Winning a war is more about degrading the other sides equipment and personnel than defending territory. Lost territory can be regained. Lost lives (and even lost equipment) cannot.

Absolutely right. Standing to the bitter end and losing people and material is just a fast way to lose. The Ukrainians are playing a smart game of holding long and hard enough to cause the Russians huge losses, while minimising their own losses

Amen, it took Ruzzia 26 months to gain 15 km of territory and a small city of only 14,000 people pre-war at the cost of a minimum of 40,000 Ruzzian dead and upwards of 100,000+ wounded. For 15 kilometers. For a town the size of only 14,000 people. Tim calling this a defeat because Ukraine is using modern tactics of dynamic defense either, well, it exposes at the very least a woeful, almost willful, ignorance, or a insincerity, in the way he framed something that can only be considered a wild Ruzzian Pyrrhic defeat, and a wild Ukrainian victory. Ruzzia suffered just horrendous losses for a rather insignificant town and less than 0.6% of Ukrainian territory. I could even watch any more of what this dullard had to say after such a ignorant comment that for me destroyed any credibility despite his obvious sympathies and loyalties. Those kind of defeatist positions that overplay Ruzzian success only hurts the chances of Western aid, who are notorious in general of wanting to back a winner, the ultimate in band wagon jumpers. It's not innocent, and it's not harmless by mis-framing what's actually going on on the frontlines. I couldn't agree with your comment more!!!

I was thinking the same thing too. It is like he can't understand why Ukraine is doing it. This is not WW1, when you could entrench yourself in and keep holding the position. Any large gathering of people will get an artillery call upon, any fortification will get bombed by a gliding bomb. The moment Russia want a place to be taken, they will take it by the meat waves and bombs and that is being shown throughout the whole conflict.
And then he talks that Ukraine would not benefit at all for having long range weapons permissions. What about massive weapons depots looking like mushroom clouds in the recent weeks. Those things will probably help Ukraine massively in a long run more than throwing that expensive missile at some random depot in occupied territory which will be replenished the next day.
Really hard to stop rambling when such ideas are being thrown by a "Ukraine specialist".

I don't think Vulhadar is a "big town" it's 3.5 Km². And the solid, nonflexible line is a terrible idea. Ask the germans from 1918. Russia lost something like 800 armored vehicles taking this village over 31 months and 1,000s and 1,000s of men. This approach has gained .006% of Ukrainian territory so far this year. At this rate, it will require 8 BILLION men to take all of Ukraine. Losing a tiny bit of territory is not losing a war.

And even if Russia had 8 billion men to spare it still couldn't conquer Ukraine because within a year Russia will have used up all of its stored army equipment in decent condition and Russia is quickly using up its liquid assets in its national wealth fund
plus Ukraine is gradually destroying Russian oil refineries.
Plus, it took over two years for Russia to capture Vuhledar so to capture all of Ukraine at that rate would take many thousands if not millions of years and Russia is facing demographic collapse so by the end of this century might have only half as many men as it does now.
As well, for every man who is ordered to join the army in a mass mobilization two other Russian men flee the country so Russia would need to have an additional 16 billion men to make up for all the men who would flee Russia if 8 billion men were mobilized.

At this point losing one village here or there doesn't matter any longer. What matters for Ukraine is to hold on and keep putting Russia under pressure until the Russian economy collapses completely. To that end, the attack in the Kursk region plays an incredibly important role, because it increases wildly both the casualties and the logistic burden on the Russian side. It is of paramount importance that the Russians DO NOT obtain any kind of ceasefire, which would undoubtedly work in their favour by letting them breathe and give them time to recover.
Also, we're always talking about the Kremlin's red lines, but I find it rather bizarre that nobody mentions Ukraine's red lines. For example, if it looks like the Kremlin is going to have things its way thanks to shifts in the West's support, what keeps Ukraine from using those useless long-range American weapons and shoot them at Moscow and the Kremlin in particular, at St Petersburg, at Russia's power plants and so on? We always take for granted that the Ukrainians will keep being good boys and nicely put up with rules that apply only for them and not for their invader. What if they snap and stop pulling their punches? What will the West do: stop supporting Ukraine and let Russia destroy it? It's astonishing that this possibility is never mentioned anywhere.

It's foolish to criticise Ukraine for not building concrete defence lines behind their positions. They can either spend money on such defences (a thousand + miles) or spend it on missiles, drones and armoured vehicles to smash the Russian advance and their logistics. Just sitting in concrete bunkers is daft - the Maginot line was evaded, the Atlantic Wall was smashed and the Siegfried line was pointless. I don't think any country can afford to do both, including the United States.

Dear UK, I can´t stand your attitude any longer. "The war will end up in some sort of agreement". Bec you let it happen. Put your money where your mouth is. allow Ukraine to use long range missiles to hit targets in Russia. Why would you even deliver weapons and then dictate how they use them? Thoughts and prayers and lamenting how bad and sad the war is are not helping. Don´t pretend to express sympathy whilst lamenting the situation and holding back on support. Russia is strong in hybrid warfare as well as active threats. Russian ship with chemical weapons and explosives right in front of your coast. Suicide drones dropped in NATO ally states by Russia. Also no response either from anyone. You are enabling them whilst doing the bare minimum or pretending. Lives are lost bec you let it happen. You got blood on your hands, too. Wake up.

Just as in the fight against water, concrete does not solve this problem. Concrete creates a place where force can be concentrated, and the concrete will fail. Instead, you need to put a sequence of smaller obstacles in the water's path, each one reducing the power of the water, until it has lost its force.

Trump being so close in the polls in the US goes to show that most voters are low information voters and when voters don't have information to rely on, they rely on emotion to guide their voting. The right has been selling fear for decades. 40-50 million people watched the VP debate, that still means 100+million did not watch it. Two-thirds of the people I work with don't follow politics, know very little about politics and really don't care about politics, people voting out of emotion are easily manipulated. In 2016, the border was the main issue for Trump and building a wall, immigration still hasn't been fixed but there is no mention of fixing it this time around for trump and certainly not building a wall this time. Policy doesn't matter to these people they are totally bought into the fear and emotion the right push.
