  • Dogs explore the world with their mouths. Knowing how to teach your puppy to leave it can be a potentially life-saving skill, and it's a skill that we teach all of our Grade 1 students to know. Making sure your dog can "leave it" will give you so much more freedom when you're walking your young dog, as well as giving you comfort in knowing that you can avoid some really disgusting situations.

    The "Leave It" exercise is a really valuable skill for any dog! We had fun working on these exercises with Bee-Line, and we've got a couple more fun ones planned to publish soon! "Leave it" isn't working! It feels more like I'm training the dog to "Do the thing that I know I will get a 'Leave It' command and then I get a treat". For instance, I don't want the dog to chew on the TV stand. She'll go chew on the stand on purpose in order to get a treat. She never looks at it and says "Don't do it", she looks at it and says "If I do it and they see me, I get a treat". Seriously frustrating.

    Looks like you have a border collie!
    They are some of the most trainable dogs out there. She picks things up really quickly within minutes.
    I had a bull dog once and it took him training over a few days even to curtail his instinct to lunge for food.
    Border collies make things look so easy!

    The leash is a great idea! Why didn't I think of that 🤦🏻‍♀️ My puppy, who is slowly getting the hang of "leave it," has recently decided to lunge at the item I'm asking him to leave AFTER getting his treat from doing the command. These exercises would make it so much easier for me.

    I love your training videos and they work great 99% of the time, but I had to tweak my training for this one. My puppy is super food-motivated and kept lunging at the Tupperware. I realized that he couldn't make the connection between ignoring treats on the ground and ignoring a little box of treats on the ground. So, I had to repeat the initial steps, this time not with a treat but with the Tupperware of kibble. He still finds it challenging, but he made much more progress once he went through those steps.

    Very helpful, we have an older Border Collie and a recently adopted young Aussie Kelpie (uncivilised!!) & TH-cam has been invaluable! So far, I'd say the most important word she's learnt & that I use, is YES! She LOVES to hear this word (when we first had her besides, She's going back to the Dog's Home; NO!; OMG-No!; OH! NOOOOO! were just about all she must have heard.) She was a nightmare! We were exhausted and at our wit's end! Presently, she is wicked for stealing things she should NOT have - this morning, I was weeding & planting then cooking brekkie - to discover she'd gone thru' my pockets & filched a packet of seeds! Me saying, DROP!, LEAVE IT! Here! NO! none of that worked - I shall now be working on your method & hoping within a few days she will finally grasp this ESSENTIAL concept! Thank you very much for showing clearly how to achieve a potential lifesaver. :)

    Oct 2020. Thanks for thorough explanation of "Leave it" commands. I appreciate the 'multiple scenarios' that you demonstrate that I will come across as I teach my Bailey (3 month old Lab). I have a couple question. As Bailey begins to get the training steps down, when do I stop the training vs, do I repeat the same training for several days. When do I take her outside where there are distractions (keep in mind - I live in New York CIty and there is a different distraction at every step. Another question I have is this -- what do I do when Bailey 'understands' how to get the treat and really anticipates getting the treat and doesn't really get the command down. I have found this when teacher her the commands "sit" and "down." Indoors she follows the command at 90% accuracy (sometimes confusing sit and down). Outdoors, she follows the command at 40% - 80%? I would appreciate your feedback Thomas

    My little Boston Terrier/boxer/lab mix goes crazy over dehydrated sugar free coconut flakes. No clue why but that has become THE treat for training, highest value bar none. He would go crazy, jump and scratch at my closed fist with the coconut flakes.

    These videos are amazing. Thank you !. I've tried this exercise multiple times but am having trouble with our puppy not eating the pea gravel in our yard. It's the place we have for him to go to the bathroom. We have 100÷ supervision but he still picks a few up and eats them. We ended up covering the entire area with landscape fabric so he knows what area to go to the bathroom but can't eat the gravel however, sometimes he finds the gravel and eats it. Any advice ?

