i think a huge “trick” to having your own style and your own flavor in outfits is to BUY LESS. when you’re not buying entire outfits and only the specific pieces that will work with the clothes you ready have, it’s easier to make your outfits look like YOU and not like everyone else.
THIS! I'm always trying to find pieces that I know I can imagine different outfits with the stuff I already own! It's helped me narrow down pieces that may just be trendy~
true! i remember that laini also said in another video or an instagram reel, that it can help to include one piece of clothing or accessory to the outfit that isn't super trendy at the moment, because if everything you wear is suuuper trendy it can look like the outfit is from a catalogue rather than like your personal style. and if you buy more and just keep adding new stuff to your wardrobe i think it can definitely have the same effect, as most stuff people buy new is stuff that is trending at that moment. also i think it can encourage creativity if you have to work with what you already have because you sometimes have to think outside the box and it forces you to try new combinations that you might have never considered before. i found a lot of my absolute favorite outfits that way!
That whole notion that something that was trendy last year suddenly isn‘t anymore and is actually to be mocked (I don’t mean you of course) is so ridiculous and I don‘t think it exists outside of Tiktok. Most people don‘t scrutinize a stranger‘s outfit like that. If you were to step out with a shacket, leggings and boots in my city you would look perfectly fashionable to most. Especially since almost everyone I know can‘t afford a whole new wardrobe every year. The reason people hate their outfits is BECAUSE of these TikToks. I really like your fresh takes on the trends and your tips though!
exactly! i live in a big city in germany and many young people, maybe even the majority still dress like this, i even see a lot of teenagers wearing skinny jeans and other things that tiktok considers cheugy. of course there are also some people that dress super trendy, but it's not like every 16 year old looks like a gen-z influencer. i can't imagine that it's that much different in america, at least in cities that are not new york or something like that.
I honestly feel like a lot of these trends just exist on TikTok but are completely impractical in real life. I'm not an influencer I go to work I can't wear a Mini skirt and I'm not going to spend money when I have actual bills. A fishnet crochet style top that see through is not on the top 10 things I need in life.
I’m pretty sure Laini has said in the past that different things will be “timeless” for different people and the shacket totally applies for me. I’ve been rocking a denim shacket since 2017 because regular boxy denim jackets looked weird on me back when those were so trendy. (I prefer a shacket that has a normal curved shirt hem rather than squared off). My philosophy is that if I like a trend, I’ll get something adjacent to it that is more my style so that I’m not sick of it when the trend goes by.
This reminds me of your video where you didn’t use Instagram for like a month. The online fashion community can overwhelm you with pieces you never even see in your real day-to-day life. I still wear skinny jeans bc I already had them, and I love how I dress! Thank you for this video, now I have more to think about.
Your point around seeing things a lot in person vs online is really interesting. I think we can get into a space on social media where we surround ourselves with somewhat similar people so it makes it seem like everyone has a certain item where in real like no one really has it. I live in NYC so it’s also interesting bc every aesthetic imaginable is represented and therefore nothing is too overdone but also everything is haha
I live in a moderate sized town in the south. It's funny because at my art high school, people moderately follow trends, such as baggy jeans, black converse, etc. Then when I go out in public, it's just leggings or skinny jeans+a baggy shirt everywhere. Like I watch videos talking about how stuff is super super trendy and I'm like, is it? Or is it only accessible online?
Laini has made me realized i don’t have to fit into any aesthetic or even have to follow any trends. I love laini because she made me realize about how important its for a person to be authentic and see your own style. 💗 Thank u lainiiii
I swear to god, you’ve come up with the best fashion commentary videos during your pregnancy! I feel like it’s definitely made you more creative. pls continue making these types of videos postpartum-they make your channel so unique
you should totally stream you making these outfits! I dont think streams have to be 100% totally riveting all the time because I personally have a stream open while I have something else open in another tab. Chill streams are my fav. And then if you did do a stream, you can get instant feedback or ideas on what items we want you to style. It’d be more like a live hangout than a traditional video if that makes sense. There’s so many cool things you could do with a stream and it would really set you apart because I can’t think of any fashion youtubers that stream♥️
I find that most trends are built off of classic pieces - loafers, blazers, puffer jackets etc. are always in, but the shape/colour/styling can change and make it "trending" or not. If you wear the item in the context it would be worn in then it looks a lot more "timeless" e.g. blazers with a business casual outfit looks less outdated than a blazer over a unitard/biker shorts
I bought a lot of trends last year and now I hate everything. I watched your “clothing items you don’t need in your wardrobe” video and bought a lot less for this years fall/ winter. Your videos are just very helpful. Thank you for that🫶🏼🫶🏼
I'd love to see you make a series for styling basics different ways like overalls, button ups, leather jackets, midi skirts, even jeans etc. since you have so many clothes and an AMAZING fashion sense!! Also this might help people to work with the clothes they have and promotes sustainable fashion💕(Lmk what you think!) Love the vid as always xx
Over a year ago I was looking for the perfect pair of loafers and was pleased when I saw a recommendation from Sam Hine for the classic bass weejun penny loafer. I opted to buy those instead of a trendier platform version and I’m so glad I did because not only are they easy to slip on with most outfits, but also literally everyone likes them! From my friends to my grandma people love that classic penny loafer silhouette more than they might think they would.
for skinny jeans - i would do black ones with like a crazy leather jacket and docs etc and make them OTT punk like they originally were back in the 70s
I LOVE the shacket and I still have my 2016 green jacket (which just so happens to be shacket-shaped). I love them because they layer so easily, they're less stuffy than a blazer, and I really don't live somewhere that I need a REAL winter coat. Shackets go well with MY personal style, which is mostly earthy and laid back (I would describe myself as GORP with jeans), so I love having them around, and usually go with neutral jacket (personally!) so that I can wear a variety of cuts, patterns, materials, and textures under it and change the look every time I wear it I, personally (again!), would never buy a pea coat or a puffer because I don't have a classic or sporty style and I would consider myself purchasing those items to be a trend in MY closet that I would get tired of because they don't mesh as well into my personal style
