Hey guys!! Some people say taking the first step is the hardest but we were most afraid of the last step.. finishing was the hardest part on this particular job we didn't want to mess it up at the very end and waste all of our hard work. But we conquered it and now it's full steam ahead🙌🙌🙌 btw for everyone who commented on our last vid Kristen is 5'8" and maybe a half 😆😅 what's the hardest part of your job?
I started remodeling my house when I bought it about 15 years ago.. I stopped remodeling a little past the halfway point.. about 11 years ago... Guess I ought to get back to work.. I believe you have inspired me.
Finishing work is always the hardest, quadruple that for a boat! And to do all this wearing work sandals and safety squints is amazing! I’m excited for the power plant and electrical, call me a nut job, don’t care. I watch all the other sailing/boat repair channels, but GBU, is the one I look forward too. Keep up the great work and be safe!
Matt and Kristin, I completely remodeled my kitchen. New electrical, New cabinets, new quartz countertops, new solid wood flooring and new slots for new appliances. From one contractor/designer/fabricator to another, you guys are doing a great job with your boat. Can’t wait to see the finish.
We all think your determination to improve your living quarters shows your true character, I still remember in one episode where there was a hurricane coming and you are jumping in the water to check the anchor, so finishing the interior, pice of cake!
We love your videos, never miss them. We've been watching for a couple of years now, but I have to let you know something. Seriously, treat the pvc dust like its radioactive! it will not just dissolve like wood dust in your lungs. It will fill up the little areas in your lungs and you may not even notice it until you try diving one day and cannot get enough air. You don't want to be dragging an oxygen bottle around the deck someday. Keep up the videos. You're doing great with the boat too.
Hi guys and gals, doing this will build alot of character for you both, and last a lifetime. Now, just as T. Micheal Rearic said, please treat the dust as bad stuff. Buy 1 or two extra hoses for the vaccum and have it expell air outside the vessel, and have Kristen vaccum with the nozzel as you cut or sand inside. It will save alot of dust and clean up while you work. It is a pain but it helps you not have to clean up the same dust 5 times, nor have to re-breath it also. Small preventetive actions now, can have a big impact on your health later. And possibly your child's health too. If you do not belive me, read the warning labels on your fiberglass container, although you will need a magnifying glass to do so. Best wishes, it's really starting to look great, don't give up. Jonny
Guys, this is from a custom cabinetry designer and manufacturer. 50 + year old family business, 25 years of personal experience. Ok? So, I have to say my hat´s off to you guys. The only time I´ve done anything comparable to what you guys are doing to that Hunter, I´ve done it with my boat INSIDE my cabinet shop, with every possible piece of equipment , tool, and material you could possibly need for the job, including CNC equipment. NO rain, perfect 72 degree weather, no bugs and a crew that comes into the boat to clean and organize everything as soon as I come off it. You guys are doing everything in the most difficult manner, limited tools, on the water, in the tropics. Videos do not tell the whole story. Hot, muggy, cramped, working conditions. I can only imagine the inevitable arguments you two must get into , off camera. But I´ll be damned, you are doing a bang-up job. You learn as you go, screw up, stand back, re group and get back at it and succeed. Somehow, in spite of your inexperience, you are actually pulling it off. Call me impressed. Feel free to PM me anytime if you have questions or need an extra brain to help out. PURA VIDA!
Hey Guys! I have been watching you channel for a long time now and felt that I needed to comment. So I have worked in the bush in Africa as a missionary for the past 26 years. I am a qualified airplane mechanic/aircraft electrician/and all round do anything guy. Matt I would work with you any day in the bush because you are not afraid to try anything and if you are stuck you will make a plan. It may not be the most beautiful but what you do is functional and you save money doing it. Anyone who can grow such a great moustache is good in my books. Kristen I love the wat you support your man, in this cool rebuild.
And Matt, Screw the haters.. The main reason I watch your channel is because you're doing things out of your wheelhouse, and on the cheap. Too many other channels start making money, and paying people to do things for them, or buying things that cost more than their original boat!
Goodness gracious. This is starting to seem like the never ending project. I admire your patience. I bet it will look awesome when you are done. And saved a TON of money. Good on you.
