I am 74 , I just woke up to Shawn. She is beyond spiritual in her messages. When I was tumbling Falling down the slopes this song was to be written 40 years later. Trail Skiing alone on a full moon night.., Leaving the Catch on new fallen Snow.., ( Who could say no)? So I break that binding , ...I was tumbling falling down the slope. Shawn Colvin knows one good ski to get out on, That'll work. I went a mile or so back, and drove home from the forested park, and its Moon lit slopes.
Yep! She IS the freakin' folk rock kickass QUEEN! Nobody comes close to her level of poetry, humor, sarcasm and imagery that is in her songs. Nuff said. Shawn Colvin is so underrated its a CRIME!
Every time I see this, I wonder where all the young girls are to follow in her footsteps. Her talent literally jumps through the screen, and her guitar playing takes my breath away. I've loved you since you started, Shawn, and I will always get lost in the beauty of your singular gift.
This was right after the album came out, so '89 or '90. This was the first taping of the Austin City Limits season and some of the staff was wondering how one vocal mic and one guitar would carry a show for 28 minutes. Boy were we wrong, she blew everyone away and it was one of the best recordings in the 30+ years of the show. Obviously strong material, her voice was (is) amazing and beautiful, different guitar playing. "May we all find salvation in professions that heal." Sing it Shawn!
It was this night that I first ever heard Shawn Colvin. It was this night that I decided that, when I finished grad school, I was gonna get a guitar to learn to play like this. Dreams and aspirations are good. :)
wow.. just BRILLiant. Shawn is one of a handful of artists who, with one voice & one guitar, can create a lovely musical world where no other instruments are necessary.
Hard to describe how much I Iove this. I've watched it many times, and I think it's just about as perfect as it could be. It's tragic that the rest of the show isn't available.
This was in 1991 at Colvin's first ACL appearance (season 16, episode 10). She opened the show, John Hammond closed it. Her set list: Another Long One Riding Shotgun Down The Avalanche Steady On Cry Like An Angel Roadrunner Theme Song Diamond In The Rough The Dead Of The Night

Love this clip. Saw her around the time of this video at the Lonestar Roadhouse in NYC shortly after her album debuted, opening for Donald Fagen's New York Rock n Soul Revue, and have been in love ever since.
I saw her do this in concert maybe 20 years ago. We were sitting in the fifth row and it was one of those moments. The crowd was transfixed and she was in the zone and feeling it!
...just absolute class, I haven't seen her for many years, this was a vintage performance done by Ms. Shawn Colvin. I've always felt that she has such a beautiful musical touch between her vocals and her wonderful guitar playing. I do not know where you are now ma'am, but I'm still an absolute fan of your music. Where ever you are, please be well.
A lovely lady. Great singer songwriter. Her acoustic guitar playing just knocks me out. This is one of my favorite videos.

Man, holy lord,..... that's some guitar work! ....and we all know about the singing.... i just keep coming back for more. Saw this the night it aired... taped it... and I still come back here to YT again and again!
This is one of my MOST loved pieces of recorded music by one of my most loved singers. I adore Shawn's voice and this performance early in her career is just fabulous. I wish I could have a pristine copy of this video SOOO much. If anyone can find a better copy PLEASE upload it or send me a copy. And thanks to Anestice to uploading this video. Love it to BITS!
Her first Austin City Limits: My VHS copy was recorded on Mar. 23, 1991. I transferred the audio to a cassette (and later to CD, and later to mp3!) and it's been my favorite SC "album" ever since. Don't get me wrong: the studio albums are fantastic ("One Cool Remove" is well-nestled in my top 10 favorite songs of all time) but this! Just one lovely woman, her lovely words and melodies, her lovely voice and guitar playing...sublime! (The Roadrunner Theme is a cute duet with her sister Kay.)
Oh, my gosh, I recorded this on VHS, too, on that same night in 1991 - I still have it! And, YES, the Roadrunner duet is so much fun! I've seen her in concert several times because of that serendipitous night recording her on Austin City Limits, just by accident! (She's still beautiful, isn't she?)
Thank you for this video. I had a band for a while with one of my coworkers in 91, and we would sing Shawn's songs for hours to vocalize. Laura is gone now...and when I hear this I have good memories and love in my heart because this is a summation of our lives at that time. And now Laura is an angel. Many blessings.
I was not familiar with her until seeing her perform this and the rest of Steady On while opening for Richard Thompson back in March of 1990. And of course, RT did not disappoint either.
Wow! It's been years since I have seen this performance/video. What an amazing talent! I think I still have a portion of this ACL on VHS. I'll have to hunt it down. Like so many other people that commented, when I first saw this performance I was just awestruck how good she was. I was fortunate to see her perform live in Tempe, AZ not too long after this ACL at a small venue and then again a short time later in Sedona, AZ. Great concerts. It so exciting to see new talent emerging....
As burgor57 noted, one of THE very best performances from one of the best out there. I cherish this early ACL taping -- it's a gem....every number. Even her singing "Roadrunner" with her sister Kay. ;-)
love Shawn Colvin, because it's as if she pulls the unspoken thoughts in my head and sets them to beautiful music, I can listen to again and again and again and again.
Incredible, this is so together. so effortlessly brilliant. This is a person who has the singer-songwriter thang down...,people wonder: How could a symphony orchestra sound like a singer with a guitar...,this is it.

