    A tip from an auto body guy. Not a good idea to sand flat surfaces with fingers. Makes for an un-even grooved surface that will reveal itself when painted. Always a good idea to use a block or at least a sanding sponge.

    Great ideas for engine room access. But it would be a good idea to saturate the 2 x4’s in epoxy or they will rot pretty easy.

    • @jeffwood8109
      @jeffwood8109 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking square tube but then I realized steel bends and doesn't really bounce back whereas a 2x4 does. It still feels like too long a run for that 2x4 at least it looks too long in the video. Maybe you can have a removable support midway?

      I agree with the epoxy on the wood. It will double the lifespan. So much work to do but it won't take much time. The pin holes are important to fix . Less problems later on. I can also agree that sometimes you can't do the fine stuff but your partner can. There is so much ying and yang in boat work so keep sharing the fun (load) . See you on the water soon.

    Yes nice to see Kristen doing some carpentry etc. She is very crafty after all and that's all construction/renovations really is, just a craft. When puddying etc. use two putty knives apply and then wipe the knife clean with the other. A clean putty knife edge is the trick to smooth application and less sanding. Did she admit she doesn't trust the process? Did he admit that he needs Kristen's quality control? That's growth and the team works better. Did I see our boy working with shoes on? Oh my you's have come a long way! I'm enjoying the process, one step one cut one laugh at a time.

    Great video! GBU ROCKS and is currently the best darn channel on TH-cam. Where are the sponsors that have great equipment? Manufacturers that have supplied "tiny home" travellers in vans. How about someone step up to the plate here and make life easier and better for Matt and Kristen! They certainly deserve it. We know that GBU won't endorse junk just because it's free! Hopefully, they will endorse a great "gel" battery manufacturer and a great Solar Panel and Solar System designer/retailer. I agree with Matt, when our love is sitting beside us, we are inspired to do more and to do better. Especially if she comments negatively lol! Just remember Matt, the better your work ethics are now, the more satisfaction you will have with the results later. Luv n hugs to both. 👍🏻 🇨🇦

    Home Depot has big corrugated rubber foam floor mats that are super light for 16 bucks .You could use them to sound proof and make finishing touches on the engine room .use Stainless steel screws and washers for a finishing touch. It looks like the chrome steel corigated but rubber .

    "Irons in the fire." That's what you meant. lol. A term harkened back to Blacksmith days when a Ironsmith may have several pieces of iron heating in his forge and unable to tend to all of them at the same time. Matt, I'm a carpenter with 45 years of experience and have enjoyed your learning curve. Looks to me like you get better with every project....that's how it works. I jus started sewing for the first time ever to cover our interior cushions and I should fire myself! Only made four little ones in two days but the quality control has issues.... Got a garbage can on ones that are totally messed up. Might not have bought enough fabric! Good grief and these are supper simple slip covers. I'm a newbie at it and the quality is improving but it's slow. If I have enough fabric I want to replace everything I've done so far but for now at least their covered. March on.

    If you have clearance under the engine it is a good idea to fit a drip pan under it. Make as wide as you need and have sides about 1-2 in. high. . This will catch any drips that may occur. If you have room for insulation that would help reduce the noise. Keep up the good work.

    If you want to see how important your bulk heads and chain plates are watch SV Seeker latest video "Sailing Rig Failure at Sea". Also think about where you found the most dry rot? In most cases it looked like it was along the hull in the edge end grain of the plywood. In most of the refits I've seen they are sealing all sides and all edges with epoxy. The end grain will soak up several coats of epoxy and that stop water intrusion and rot. It's important to exceed what the manufacture has done in the number of layers of fiberglass tabbed from chainplate bulkheaded and coverage distance out onto the hull. Fully sealing all plywood with minimum 2 coats of epoxy before installing them as well as fully covering the bulkhead with fiberglass will help insure the chain plates won't pull out and rip a hole through your boat's deck.

    I wouldn't be surprised you'll want to put some sort of acoustic stuff that you can jerk out of there because wide open might mean more engine noise ? Some sort of fireproof acoustic stuff ? In houses we just fill houses with glass insulation and its quite on the other side, maybe there's a way to make a removable thing with insulation in it ? You could even steel a diesel tank from a dodge and you'd have 35 gallons. Seems like you should be carrying more diesel?

    Matt, Kristen you're doing a great job under less than ideal financial and working conditions. Hat off to you both! I don't want you to think I don't appreciate your inventiveness and creativity; I do. But I scouted around to see if there are some other sailors with similar experience, outlook and budget to yours with really cool ideas, too. They had to be simple, practical, doable ideas that make sense on a small boat. I think I've found one that may fit. Check out Free Range Sailing's TH-cam video, "Inside our Tiny Home. The 50 year old sailboat we rebuilt." According to Captain Linus of Slow Boat Sailing Channel this Australian couple's TH-cam channel is the 10th most successful. They rebuilt the whole interior of their 30 ft. yacht diy, just as you are doing. What I really liked were all of the simple yet logical upgrades of use of space, access and containment they designed after living with the original boat for several years, just like you have done. Things like expanding cabinet openings for easier access yet with sliding door panels that will not pop out no matter what, rather than hinged. Short and wide multiple stacked drop panels that provide easy ventilated access to small storage spaces without hardware. They've also tackled technology failure possibilities with simple solutions, such as by isolating the watermaker discharge into a jerry can instead of the major freshwater tanks so that if there is ever a failure and it begins to discharge raw seawater, it will only contaminate the jerry can, never the main freshwater tanks. Or by providing a drawer of dedicated bung plugs for every through hull opening. Incase there is ever a flood by a through hull beneath the waterline, he can grab the paired wooden bung and hammer and jump over the side to immediately plug the flow. Check out Free Range Sailing's TH-cam video, "Inside our Tiny Home. The 50 year old sailboat we rebuilt". I think you'll find they're simpatico.

    As a supporter on Patreon, I'm able to see photos of the new drawers in the rough. Can't wait to see how they polish up! Cabinets are TOUGH! ⛵️

    How about from reflective insulation in the engine compartment. It will make it lighter and reduce noise in the cabin. Keep up the great work. Waiting for the day is all completed and you guys enjoying it.

    Matt, you're amazing. You are doing all this carpentry work without a pocket screw hole driller-jobby doobie. Listen, I will send you mine. I bought it 3 years ago and have yet to drill and pocket one hole/screw (what-ever)

    Hope your venting of carbon monoxide is working properly after your engine install. Love you guys! I love everything you are doing to your boat. More people should venture to dyi.

    You're doing good work I'm sure it will look beautiful when you're done. I was thinking maybe your boat is going to be a bit heavier with all the new plywood and other items. Maybe you'll have to change your water line paint? Wishing you the best. ⛵

    Sailing Until Valhalla referenced the teak plug removal trick you shared, worked like a charm! They did a drip-less shaft mod you guys should look at using when the new motor goes in.
