    I like that matilda and emma's outfits are usually more "realistic" than other influencers, but it is true that some people go way overboard thinking they're major fashion icons. except maybe for bestdressed

    the reason i like Matilda Djerf and Emma's just-shorts-and-tank-top outfits is because it is easy to emulate for someone who lives out in the suburbs where everything is incredibly casual. wearing literally anything but leggings and a hoodie, or something like lulu lemon shorts for summer time, is seen as a bit stylish and "out there." most of these basic influencer outfits would definitely be seen as stylish here, but are tame enough that i would only be a little worried about getting comments from other girls. and, it is helpful to me because copying and taking inspo from these outfits helps me build up basics in my wardrobe as someone who is recently getting into style.

      Also because i think a lot of Emma's outfits are easily replicated with clothes at the thrift/your own closet/or cheap stores! Most of Emma's outfits in that video were when she was on vacay too...and I think they were realistic & comfy :)

      I know exactly how you feel! Where I live, when a girl wears something other than athletic shorts, pajama bottoms, crocs, or oversized t shirts it’s like “omg what did you dress up for?” I’m super aware of how I do or don’t fit in with a group, and it makes it hard for me to have fun wearing what I want (which is usually a bit more sophisticated) without feeling self conscious

    I sometimes feel like a weird outfit is automatically labelled "a fit" when in reality - it's just a weird outfit. Devon's first outfit is literally chaotic: saying that it's a good fit is the exact "influencer effect" you're talking about.

    For me the “influencer” effect isn’t seen so much in an individual photo, but in context of all their content. For me many influencers have a go-to outfit that they repeat over and over again. I was following one influencer who I thought was a minimalist with a capsule wardrobe because of her very neutral looks mostly of neutral pants, blazer and loafers. Turns out she had the same outfit in MULTIPLES. She did a wardrobe clean out on her channel and had rails and rails of similar items. Like 50 beige blazers!!! For me the styling talent lies in multiple very different looks but still tying it all together with your own unique flair. It’s not limited to youth, perfect figures or gender.
    Channels I recommend: Um, my own🙈

    I think an interesting take on here is that what makes it a 'fit' is often when there's something we've not seen before - whether its a combination like a windbreaker and sequin skirt, a 'length' thats been out of fashion for a while, a whacky item like a cow sock (personally thought that was a fit, maybe I'll stop buying grey ankle socks no one sees). Our eyes get bored easily and are always looking for new things that shock and delight us

  • @kendra555

    this was a fun one! i will say, a lot of these outfits aren’t a fit to meeee but i love the composition of the photos! it’s the pictures as a whole that i enjoy from most of these which is kinda interesting since they’re fashion influencers haha

  • @mw5218
    @mw5218 2 ปีที่แล้ว +226

    I think it's weird to say that something isn't a fit because it's neutral or basic or boring. Like yes, a white top - denim shorts - white socks - black shoes - black purse fit, isn't exciting to the eye and I wouldn't walk past someone and think 'omg, an icon'. But that doesn't make it less of a fit. It's still well composed, reuses colors in a way that makes it all look put together and is cute.
    And I think most girls that wear that, don't wear that to stand out or have people turn their heads on the streets. Is casual wear, it's comfortable and it's still I fit, I'd say

  • @brightstar301
    @brightstar301 2 ปีที่แล้ว +119

    I actually don't like the whole "an outfit being basic used as an insult" attitude, I think some of the most famous fashion icons had very "basic" style like Audrey Heburn and because of this classic look, their outfits are still being emmulated fifty years later. I like styles like Matilda's because I like to dress like that every day and it's more realistic for my closet than buying stuff I would only wear once and never again. Bestdressed's outfits are nice to look at, but I would personally never wear it in real life and that's okay too.

  • @amartinez5326
    @amartinez5326 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    this is so weird bc I had the exact opposite opinion of all the outfits! Most of the outfits you said were "just an influencer" were what I would call a fit since they were simple, elegant fits! Whereas the ones you called fits were what a lot of people would call influencer style, i.e. no one would walk out on the street like that unless it's a special occasion or if these were influencers creating content.

    • @icedcat4021
      @icedcat4021 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I mean, yeah that's the point... according to you, a white t-shirt- sneakers, and blue jeans would be the height of fashion because they're the most universal. We don't judge art based on how many people could make it, we don't judge movies based on how wide an audience they appeal to, so why should an outfit be judged based on how many people could wear it? Something being creative is what makes it a good outfit.

    I don’t think I have ever been into crazy accessories, multiple layers, super interesting textures, you know anything kinda really crazy. I think it’s fine that some influencers might feel the same way. I love matching sets, simple canvas with a pop of graphics or colours, and I like being more simple and effortless, I feel so uncomfortable and kinda like an imposter when I do too much, I love keeping it more simple and I think being able to pull off a simple style is kinda more impressive because you need to be able to create interest with more limited options

    i’d love to see you do this again! i think some good “guidelines” to decide would be are they just pretty? it’s similar to the “are they just skinny” trope… if you cover up their face and just imagine seeing someone wearing that outfit at a park or trader joe’s… would you still like it?
    another one could be “can i see someone wearing this in florida” lol

    I've never heard of most of these people, but I can see why. They wear very normal clothes, which like makes sense because I think influencers want to be relatable. But personally none of these are outfits I would feel the need to post on insta lol. The fashion people I follow on insta are all very creative and put together things I would never think of, which is why I follow them? Like I want inspiration from fashion influencers, I don't want to just see them in stuff I would throw on to run errands, you know?

