    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    To keep Clark's (Henry Cavill) powers hidden, Jonathan (Kevin Costner) refuses his help when a tornado is about to engulf him.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    As the planet of Krypton crumbles, General Zod (Michael Shannon) stages a coup as concerned leader Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and his wife send their infant son Kal-El to a distant world called Earth. While the young child travels through space with an object containing the DNA of his home planet, General Zod and his cohorts are sentenced to an eternity in a black-hole prison. Named Clark and raised by kindly farmers Jonathan (Kevin Costner) and Martha Kent (Diane Lane), young Kal-El lives in fear of what might happen should his neighbors learn about his extraterrestrial origins, eventually exploring the world in search of himself. In time, Clark's travels take him to a frozen tundra, where the American government has discovered an 18,000-year-old anomaly buried deep in the ice. Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane (Amy Adams) has just come to investigate when, after venturing out with her camera, she has a profound encounter with Clark. Convinced that his presence on Earth is proof of life on other planets, Lois finds her attempt to publish the story thwarted by her boss Perry White (Laurence Fishburne), who rejects it outright. Later, the airwaves are hijacked by General Zod, who threatens to obliterate the human race if they fail to hand over Kal-El within 24 hours. Forced to embrace his otherworldly origins for the first time in his life, Clark Kent dons the special suit from Krypton and prepares to take a stand against an enemy far more powerful than any he's ever known.

    What makes his death even sadder is that clark’s last words were in spite of his father. He tells him that he isn’t his real father, something any parent could attest is probably one of the most heart wrenching things your child can say to you. Worse being the fact that those were his last words to the only father clark ever knew, or at least, the closest thing to a father he ever had.

      Wow you're so right. This was Jonathan Kent's gift to him. The feeling of standing by and doing nothing would turn him into the man of steel who would do everything in his power to save those around him. It echoes the scene in the original Richard Donner Superman but instead of a heart attack it was a tornado.
      Clark's post event line is poignant in both films: "All those things I can do. All those powers. And I couldn't even save him.
      "

    • @cuzza4321
      @cuzza4321 4 ปีที่แล้ว +189

      Its just bullshit, nobody knows who they are or their identity, anybody who makes the claims will just be acused of being traumatized by the tornado. I think we can all agree if we have the power to save a loved one but will "expose" our power by doing so we would immediately take that trade. This is so frustrating its such a no brainer here.

      the only thing he knew he had at this time was super strength heat vision/x-ray vision his dad didn't want people knowing he had powers yet because he knew how that would react just like how they reacted in batman v superman ultimate edition it took superman sacrificing himself for people to finally understand what he stood for

  • @TheThirdBaseGawd
    @TheThirdBaseGawd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +575

    The way the humans reacted onces they found out about Clark, literally sacrificing him for their own greater good is exactly the reason Johnathan died in this scene. He knew Clark could save all of humanity but humanity wasn't worthy of Clark. Not because he was "Superman" but because that was his son, and no one is truly worthy of your child.

The point was Jonathan was willing to sacrifice his life to keep his son safe and that Clark understood this and he made the right decision. But the superman I would have loved more is the one that makes mistakes and still saves his father no matter what. Jonathan cared more about his son's safety than his own, so why can't Clark care more about his dad's safety than his own too.

    At this moment, Clark is just around 19 or 20. Didn't even know his full potential and power. For every dad, his child is precious and he didn't want any harm to his son. So he tried to save the dog on his own. This was a message to Clark from his father that no life is left unchecked. And to protect the people you love from any harm just like his father had done to save him knowing or unknowing that his son is indestructible. It doesn't matter he knew or not, he wouldn't let his child go near any tornado. For him, Clark is not Superman, he is his child. That is what a father would do. You would know if you are one.

      I'm all for this scene, I think it's one of the best, and I do think that the emotions captured in the scene deliver powerful performances.
      I just don't really understand the logic. It's kind of a non sequitur.
      You're telling me that Jonathan is teaching Clark he can't save everyone, by forcing him to NOT save him?
      That doesn't make any sense at all. Clark clearly had the ability to rescue his own father at that moment in time. If anything, it wouldn't have been the birth of Superman, but rather, an instance of Clark saving his own father without assuming the Superman persona.
      Why can't we apply the same logic to the scene where Clark saves the workers of the oil rig? Why wasn't that moment too soon for Clark to show his abilities? There, he was able to rescue more people than just one man and a dog, and in my opinion, an exploding oil rig matches the destruction of a tornado.
      No, what I think Jonathan is doing in this scene is teaching his son HOW to sacrifice. He is teaching him that when the cause or the circumstance demands a Superman, that Clark had better be ready to give his life for that cause.
      But if you guys are gonna argue that Jonathan is teaching Clark that he can't save everyone, I think that's a flawed argument. That would just be an example of a stubborn father stifling his son's growth as well as Superman's greatness.

      Clark hadn't learned to fly at that time, nor did he have the super speed. He was barely an adult at the time.

    "We've been doing the best we can, making it up as we go... maybe our best isn't good enough anymore." - J. Kent.
    That is the most realist statement a parent can ever make. Most parents love their children, and work their asses off to give that child a better childhood than what they themselves had, despite their imperfections both as people and as parents, and it's sad that too many people, when they're growing up, don't appreciate all the hard work and sacrifices their parents make for them.
    But it doesn't have to be that way. If you're young, and your parents are still supporting you, think about all the things that they could be doing, but are giving up to provide you with what you need, and then ask yourself what you can do for them, to express gratitude, and then follow through.
    One day, your parents won't be around, and all you'll have is their memory. You can either look back on it with joy, or with regret, and that all depends on how you treat them now, while you have them.

      Jonathan and Clark had an argument before his death.
      The argument is to show Clark is Still young and not ready for the real world.
      Pa Kent's biggest fear is the government taking clark and basically doing terrible evil things.
      No parent would want that.
      So Jonathan knows that Clark isn't READY after all that stuff with him saving the kids on the bus etc.
      Pete's mom made it more difficult and kept calling it an act of God.
      You must also remember this version of superman doesn't have superspeed.
      If he saved Johnathan he would have revealed himself to the people watching.
      That would be the last thing Johnathan would want.
