gosh shes so playful on this version compared to her others. Her others are like better versions of studio albums but this her personality was different
Wicked good
"git up and dance" ! sounds like an old English or Scottish folk tune, doesn't it....?
I hope there´s more Shawn Colvin's performances coming.
ps, i wrote you a message yesterday.
steelygray I have one or two more clips of her to post sometime soon ;)
