This film was so special to me. It’s the first time since I was a kid that I looked at anyone besides Christopher Reeves and saw Superman-and, I got to take my young children to see it in the theater.
Zach Snyder understands what makes Clark special, and it’s not his powers; it’s how little he uses them when he doesn’t have to. But there’s still an edge, an aura of danger, like the semi tangled up in logs. And the trauma he endures as a kid informs him rather than consuming him as it’s beautifully smothered by the love, gentle authority, and wisdom of his adoptive parents. Every scene with Kevin and Diane is a joy. And I don’t care what anyone says about it: Henry is beautiful to look at.
The Krypton scenes had stakes, and the codexes replacing crystals and ampoules made sense. Zod’s motivations also held water; he wasn’t just some megalomaniac aspirant autarch. He had but one purpose, and the irony of his raison d’etre is that he’s proof that coded lives don’t work well with the evolution of a people; he can’t adapt to Joe-El’s vision for the new Kryptonian society. Also, Faora is tough as nails, beautiful as snow, and caring in her own way-and Non wasn’t retarded.
The Zimmer score gives me chills, especially Clark’s theme; it’s sad, it carries a burden, but it’s also hopeful, uplifting. A truly worthy successor to John Williams’s instantly recognizable theme for the Donnerverse, the updated signature motif opts for subtlety and deeper emotion than bright brass, perfectly reflecting the shift in tone for an audience that had matured over the thirty-five years between Superman (1978) and Man of Steel (2013).
Man of Steel is the Superman of my adulthood just as the original Donner film gave me the Superman of my youth.
James Gunn has the mightiest of red boots to fill with his version to kick off the DCU. I’m not rooting for it to fail like some others; I just hope it can live up to the greatest of expectations. Because Cavill is now my favorite Superman, and I’m not sure he’ll ever not be.

I wonder who actually "knows" what it means. If you're basing humanity on visceral impulses to drive forward, you might be onto something. But big cats and apex predators have that urge also. I look through human history and it would seem that the bold have a period of decadence where what they do is only as good as the environment they shape, the people they can influence. Humanity is actually really awesome, but it happens in spurts. I think it comes down to a certain encoding that compels us to look at things through a lens of justice. When we can abide by it, we might get a decent beat on what's true

@@Artorionjust as there are ethnic cultures, there are regional, state, country cultures, and of course; there is HUMAN culture, too. I’m all for independent thinking and focusing in on how we feel as individual beings. These “cultures” do not cancel each other out. And I remember when the first Superman movie came out with Christopher Reeves. He was a hero to many. I hope his family finds peace with what happened to Chris. But "Man of Steel" gets me everytime. It wells up my sense of pride and patriotism. And the moral compass to do the right thing, when it isn't easy. I instilled this sense of doing the right thing in my son. We've since been estranged. I hope he remembers what I taught him. And that we can put our differences aside... One day. My son's name is Clark.

How do you not hear someone trashing a truck from inside a bar?