Hello Kristen and Matt,I have watched your channel from the start, and as a retired marine engineer who worked and sailed in ships for over 40 years I love a good project so I think I will be watching your inventive and entertaining videos for quite some time to come..Thank you both, cheers.Roly 🇬🇧.
Matt, great job! But if you are left handed, get left handed scissors. That will help keep you from tearing up the laminate when you are cutting it. And remember, the last 10% of any job takes 90% of the time
Long time viewer. Matt, I'm quite impressed by the quality of work you are doing considering the conditions you work under and the tools you have to work with. No table saw, no sliding miter saw, no bandsaw, no router table, no drill press... etc... but best of all, NO FEAR, in tackling something you've never done before. And gotta love Kristen's upbeat cheer!
Matt, My father was a master carpenter, cabinet maker, and custom home builder. He owned tools you have not dreamed of and used them in his work. That said, you impress me with how much you accomplish with so few tools. My compliments.
Your channel are honestly one of the very best. There are a lot of perfect people out there, with perfect boats, doing perfect drinks and beautiful sunsets... If some day I have a boat of my own, and sit near a Caribbean island, I will surely look a lot more like you guys.
Some time ago Matt mentioned Kristen punching her hands together all the time. I can't unsee it now that Matt, yes you are now doing it. Love your style. Great job, both of you. Your followers love you. Keep going strong.
You guys are rocking it. Couple suggestions: Find a good weighted roller go over all of your formica pieces once you glue them down. Also, there are trim bits you can buy for your router. This will help you going forward. You can cut a piece big by just a bit....then trim it flush once it's glued down.
Matty The Baddy OG! Razor Sharp! Best thing about your rebuild isn’t the $$$$. It’s that you and your wife re-engineered your vessel and when something goes wrong you know everything on your boat. Outstanding GBU!
Also regarding sanding the mica edges, you can take a piece of scrape wood 10" by 3 1/2" contact bond what ever grit sand paper you are using to the piece of wood all the way around. This way you have the 3 1/2 flat side for large long runs back and forth and the short (wood thickness) for the tight corners and hard to get to places. 40yrs custom kitchen cabinet makers have all the tricks! good job, it's starting to come around!! cheers!!
You need to laminate both sides of the cabinet doors or they will warp. Make templates with paper or cardboard. Use masking tape around the outside to fit perfect. Keep it up. Laminated for 30 years.
That's some nice finishing work! This comment coming from a guy that ran his own finishing business for 12 or more years. What really impresses me is that you are doing it with 'limited' tools, not a full shop like I had at my disposal. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Matt nobody should be calling you an idiot, you’re making everything very functionable, and easy access because you know what’s coming, you guys are doing a great job, can’t wait to see it all finished
When you are all done and you get the first scratch in the new woodwork, don't scream. The work you are doing is totally for hard living and evidence of that will be an almost daily thing. But, the great work you are doing will shine through. Kudos to both of you. (I'm wearing my GBU t-shirt!). Smile....
I really admire Kristen . She has so much confidence in you Matt . My wife always tells me to hire someone to do a project around the house , even when I know I can do it myself . At the end of it all , you guys are knocking it out of the park . You should use some white caulk to cover the gaps . They sell mold resistant caulk for bathrooms that I think would work great . I love watching you two work together so well . Great Job !
I've done a little cabinet work in the past. Currently I'm a self-employed arborist who does it all with ropes and harness, no bucket truck. I'd rather be trimming/removing 6' diameter 140' tall trees over a house and a power line than doing cabinet work. Ya'll are doing awesome, keep up the good work, it looks great. Table router was a nice piece of gbu diy. Look forward to meeting ya'll in person someday if I get out there on the ocean in 2023.
This boat renovation is perfectly designed for television. It's a daytime soap opera. Tune in next week to see if Matt cuts his finger off. Don't worry about what people say, as long as they're talking, you're winning!
Hi Guys I'm an engineer and former carpentry professional. Your work is not conventional but, I'm impressed. I think your creativity is fantastic. Your solutions for dealing with a refit on a tight budget and lack of materials are commendable. Don't pay attention to the haters.