    Before I even clicked on this my first thought was Emma Chamberlain. No hate towards her, as she is very talented in many other ways, but I do believe she’s the definition of skinny conventionally attractive person not doing much in terms of fashion--which is something I believe she’s expressed many times. If I remember correctly she said she just likes to be comfortable and just throw “whatever” on and doesn’t really consider herself to be a fashion girly. What I think we can say is that the clothes seem to fit her well and it doesn’t look like she’s trying super hard to be something she’s not, which is commendable!

    I mean, I also love bestdressed Ashley's fashion but it's way too unrealistic for someone who's not living in Manhattan and is a regular everyday person
    if you go back to her videos, when she used to go to college her outfits weren't that extra, and even in NY when she said she was running errands, she'd basically wear a cute blouse with jeans and converses, which is far more relatable but doesn't appeal as much on the feed, so her posts are way more fancy now (I mean, maybe this is her day to day style nowadays, who knows)
    I just don't think I could ever go out to get the bus to university in my city wearing a puffy sleeved dress that basically shows the bottom of my ass, and that's why I prefer Emma's style, cuz it's way more chill, confortable and achievable

    It's interesting what your perspective on 'is it an outfit or is it an influencer' is, cause within India, it's quite a reverse phenomenon. Influencers here can get away with wearing outrageous clothes that people would not wear on the street cause it would not be socially acceptable, just cause they are influencers and the privilege allows them to get inside a car and go from point A to point B without having to step out on the streets.

    personally, a lot of the outfits that you said were "just an influencer" were great outfits to me. i think i'm a lot more about the details and matching colors and minimalism. i don't follow any of these people so i don't think i'm being "influenced", it's just my style. but i do think photos do a lot. if i saw these outfits on someone outside, i probably wouldn't notice them as well as on these photos that were taken to showcase the outfits. and also a big part of these outfits is the hair. if emma chamberlain didn't have my favorite hairstyle, that sharp wavy bob, the outfits wouldn't look the same.
    i feel like you were a little bit too harsh about the paris outfit :')
    i also agree with one comment i saw over here - that influencers can get away with more "out there" stuff than regular people and i'd rate the outfits the opposite. a lot of outfits influencers wear just aren't realistic.

    It helps me to ask "would this look good on a different body type or in a different social setting." this can be faulty, of course, because some pieces of clothing are more harmonious on people with specific proportions. For example, I will forever be jealous of the way that fishnets look on girls with thicker thighs than me. Same with tank tops and bigger biceps. And also excluding formal wear and seasonal. But it helps when I look at some of the trends coming out of tiktok and fashion runway, that are kind of bizarre outfits but are chic on thin white bodies

    I've been loving your styling and videos Laini, thank you so much for making them!!!
    For more influencers, I do sporadically follow Hollie Mercedes (not exactly my style but I like that she lives in Amsterdam, I'm dutch myself hehe), Elliqa (also dutch, I used to love her style a lot but I'm not that into minimalist street/sportswear anymore) Fanny Ekstrand (but her style is veering more into "I can afford expensive stuff" territory for me lately which is sad because she was one of the first people I followed on ancient fashion blogs. she influenced me to get samba's years ago, she wore them with oversized suits, so gooood. happy they're back or still on trend haha but they will forever be a classic), ah and sisters Accidentalinfluencer and (especially) Double3xposure (Reese and Molly Blutstein) have really good style.
    My top style fav has been Jenny from Wearilive for years though, I'm full on track shorts and cute button ups and vintage knits, I've noticed I really really like mixing weird "genre's" of clothing together. For "celebrity style" I'm all in love with Zoe Kravitz, although I really am not impressed by stuff like "basic 500 dollar cap from the row"... but her styling in high fidelity is top tier and I love it so much

    I think ppl tend to forget that real life is very different from the online world were everything seems overly popular or basic. Especially here in normal cities in the USA if someone where to dress like Maltida in that very all black or all neutral Scandinavian style they would definitely be seem as stylish or even over dressed. Most ppl in USA don’t wear lots of black or Scandinavian style outfits-it’s like this overly casual athletic style that’s everyday in most USA cities. So ppl like Matilda ‘s style are extremely wearable but super stylish depending on where you are from. In Scandinavia ( where she’s from ) that style is considered normal/basic.

    My favorite fashion influencer is Danielle Bernstein , very New York chic with a touch of western meets Bridgeton milkmaid style. Amanda Steele is another one that I really like. She has the cool girl fits... she does a lot of black very goth chic and also the classic party girl scene looks. Lastly Aimee Song , she has the classic L.A girl chic with a lot of neutrals but she also like to add shoes and bag that add a pop of color to the fit.

  • @BelWatson
    @BelWatson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I didn’t know any of them but the best dressed one was the only one that surprised me and who I loved every fit. The cowboy boots for me ruin everything. I think a lot of them looked good because they are skinny. Not even an influencer but just tall, white and skinny.
    You should consider doing a similar style but with different body type influencers. Bigger bodies, black bodies, Latin bodies, etc. it would be so much more interesting.

  • @beccagorham10
    @beccagorham10 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    We agreed on bestdressed, like every time i see her its like "thats a fit", but i think its because she wears more like what i would call "fashion" over what i would call "trendy". In my opinion a fit is when its fashionable rather than an influencer just wearing trends, which is what the others were doing imo. Like they still looked cute, but they were just trendy rather than putting together like a good outfit ahah

    I started paying attention to fashion in my late teens. Before that I used to wear the most basic of outfits like a t-shirt and jean shorts or a plain uninteresting dress. So whenever I see someone wearing those kinds of simple pieces without doing anything interesting with them, I assume they're just not into clothes.