another reason i dont really like trends once they blow up, is that all you see is the kinds from shein or even h&m, which even through the picture i can sense the pieces are just cheaply designed, made from cheap materials, produced in sweat shops, styled and shot in a very straight-forward/approachable but ultimately disengaging way. you can show me a picture of almost exactly the same outfit, for example a blouse and sweatervest and boots, but in a vogue magazine, and i will probably like it so much more than any pic on instagram, because i can tell the quality of the garments, the designers, the sewers, the stylists, and even the models. which is why thrifting is so important for style, because for the same price you get better materials and more unique style in almost the same garments, and if you develop the styling skills that laini protrays in this video, you can style it differently over the years, so you dont get bored of it, but still are able to appreciate the way you styled it before.
This was so fun to watch! So cool seeing your thought process while putting an outfit together. Would love to see another video like this but like maybe you shopping and putting outfits together for different occasions like going to a coffee shop, nice dinner with friends etc.
Hii laini, I love to see you search the pieces in there videos. In general, these sit down and combining outfit videos are nice. Love your work and your takes on fashion
Your video’s keep popping up so I keep watching them. I really like how you promote and show people how to follow their own style and not just trends. I also like how you promote thrift stores.
love this video! i think its fun seeing you style stuff from online, i struggle with being able to pair pieces together without actually seeing them irl so this is good inspo
Your content is so refreshing. I love the outfit building and talking through the outfit “builds” - a different take than the classic haul video. Love that you also mix high and low and approach things with a more long-term mindset for how to wear things that are or aren’t trendy
Love this format! Would absolutely watch more! I appreciate how you encourage your viewers to think for themselves, it is very freeing in a world (online fashion) that often feels otherwise!
Laini your pregnancy glow!!! I was so mesmerized by ur skin and makeup when u were speaking in the intro I had to rewind to actually listen to what you said🥹 also love this vid concept
omg can you please make this a series?? i have that exact sweater vest and love this concept of re-styling 'out of trend' pieces to make them a bit more long-lasting!!! such a genius idea :-)
Hi Laini! Just wanted to say that you are one of the sweetest people on TH-cam. I discovered you back in spring and you just inspire me so much. We are very close in age and it’s hard to find people our age with realistic outfits that are cute and practical, not just for pics! Your fashion perspective is insane and I am sure your daughter will be the same icon as you🥰Good luck with the baby, I screamed when you guys revealed the pregnancy on instagram!!❤️
i watch your videos bc i like your way of thinking, we dont even have the same style and ive never been a trendy person. i have never owned any of the trendy pieces you talk about in any of your videos. i dont get new clothes often and thats bc even growing up, the only times we've ever gotten new clothes was for the new school year, christmas and MAYBE something for the warmer weather days. like so far this year, i only bought 7 pieces of clothing and was given 9 pieces from an old person
i actually kinda liked the black gingham pants with the shacket! maybe with some orange sambas that'd look cool. a lot, but cool. and an orange scarf too. only like a quarter thru the video and loving it!
It’s like you are in my brain!! I was just looking at my closet the other day and I was saying how I want to thrift more basics and statement pieces because I hate all of the outfits I’ve wore recently or in the past 😭 this helped so much thank you! 🔥🥰
I’ve had the same boxy crop puffer coat from unif since 2016, and must say I’ve always looked cool. Jkjjkjk, but I do love how you’ve styled the puffer here! Also these are my favorite sort of videos you do🤌
I just love the idea of this video. I'm not a super regular viewer on your channel, but I do really love and appreciate that you're creating fashion content that's a bit different from typical fashion YT.
This is such an important kind of video to make - tiktok has a really petty and blasé culture of hating on things like the garments that you styled that probably makes people quicker to discard them and buy new again. But I like that the approach you took was showing how things can be restyled rather than shaming anyone for buying into a trend or hating on a trend. great
I don't hate, I love them. I have always had a great style sense. Clothes I used to wear in the past are way better than today. I had a seamstress and would design my clothes.
The plaid shacket is a Canadian classic for outdoorsy types and construction workers. I like that you went more masculine. I love the fishing/back country aesthetic. Here’s my bfs classic fit: Shacket, graphic/branded hoodie, jeans/joggers, timberlands I would do yours with a cropped graphic tee and platform sneakers. I love the FP pants!
love this video concept!! video idea suggestion: viewers send an item in their closet they love but don't know how to style and you style it in canva like this video?
laini, you have really perfected the perfect eyeliner shape for your eyes🤩 it is always so stunning yet understated and i stare at it throughout your videos LOL
Hey Laini great content as usual. I like both versions. You shopping with us and sometimes shooting with the actual items. Thank you for showing us that we can incorporate the item even when its no longer trendy just by styling it different ❤
You are on another level with your videos lately! I am always so excited to hear your takes, you are truly so brillient with fashion and have become a huge influence on me. Seeing your growth makes me so happy , no one is doing it like you right now
It's so different IRL.. Where i live if you're seen sporting something "tiktok fashion" e.g ripped up + super layered clothing aesthetic YOU WILL GET WEIRD LOOKS 🤣😭
LOVED THIS because it shows you how to style things you probably already have and helps you get the most wear out of something. Make us stop consuming! Laini you’re awesome! Do it again!!! 🥰😂
It would be cool to see outfits put together from past seasons. I feel some past seasons pieces can still look good even today just depends how it’s styled.
love this format! I also like when you have the outfits and style them in real life, but this way you can be mre creative because your not limited to the things you own. Also maybe more sustainable on the long term because you don't feel like you have to buy new clothes to make content for youtube? Anyway, love it :D
I’ve really have been enjoying these types of videos and seeing where you go for ideas! I do like seeing you search for the clothing! And yes another amazing Laini video!! 💗💗💗
frankly i love the shacket (dont have one, but it looks cute), what's ugly about it? it's a boxy, shorter trenchcoat with a flannel pattern with sometimes a cool texture..
I would style skinny jeans with moon boots or camel 311. I’m not fan of skinny jeans anymore but skinny jeans are easier to wear with boots than baggy jeans because they fit under the boots right?
Thank you for including the TikTok sound because I don't have TikTok or insta and I don't keep up with trends so I had no idea what you were talking about at first
I couldn't help but notice the horse in the trucker hat dream hehehe Thank you for making videos even when the baby is about to come our way, Laini, you are the best, always