WOW that curved edge for the recessed lighting looked really100%. The router jig table is totally ghetto genius. There is always a million small steps in finishing. Your off to a great start/finish!
Hey Guys. I been watching you guys for a couple years now. I especially like the one when you guys sailed from Florida and got lost in Cuba. I spent half of my life on sailboats, cruisers and a number of commercial vessels. I am a archaeologist but still love the boating scene. I can tell you from years of experience you must have your boat to function practically. I support your restoration and making things that function to suit your needs. I can recall one time when we had a wire bundle on fire and couldn't get to it because it was buried under and all through some crap. We started ripping things out the boat to get to it and put the fire out before it spread through out the entire boat. I think one must have access to every component in an emergency on blue water. It looks great and I cant wait to see the finish product. Hope you get sailing soon and be awear of the upcoming hurricane season. Stay safe. Really enjoy the videos.
Coming along great guys. One piece at a time; as long as you're happy with it; you'll look forward to the next phase. If you use stainless steel rods you can adjust and set the glued laminate sheet right on your work then remove each SS rod and your glued pieces will be aligned once you touch the glued pieces together you almost can't get it apart to adjust. Again; the glue won't stick to the SS RODS and you pull them out one at a time and press the glued pieces together.
Rosie and I are back from our winter away in our fifth wheel. Internet is spotty where we go but now back at home I will try to catch up to some of my favorite you tube sites. Love watching you two work away. Stay safe and healthy. Burlington Bill, songwriter of songs such as 66 Mustang, and Sailing to Freedom.
I give you a lot of credit for being very inventive, retired from construction home improvements I had a lot of people start working for me and didn’t know what end of a hammer to drive an nail 🛠
I used similar lights, get a few spares. The nice part is you can just pull them out any time. I'd suggest wago connectors or similar so they can be swapped easily. I've lost 2 of the two dozen that we have over the past three years.
I built 1000 square-foot guest house and a 2700 square-foot House all while being married, it’s not easy and it pains me at times to watch you guys do this. I know what you’re going through and I know it ain’t easy, but hang in there it will be worth it in the end you guys have the right attitude and mindset to get her done! You’re getting closer and closer to me and I hope to meet you before I head off to Trinidad this year during hurricane season. You guys are great and I’m hoping that I’ve got at least part of your back!!! !
Just to make you feel good Matt I think the majority of us admire the fact there is not any project on that boat your are not afraid to try! KUDOS man!!!!! I would be like um NO WAY......you go right at it. Stones Brother!
Matt, never say “stupid”, Kristen and you have done gre8, work. I must say your skills are far superior than most DIY’s. Keep it up!! The best part after a hard day of work is, sipping on a beer and sitting on that pier and watch the sun goes down… To you and Kristen that old saying “Bravo Zulu”.
15:13 JACKASSES!! Keyboard tough-guys!!! I’m personally enjoying your videos, started from scratch and here I am 12/23/22 on this particular video. Great job guys!!!
Thanks for having Bear in the video, he looks great! I'm totally impressed with the contraption you came up with to cut the strips, that was brilliant. Things are starting to come together even though you still have a ton of "finishing" to do, you're both so dedicated to having it look good and functioning well for your needs, I've no doubt you'll be proud of what you've accomplished. Also loving the stache! Gotta love a man with a good healthy looking mustache, I'm a sucker for them. ♥♥♥
Hi guys I'm a pandemic listener and promise to continue long after. I am also a soon to be retired journeyman carpenter/ homebuilder and does some of your techniques leave a lot to be desired...sure but this is not the intention of this comment. That being said, it's a little known fact that one of the leading causes of divorce in our country is going through a remodel. Whether that pertains to remodeling a boat im not sure but anything a couple do together can be stressful to a relationship. Whenever we are having a disagreements it's so easy to just say screw it and give up! You guys are a beautiful couple and my unsolicited advice to you is to look at everything you are doing to the boat is equal to making improvements to your relationship and giving it a strong foundation which is WAY more important than anything that you're doing to the boat. I wish you guys all the best and I will be seeing you in the near future D.