I don't know what it is about Shawn Colvin...one cannot deny that there are better voices, better guitar players, better looking people. And yet, I find her totally intoxicating!!!
Need the full episode. If it's the one I recall, she invites her sister up on stage to do their version of the Road Runner theme song.Big thanks to anyone who can find THAT clip!!
At the risk off offending anyone, Shawn is on par with Joni. Her guitar playing is superb, her tunings are effective, her songwriting is bold, funny, insightful and sarcastic. Her voice is seductive and addictive. Someone walked up to me one day when I was playing, and he handed me her first CD. I was blown away then, and nothing's changed for me through the years. I used to have her full ACL set on videocassette. I would pay $50 for a solid and clear version of this whole performance from ACL. Any takers?

great post, it would seem miss colvin is the female version of king midas everything she touches turns to gold, excellent performance, i saw this set on ACL what a real gem she is, and a kinda scary lookin guitar strap,
I would like this version, not any other version, to play at my funeral. It won't be long from now. Does anyone know how ro make this happen? Any feedback would mean so much. Just the audio. This version Only, not any other version. Thank you in advance.
You have great taste. : ) And, I know this will sound quite "silly", being as it is that I know absolutely nothing about you other than the comment you just made, but I trust my gut/intuition as it is almost always spot on, and I have a verrry strong hunch/feeling that you are an amazing, unique, and special individual, yourself. My gut is just feeling very strongly 'about this one.'
God I love this woman. I have been listening to her for almost 30 years and I never grow tired of listening to her wonderful songwriting

The streets of my town are not
What they were
They are haloed in anger, bitter
And hurt
And it's not so you'd notice but
It's a sinister thing
Like the wheels of ambition at
The christening
So I went out walking on the
Streets of the dead
With a chip on my shoulder
And a voice in my head
It said you have been brought here
Though you don't know what for
Well the mystery train is coming
Right to your door
And I hear you calling, you
Don't have to call so loud
I see you falling and you don't
Have to walk so proud
You can run all night but we
Can take you where
You can cry like an angel
There were high school night dances
When we played stump the band
We were raising each other
In a strange land
There were hard pills to swallow
But we drank 'em all down
Oh the nights were too short then
And now they're a little too long
I hear you calling and you
Don't have to call so loud
I see you falling and you don't
Have to walk so proud
You can run all night but we
Can take you where
You can shout out in anger
You can laugh like a fool
You can cry like an angel
So look homeward baby
Keep your eyes on the sky
They will never forgive you
So don't ask them to try
This is your party, I know
It's not your ideal
May we all find salvation
In professions that heal
I hear you calling, you
Don't have to call so loud
I see you falling and you don't
Have to walk so proud
You can run all night but we
Can take you where
You can shout out an answer
You can laugh like a fool
You can call up to heaven
We'll be listening to you
You can sing hallelujah
You can fly like a bird
You can cry like angel
When there are no words

Happy Birthday Shawn Colvin
Music is the wind
you are a red hot whistle
with a quantum mind
and a universal soul
presented through
the emotional prism
of your angelic face
expressed within
your lightening bolt voice
filtered through the deep
purple blue mesh
of cosmic grace
and with this instrument
Sunny Came Home
on a mission
you burned my house
to the ground
all my memories
nothing to be found
but this smoke
you
and my rapt desire
Sunny
build a new house
make it strong
choose your cornerstone
from your best song
set it true
make one room special
for your love song
make the kitchen tight and warm
where your friends can sing along
make the living room wide enough
to include all those treasures
upon which you decide
have your love carry you
across the threshold
like a blushing bride
then sing
for all the love you can’t hide
make the ceilings high
to include all the inspiration
in the starry sky
fill the spaces in between
with grace notes
high and sweet
for angels seldom seen
leave a seat
for the strangers you meet
on the mystic country roads
that intersect at the nexus
of all your dreams
in blessed eternal
Austin Texas
end
Happy Birthday Angel/Candlekin

Violet Catcher Of Divine Wind
If I Were The Wind
If I were the wind
I would stand so still
like a butterfly pinned
against straining will
I would wait
I would hum softly
but never stir fate
or ruffle the lofty dreams
of my angel guide
I would be so patient
while she planned the ride
to forever’s folded tent
I would whisper so low
as if I’d never sinned
still I wouldn’t blow
until you gathered me in
My love never could you say
that I was hard to catch
or even hard to find
for when you breathe
I come in and attach
to your lungs and your heart
and I’ll sing through your mind
never were we apart
Now I know you know
you breathed me in at the very start
I am wind, you are fire
that you breathe
is my desire
For my eternal beloved Violet

Sweet Soul Caledonia
Caledonia sweet child of God
Goddess of Ireland
Born of the Goddess of Love
with gifts from above
we sing of thee today
now we know
you’ll never go away
Angel of Ireland Van
has sung you home
no more do we roam
in Dublin we sing
for you wear the ring
that we kiss
we live for this
nirvana and bliss
and a pint of Guiness
We worship you Van

This was posted on Van Morrison's 'Caledonia Soul Music' on Mother's Day so I took a few liberties with the spirit world I guess. Happy Mother's Day Violet

Does anyone have this whole concert on TH-cam?
A full orchestra with one woman and one guitar...
I would like this version, not any other version, to play at my funeral. It won't be long from now. Does anyone know how ro make this happen? Any feedback would mean so much. Just the audio. This version Only, not any other version. Thank you in advance.
You have great taste. : )
And, I know this will sound quite "silly", being as it is that I know absolutely nothing about you other than the comment you just made, but I trust my gut/intuition as it is almost always spot on, and I have a verrry strong hunch/feeling that you are an amazing, unique, and special individual, yourself. My gut is just feeling very strongly 'about this one.'
She is so sweet and amazing... even in that sorta of white night-suite she is dressed with
gorgeous sweet woman. x
