In my limited experience, there isn't as much of a movement/positioning pattern in ponds compared to big lakes but the aggressive feed-up is noticeable. In the pond I fish most of the time they have been absolutely crushing soft plastic swimbaits (such as a Rage Swimmer) for the last 3 weeks or so. This pond is very shallow (2-3 feet) and full of grass, so it limits what you can use...but I caught a 8.6 lb fish out there on a 4.75" green pumpkin Rage Swimmer last week.

Thank you kindly for the insight on the “pre-spaw/spawn” dilemma, for “pond fishing”!
I agree entirely that most content other TH-camrs put out is for the “big boat/big body of water” fisherman. So, this short tutorial was very inspiring for us pond fisherman(that mainly fish from the shore). I can’t wait to get out to my honey holes and rip some lips! Thanks again!!

I feel like Tyler does such a great job at presenting and explaining a topic; that if he were to post a video about how a rock(or whatever random object) can catch you a fish, I would be outside looking for said rock(or whatever random object), without thinking twice. Anyways, great video and keep up the awesome work.

Love your pond videos. I'm primarily a bank angler and I have learned how to flip what all the boat guys are saying to apply it to my ponds. I love that I don't have to do that with your videos. I have the same lipless you were throwing and I had a 9 fish day with it. When I went back to the same spot the next day I caught 5 more. Loving that success thanks to your advice. Keep it up!!

Everything that happens on large lakes happens in ponds but on a smaller scale. Bass also spawn much earlier in ponds because they warm up faster. They also cool down faster so the hot fall bite starts sooner in ponds.

I'm 53 yrs old now, but as a kid and all through my teens I fished ponds all the time, there is one thing I used to do during "prespawn", I would tie on a 1/2 ounce black/blue jig with a craw trailer and and throw it as far as I could out into the middle of the upper section of the pond and fish it back. Depth in a pond is a relative term but let's say down in front of the dam you may have 8 feet maybe 10 and the upper end would shallow up to say 2, 3, maybe even a foot in places, but that mid range in the upper end that averaged about 3 to 4 feet, that's where I would catch my big ones when I knew the spawn was coming, but the temperatures were just not there yet, wich is generally late February, early March, and on an unseasonably warm year could even start in January. Of course this depends on what part of the country you're in. So is there really a prespawn in ponds? Yes or no, I do know that what I just described exists, not gonna get you a ton of bites, but they will be whatever bigger bites the pond has to offer, unless of course you're in better ponds than most of what I was able to fish.

Fantastic vid T! Many of us just fish ponds and don’t have big bass boats. I have a 1.5 acre pond and it holds some giants for OH. Missed a 7-8 2 days ago as I thought I hooked a carp so I didn’t set the hook hard enough! Then realized it was the big girl of the pond and it was to late. I get slammed on big swimbaits, big square bills, and big lip chatter baits. I always go bigger in pre-spawn as I always tend to catch my biggest bass then!! Keep up the great work Tyler jj

Thanks for the pond info! When bank fishing a neighborhood pond and not getting bites, is it better in your opinion to stay put in 1 place, but change baits a few times, or is it better to walk around to different spots with the same bait for a while before changing? Thanks!

  • @farrzmd3038

Thanks for this video. The main pond / lake I fish is a small creek with two dams put in, max depth 6ft that can be cast from bank to bank. Late fall and winter means I can fish treble lures because all the vegetation is gone and I can get by wiht the 4-6ft lures. Moving into spring I fish that 4-6 ‘ depth until I start seeing vegetation sprouting then I switch to 0-3’ treble lures and single hook swim jigs / chatterbaits etc. ... i use a lot of the prespawn videos out there for color ideas and to learn about new lures that can be fished shallow. I still can’t believe red works. Red lipless, craw patterned og tinys have been what’s been working.

A little tuff but still hit when bait is right by them. Spawn time they stay around 4 ft and some a little shallow. Usually when it's cold fish around the dam. Keep up the awesome teaching my brother God bless tight lines maybe we can hook up someday and catch some fish

Thank you Tyler for remembering us bank walkers!!!! I get tired of watching all of the pros who are continually teaching for boat fisherman or how to fish tournaments. I don't have time to deal with a boat or tournaments so if I can get out for an hour at night before the sun goes down at the local/neighborhood pond I'm there and your pond fishing videos have been very helpful!!! Once and a while I can get out to the bigger lakes but bank areas to fish from are limited and highly pressured so I am usually (90% of the time) fishing ponds close to home.

Excellent video! Actually using your videos to help teach my grand-nephew. Thanks!
Please don't take this wrong because it's just a point of clarity, which, doesn't really need to be made, but... a "Pond", is a small, natural body of water typically without a dam.
Most of what we have in Texas are not ponds, but Stock Tanks, or Tanks. These are man-made bodies of water, built for the purpose of watering Livestock. Hence the term, "Stock Tank".
Being from Texas I figure you probably already know this. But for the sake of your subs who may not have known, I thought I would mention it.
Again, Great videos, keep on teaching, and of course, Catching Fish!

    • @TylersReelFishing