Finishing is the exciting part. You are doing one fine job with your limited toolset you are both inventive enough to make it work. It makes me smile when I see safety glasses used when you cut. Yes, I'm safety Steve. Keep up the fantastic work. The Love palace is almost done. Cheers
Wait a minute! I wonder how many people out there that are making ugly comments have done an extensive refit on a sailboat? Just as I thought, lots of talk for little walk. Carry on Matt, you are doing a fine job. I'm working on my sailboat and know 1st hand how difficult this work can be. On the job training is tough but rewarding. Bless you both for keeping your shoulder to the wheel & sharing your content with others. ♡
You're doing a great job Matt, don't let the critics get you down, you're working with limited tools and limited space, yet you are just killing it..can't wait to see the results..
I'm sure that you've already done whatever you are gonna do by the time we've seen this, but the way to flush cut edge banding with with a razor blade. Push it along the face of the cabinet and flush trim the edged banding. They make a tool, but a plain blade in your hand does almost as well. In any case, you guys sure are doing a lot of next level finish work with hand tools and its coming out good. Keep up the good work!
You two complement each other brilliantly. Carry on with the woodwork you are doing a fantastic job, will look good when it’s finish. All the very best in your endeavours 😎🇬🇧
Use a heat gun to bend the Formica/plastic laminate strip. Coat the surface that it will be mounted to, then coat the underside of the plastic laminate, and wait a few minutes for it to get tacky. Use some small wood strips to keep it off the base, line it up nice then press one edge to the base, then pull a strip of wood out as you work it down. Then roll the surface to get any air bubbles out of it.
Always fun to watch your jenky build style with the Mario mustachios growing like a weed. Not much that you could do to your boat to make it look worse than it used to look. That means whatever you do, it’s all great work. Amazing skills creating tools. Just be careful with your countertop and heat. That may be the one item that won’t last. The banter between you both is so much fun to listen to. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Router table. And good job. Little tip if you glue on a full face and cut out the holes the grain will match using the cut off. A little tricky and has to be a straight cut with a thin blade without scratching the banding.
for my favorite peeps, i am retired from a cabinet/woodworking shop---you are making my skin crawl. LOL, so much easier ways of doing what you're doing. wish i was there to help you, my salary would be chilling at night having a cold beer with you.
Very impressive with all the skills that you both have developed during the refit-especially impressed with Matts table saw to cut the laminate. It's all looking great and finishing is always the most difficult as the smallest imperfection seems to be obvious but only because you know where to look, no one else even notices. I have one thing I would comment on and that is the ring of bolts hanging through the deckhead around the mast, I would shorten them and put blind dome nuts on the ends for safety. Keep up the great work as it is all coming together and you will be proud of it
One of the best videos yet! Keep it up guys. Next time someone tries to tell you how good they are, ask for pictures of their builds. Mat you're winning all the way around, building a boat your way and have a beautiful girl to help........killing it!
Hi from Phoenix AZ. You guys are funny !! You make me 😊. I am from PR . I love that you are refitting the sail boat at PR. Don’t pay attention to the hateful people continue your amazing refit. I love it !!
You guys are good people, I am Nelson my Wife is Maureen. We ha ve a Villa , it’s close to Cabo Rojo , always welcome to hang out with us , on the house .
Matt things are coming out great ! Looked at myself as a decent woodworker but some of the things you do are fantastic ! Don't let anyone tell you different !
Your good looks and intelligence are only exceeded by your humility. My husband has those same assets or so he says. Good thing you two don’t get together on your boat project. He is an old Coastie!
You guys give this DIY scrub hope for future boat projects. I love your channel, your personality, and your outlook on life. I hope to meet you all out there sometime.
Hey Matt--forget about the haters! You two are doing great work on the boat and you're doing it YOUR way. Looking forward to seeing the final results. Happy to be a subscriber--love the channel.
Patron pictures on this finished looked great. Also the work on the bathroom sink looked great as well. I can wait to see the old girl back together and completed.
Awsome! Don't rush the projects. They are just as interesting as the sailing. Been watching you two from the begining. Overcoming dificulties is what makes your vids the best sailing videos ever!😆
This channel and vegabond are the only channels I support . Milineal falcon is one I am considering supporting them . People who actually sail are the deserving ones I feel .