This whole stupid notion existed long before tiktok...

Yeah, I've literally had this gray denim jacket since 2010.

Couldn't have said it any better myself :)
Idk if it’s the pregnancy hormones giving you big brain cause your latest videos are just giving all the best ideas 💥✨
Baby is brainstorming videos inside me for sure
You should do a video of trends you ACTUALLY see in public vs. trends you only see on social media
Oooo love this idea
I swear to god, you’ve come up with the best fashion commentary videos during your pregnancy! I feel like it’s definitely made you more creative. pls continue making these types of videos postpartum-they make your channel so unique

Right!! I would love to see other people's ideas and suggestions and Laini's thoughts on them!
YESSS I would love a steam for the same reason, it would be so fun to request pieces and talk about it as it happens !
I agree! This video stands out from the other clothing videos I watch.
laini you r so hard on your self here. you were actually super sharp and fast. your process is valuable. i need like an hour long video.
I find that most trends are built off of classic pieces - loafers, blazers, puffer jackets etc. are always in, but the shape/colour/styling can change and make it "trending" or not. laini's little girl will be a genius and i am pretty sure these recent videos are because of two brains working on inherent love for fashion and style
I bought a lot of trends last year and now I hate everything. I watched your “clothing items you don’t need in your wardrobe” video and bought a lot less for this years fall/ winter. Your videos are just very helpful. Thank you for that🫶🏼🫶🏼
I could recommend you to upsycle the pieces if your 'inspo board' has similar components!
I'd love to see you make a series for styling basics different ways like overalls, button ups, leather jackets, midi skirts, even jeans etc. since you have so many clothes and an AMAZING fashion sense!! Bass Weejuns are EVERYTHING!! 😩🙏🏻
I like hearing your thought process but having the outfits premade would save a lot of time to show more outfits in the video!

