There is a salutatory tale in the story that he (and all Tory back benchers) never read the EU-UK WA before ratifying it in the Commons.
Johnson knew what was in it showed up his lies - particularly over NI and the NIP - and so he did not want his backbenchers to have time to debate so he got Rees-Mogg as Leader of the House to schedule a mere two hours of process for all three readings. Johnson told the backbench (never the brightest) to trust him it was a fantastic deal.
So it was ratified in record time to brays of delight from the likes of IDS.
Later on when the rubber hit the road over implementing the NIP and it dawned on IDS that yes there is an Irish Sea Border and indeed that was a matter of implement it or face pariah status and with a halt to relations between the UK and EU and UK and US.
They then started moaning that they never got time to debate the WA but instead of admitting it was their fault they blamed everyone else - Remainers, civil servants, the Speaker even the EU

@platexproductions lol, a national economy is not a household, there is no proverbial credit card. BoE interest rates were at a multi century low post 2008. Financial markets were willing to finance increased borrowing just as they did during Covid 2020. Public spending, is income and especially in a deep recession when businesses withdraw from spending the state is the only one left. The U.S., where the financial crisis began, spent more and had a faster recovery post 2008 similar to China and many other large economies. If countries had taken your advice in 2009, there would have been a depression a la 1930s.