You are right! You have better ideas than those big boat builders. We're sailing a 37' Pacific Seacraft Crealock that's supposed to be a "high quality build". But to access the port scupper hose, we basically have to disassemble the nav desk first. So yeah, the boat builders don't give enough thought to how the boat infrastructure is supposed to actually work.
Hi Guys!! You both are really knocking this project out!! I love the enthusiasm of both of you and remember, haters gonna be haters!! Don't be hating on my Sailing Good, Bad, and Ugly Peeps!! You both just keep on keeping on!! You are having to learn on a lot as you go and you know what!!!!, you're knocking it out of the park in my book!! I will definitely going to be asking for a personal tour and short sail tour with ya'll when you are done!! One love to you both!! Always excited each week when i find your new progress videos!!
Matt: Don’t let the haters get you down! You have it all in perspective. Keep on trucking. I am 100% sure the end product will be something you can be proud of.
I am impressed with Matt. He is one of the finest craftsmen I have seen. He brings off things with tools that I would never start. Great skills in Matt. Now Khristen is another kind of person. But no less impressive. What a team. She is competent, in other things. She gets being a woman and is a woman fully. What a great team.
I'd tip my hat to you if I only had a hat. I've been following your progress and I'm impressed! I'm not a finish carpenter or a cabinet maker or a carpenter of any kind or a rich man or a tall man... sorry, I got off track right there... You're doing such a great job is what I'm trying to say.
Matt, you are an inspiration. Your ingenuity on the fly is impressive. I assume your background is carpentry, right? You make me wanna take on projects at home. I have a 31' cruiser, doesn't need anything done to it like your Hunter. Keep up the great work and videos. Kristen, quit being so high maintenance, cut the brother some slack.
You might need a die(?) grinder or a small Dremel type battery powered one with a small 1/8 router bit. Great job. Keep building your dream! Be well you two 🥰
I love your v-birth and rant. The real beauty of building so many of your own fittings is in knowing how to easily remove them again. It would be nice to be able to transfer all that thought, energy and innovation easily to any other boats you buy in the future. Your call out to the manufacturers for your services isn't nearly as fictitious as you make it seem. Oh, at the end of any rant, I put EOR to mark End Of Rant. I'm surprised you didn't do the Formica cutting with a 8 foot plus metal straight edge and a good box cutter or other knife. Sure, with the masking tape too. My favorite parts? The shots showing both of you working side by side, by far. Every couple can learn positive lessons from watching this episode.
Matt. You are an amazing carpenter/boatbuilder. There is genius in madness. Miss Kristen, you are all out the best Jib bunny. I mean that in a good way. You do more than half the work.
Onestly it looking good. The most important is that YOU are happy with it. If you feal you can live with it and feal happy then its good. With love to you both from Sweden.
I agree ignore the haters, I love everything you are doing. I see the functionality. I want more info on the PVC board. I am in awe of what you are doing with it.
I know the refit is a must and so far, its loooookine guuud! but I sure miss ya'll sailin' around and visiting tropical paradise type places. Matt, you're a fargin genius of improv and Kristen, you kook!, I love you two's playing off of each other like ya'll do. My wife always pokes her head in here and asks me what I'm laughing at, and I just point at the screen and she sees its you two. Keep up the fantastic and truly entertaining work ya'll. I'm content to wait to see the finished product inside, and I must confess, I'm getting anxious to see the new engine go in.
Well done, you’re smart to do it this way. It’s much more difficult than most people think as it’s a boat… speaking from ( a lot of) experience. Unfortunately it never stops and it’s never ready… as it’s a boat and the sea puts a lot of stress on everything. Easy to say for others it could be better or more … whatever… I think you rock!
Years ago I did a lot of sailing in and out of San Diego bay. Never in those days did I realize the work that you and other sailing couples go through to maintain and improve your boats. Kudos to your work ethic! Enjoy watching from my recliner and sipping my chocolate milk!