i love this vid but side note spying on ur notes and seeing “dreams” and then “horse with trucker hat…” killed me
I actually can't get over how freaking stunning you look in this video!!!
that eyeliner is sharrrrpppp
i have absolutely hated puffer jackets since high school and that second outfit just changed my whole perspective like i wanna recreate and style now
omg can you please make this a series?? i have that exact sweater vest and love this concept of re-styling 'out of trend' pieces to make them a bit more long-lasting!!! such a genius idea :-)
lots more of this type of video please! it's so helpful sometimes i just get mental block on how to style things

i love this style of video! it’s so fun and inspiring to see your thought process behind things

you could totally knit the striped scarf you included!
I still have my cropped puffer jacket with that trendy wavy pattern and I like it! ❤
awk- literally just bought a shacket and i'm obsessed
i love the online styling videos!! feels like i’m online shopping with my friend.🥰
The plaid shacket is a Canadian classic for outdoorsy types and construction workers. I like that you went more masculine. I love the fishing/back country aesthetic.
Here’s my bfs classic fit:
Shacket, graphic/branded hoodie, jeans/joggers, timberlands
I would do yours with a cropped graphic tee and platform sneakers. I love the FP pants!
love this video concept!! video idea suggestion: viewers send an item in their closet they love but don't know how to style and you style it in canva like this video?
I love hearing your commentary and reasoning for styling. Would love more videos like this. ❤
i literally LOVE this video format! your videos lately have been so so good and fun to watch
laini, you have really perfected the perfect eyeliner shape for your eyes🤩 it is always so stunning yet understated and i stare at it throughout your videos LOL
7:22 her getting excited about those pants is 100% me
I also love those loafers! Been thinking of getting a pair 🫶
Hey Laini great content as usual. I like both versions. You shopping with us and sometimes shooting with the actual items. Thank you for showing us that we can incorporate the item even when its no longer trendy just by styling it different ❤
I could literally watch a thousand of these videos haha. So great to see you style stuff!
I loved this video Laini! It def gave me a different perspective on certain trends on how to style other clothes! 💓
you look so good omg!
Ur videos make me excited about the clothes I already own… that’s how I know ur the one
Laini babygirl you need to chiillllll, you're feeding us with the quality content 2 days in a row💘💘
Your most recent videos have been critical, well thought out, and just *hitting* the mark…idk what’s up but ur killin it girlie 😌
You are on another level with your videos lately! I am always so excited to hear your takes, you are truly so brillient with fashion and have become a huge influence on me. Seeing your growth makes me so happy , no one is doing it like you right now
My fav outfit was definitely the second one, I'd actually love to wear it!
It's so different IRL.. Where i live if you're seen sporting something "tiktok fashion" e.g ripped up + super layered clothing aesthetic YOU WILL GET WEIRD LOOKS 🤣😭
Such a good video laini! I struggle a lot with really not liking my outfits from previous seasons. Thank you for the tips!
LOVED THIS because it shows you how to style things you probably already have and helps you get the most wear out of something. Make us stop consuming! Laini you’re awesome! Do it again!!! 🥰😂
I think I actually couldn't care less if I don't like my outfits in the future. Isn't it all about how you feel in the moment you wear it?
Still like your video tho!
Its just a little clickbait-y title hehe, I more-so just mean how to re-wear “old” or “out-of-style” pieces!
This mentality is the issue with fast fashion though
It would be cool to see outfits put together from past seasons. I feel some past seasons pieces can still look good even today just depends how it’s styled.
I prefer the pinterest otutfits and they look more timeless than trendy
You're glowing, beauty ✨
love this format! I also like when you have the outfits and style them in real life, but this way you can be mre creative because your not limited to the things you own. Also maybe more sustainable on the long term because you don't feel like you have to buy new clothes to make content for youtube? Anyway, love it :D
I liked this idea and execution. Yay new looks to explore!
Girl you are GLOWING in this video, you look so good!
I’ve really have been enjoying these types of videos and seeing where you go for ideas! I do like seeing you search for the clothing! And yes another amazing Laini video!! 💗💗💗
most of the videos under that sound on tiktok are *trendy thing* “yes” *thing that was popular a year ago* “i hate this”
frankly i love the shacket (dont have one, but it looks cute), what's ugly about it? it's a boxy, shorter trenchcoat with a flannel pattern with sometimes a cool texture..
