  • In this video I share the top ten most popular fishing baits for catching Sheepshead and those that are off limits according to the laws in Florida. The best fishing baits are usually relative to what's most readily available. However there are certain baits that Sheepshead are attracted to more than others.
    Chapters
    00:01 Intro
    01:10 Live Shrimp
    01:29 Fiddler Crabs
    02:04 Barnacles And Oysters
03:22 Mangrove Crabs And Mud Crabs
    05:37 Hermit Crabs
    06:28 Blue Crabs
    07:09 Store Bought Clams
    07:47 Cranka Crab Lures
    08:19 Sand Fleas
It's vitally important to check your state/county regulations in relation to what types of sea life fishermen can use as bait. If you get caught fishing with something that is illegal you could encounter some hefty fines. For instance shellfish may or may not be harvested in the area you are fishing in Florida. In order to find out if clams or oysters can be taken and used for bait or chum go to this website which the FWC refers seekers to: www.fdacs.gov (I'd suggest calling the "Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services" because the regulations for each county are buried on the website. It requires an abundance of time to try and find out what's legal to harvest or not on the website.) Additionally In Florida Stone Crabs and Hermit Crabs are strictly off limits to use as bait for Sheepshead or any species.
Sheepshead are equipped with an amazing set of teeth so that they can crush various types of shells, crabs and barnacles. They feed mostly on shellfish, crabs and shrimp. For this reason the meat has a mild shellfish shrimp flavor.
Here are a few legal baits that can be used:
    1. Shrimp
    2. Fiddler Crabs
    3. Mangrove Tree Crabs
Here are some illegal marine life species that cannot be used as bait for Sheepshead
    1. Hermit Crabs
    2. Stone Crabs
    3. Oysters (regulated by specific areas in Florida)
    Where to catch Sheepshead
    1. Near any structure that has barnacles
    2. Along grass flats that hold crabs, clams and shrimp
    3. Along Mangrove Tree lines
    4. Near Oyster beds
    5. Under boats that have barnacles attached to the hull
    6. Rock jetties
    7. Just about anywhere along the coast from Mexico to Main and beyond, inshore and off shore depending upon the time of year...
I hope you found the info in this video and description to be helpful in understanding what the most popular and best baits are for targeting Sheepshead. If you buy bait from the grocery stores make sure you keep the recipe and packaging so that you can prove to fwc that you didn’t illegally harvest anything and that it is store bought!

Very informative video on how to catch the beautiful and delicious sheepshead 😍🎣 I really enjoyed the video from start to finish and you got a subscriber here with personalized notifications 😎 I love fishing and live in Titusville. My favorite spot for fishing is Sebastian Inlet, but I'm getting to old for the long drive every weekend, so I NEED to find a good spot because surf fishing in Playalinda is not working for me... Only whitings, sharks and catfish are eating my buffet style baits 😬🧐😁🐠

Thonny a mile and a half from your last mango video. Is a dock. Sits in hole. Surrounded by flats. Scent is powerful. Catch some mud crabs. Cut in half. Put in small freezer bag. Freeze it for future use.
2/0 hook. Add live shrimp. Dip into freezer bag juice. ( can even put on small pieces of crab on ) throw it in. Sheep's can't resist. The Scent draws in the reds and drums off the flats. Can sight cast perfect eating drums 20/22.

Thonny every spot you fish i have fished it over the last 43 years. And some of jc spots. I like what you are doing. In this area your putting out good content. If I was younger I'd start ytube myself. Last video you are looking much more comfortable on the boat. Your learning fast!

Ballast park area. Little bit north. Don't want to give exactly the spot because I'm catching big sno. Read between the lines. Right now Is hot. Bring big pins. Cut top fins off. Or big grunts. Both are working well. I know it's not a spot you fish. Do some homework. Lot of 40 and 42's. It's Close to the ramp that you normally use. Just got to go across the bay

Dude I promise you barnacles are the best. My technique is to take a handful, stomp on them crushing them up and drop them on a piling. Then put 2 or 3 on a hook freelined and drop it down along that piling. I've noticed most the time they pick it up on the way down. Give it a try man!!!

Bloodworms? I harvested them at low tide out on the flats, them used them for bait while fishing with my wife's grampa, That was at Ft. Meyers Beach 50 years ago. Of course, I don't know how devastating the last hurricane was. Just look for the sandy tubes, put them in the bucket and crack open the tube to get the bloodworm. Always caught sheephead with them.

Once someone near you starts using them the Sheepshead won't touch anything else.

I use Octopus from the grocery store the fresh ones you get from the fresco fish market in California great bait
I usually don't use it right away I buy it and bread it into iodized salt lots of it until the meat toughing up where it wouldn't go off the hook 🪝 and I leave it sitting in that salt for a week and then I spray it with salt and garlic mix and then it's ready to use for fishing 🎣
Here you go folks I gaved you my secret recipe DIY bait

I'm pretty sure that blood worms and tube worms work for sheepshead. Tube worms are easy to find on some flats. I remember old timers talking about using them as a kid. Clams probably work but there may be legal restroom like oysters.