Matt you are doing an awesome job! Ignore those whom criticize. You do you! We all are different with different finger prints. Why? We each have our own journey. Ignore the headen’d hearts. Thank you for sharing y’all’s journey. You two are doing incredible work. 🤗🥰
I like how you are replacing plywood with starboard. Won’t matter much in your ownership, but it’s much better in the long run, especially for that overhead trim piece.
I hope you put the laminate on the plywood in the rebirth, before the trim with the lights. You guys are awesome. Look forward to your videos every week.
An older friend of mine was watching you guys and dissing you. He is in his 70's and have been working on his boats for a good 50 plus years. in my book you guys are alright. Don't get upset with bad comments, take them as good as the good ones. Is life. 👍
Some people are jealous Matt! They wanna tear you down, but you are successful because of attitude, do or die, no defeat, their problem, they're not doing the hard work, right on? We Love you two for, keeping on and know you will be sustainable.
Love the extra video, you guys are awesome. Keep them coming.
This whole process has been awesome! Gave me some DIY pointers too. Happy for your successful undertaking ♥️.
I started remodeling my house when I bought it about 15 years ago.. I stopped remodeling a little past the halfway point.. about 11 years ago... Guess I ought to get back to work.. I believe you have inspired me.
I hope the boat doesn't sink when you guys get to sailing because otherwise these hundred videos of cutting wood would of been for nothing
Brother! The stuff you are doing is one off on the fly design. You are a friggin genius! Love you guys and your journey. Have an amazing day!!
100% agree.
Yep yep 👍

It is getting more and more beautiful. Love to see you both so busy. You inspire lots of people. Keep on doing the good job👍👍👍
Thank you, we'll keep going 🙏
Hi Guys
I'm an engineer and former carpentry professional.
Matt the lights and the v-berth trim was one of your finest moments. I love your "never say can't" attitude!
Best sailing channel - no BS with you guys!! Keep going
Hunter,
You should post the plans for that Router Table.
LOL. You two crack me up.
Thank God for Lisa. How would you ever get alone without her.
I think you are doing a smashing job based on the budget you allotted for this. It adds value and comfort to your boat that it was lacking before
Finishing is the exciting part.
You two are doing a GREAT job on refinishing the entire inside of your sailboat. 🏆 Keep up the great work and progress❤️⛵️
Hang in there guys. No hate coming from me. Love your persistence
Matt you da man and Kristen, you da best.
I don't know why anyone would insult you. You are one of the best jack-of-all-trades I have seen. You are doing a great job.
for my favorite peeps, i am retired from a cabinet/woodworking shop---you are making my skin crawl. LOL, so much easier ways of doing what you're doing. wish i was there to help you, my salary would be chilling at night having a cold beer with you.
@@genesispuredeaf2390 well KMA!!
Matt , You mentioned having access to Corian . Great product for your application . Easy to work with, looks good , durable, no trim or paint .
Jussst sit right back and youll hear a tale a tale of a fateful trip
is the sound in my head every time i see your intro
Dont change a thing you two
Very impressive with all the skills that you both have developed during the refit-especially impressed with Matts table saw to cut the laminate.
Spent a few years making laminate countertops-we used a file to cut down and dress up the end caps. Takes the 'sharp' out of the edge too.
Hell ye! One of my best friends wife is a coastie
Us too! Thanks Ryan 🙏🍻
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Be well you two 🥰
Keep on trucking dont look back...you two rock...I also diy and enjoy it....
My week would not be complete without seeing Kristen fist-thumping Matt into line. I love the progress. Well done.
Let the contact glue dry before you put your pieces in , what A great job you are going keep up the good work
I love your v-birth and rant.
U doing great Matt& Kristen. Take your time u need to do what exactly feets u both& your needs on this boat. I really enjoy this refit.
Don't stop your nice work. I'm very impress about all you make with the tools you have. That's one of the reasons i follow you !!!
Forget the haters. Y'all had a dream, took a risk, and are getting it done. Y'all are doing a great job, can't wait to see it finished.
You guys are doing for the first time. Never mind what people say, you're doing a great job.
I think you're doing a great job guys for the limited tools and also designing on a dock cheers to you I love it , it'll look great when it's all done