    • @rahoolh
      @rahoolh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I agree that most of these videos are amazing but this one isn’t an effective way of teaching the “leave it “ command. We should not reward the dog with the same treat that is on the floor. “Leave it” for the dog should mean he can’t get it at all from the floor. Treats should always come from your hand. So I suggest to treat your dog from your hand after he leaves whatever is on the floor. It worked with my chow which is one of the most difficult dogs to train. Try and let me know. Cheers.

    Not only can the "leave it" command be used to prevent serious harm, but it is also a dog's version of, "don't take things that belong to somebody else, unless that person says it's ok." When I was a tween and teen, and one of our dogs tried to take something of ours, we would use this command, as well as the "drop it," command.
    One time when I was in 2nd grade, I was over at a friend's house after school, and her dog ate my lunch box! Needless to say, this drove me to tears! I even recall telling my friend on more than one occasion, "your dog is a bad dog," to which she would respond, "Leanne, my dog is not a bad dog, it's a good dog!" All the while I was thinking, "yes it's a bad dog, it ate my f***ing lunch box!" I was only 7 at the time, and didn't understand that dogs don't really understand things in the same way humans do. I was simply thinking what I'm sure most 7-year-olds would be thinking in the same situation. All I understood was that I had always been taught not to take things that belonged to someone else, unless that person said it was ok. I was thinking, "if I ate someone else's lunch box, I would just be misbehaving, and given a good, stern talking to!" This is an example of a situation where the "leave it" command would come into play, so that fewer people feel violated by the dog stealing and/or destroying their belongings.

    Thank you for the great training tips. I just adopted a 12 week old puppy who is gaining confidence with her persistence since she came home 4 days ago. She is smart, but I haven't had a dog in 50 years. I'm a bit older and cannot get down on the ground easily with her, so was wondering how I can modify this and other trainings that require being at floor level. Also, I have been using Crazy Dog Train-Me! Training Reward Mini Dog Treats and am afraid to give her too many as the first day, it seemed to cause an episode of diarrhea. What can you suggest as an irresistible treat that won't be too many calories or cause her tummy distress?

    I really loved this all-inclusive guide to teach your pup how to leave something and how to progress from the stationary command that you first initially teach so they learn impulse control!
    One of the things I've been told about introducing the "leave it" command (the first step you showed us, on the floor) was to never let them have the item that you're asking them to leave but to have another treat waiting in your hand and reward them with that one so they understand that they will never be able to get the initial distraction but will receive an amazing payout at the end after making the correct choice. Is that something you agree with? Or do you think it's just another valid method to teaching this life saving command?
    Also, have you done or will make a video on the main "life commands" (commands that could save your pup's life) like "stay", "come" (recall), "stop", "leave it" (obviously you just tackled that one, thanks!) that every dog owner should know? Maybe put together a playlist on it so we can share it with all the pup owners we know? Thanks! Sorry, I know it was a pretty long comment! I love y'alls channel btw!

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey, Karla! Yes, the initial impulse control exercise is a good way to really build some value on you, while teaching the puppy that they get to "choose". It is important to do your best to not let the puppy take the item that you're working so hard to have them "leave". It's not going to ruin your training session, but it is going to make it more challenging for your puppy to be successful since they will see more value in that distraction. With that said, it IS important to work your dog on a distraction that they find IRRESISTIBLE once you have given them a solid foundation of understanding. These real-life challenges are things that you may one day have to face with your dog. And you need to make sure you have proofed even the most challenging distraction with your dog if you are going to call it a "life saving" skill. It needs to be 100% reliable, or it isn't reliable at all. That's a great question though!We do have some of our other skills saved in our Grade 1 Students Playlist: th-cam.com/play/PL7BBgLulherklS42-x1r-a30DcpQhP3X2.html. We have several videos on the topics you mentioned, and when I get a chance I'll try to collect some of them into a playlist. We're almost at 500 videos on the channel now so it may take me a while to go through them all;) I will be sure to put something together for you though! Thanks for watching! ~Ken

    I’m going to also look for “drop it” instruction. In the real world I don’t always see the distraction before the dog does, as for example when it’s in high grass and she smells it but I can’t see it. In those cases I need her to drop it.

    Wow, these videos are hugely helpful, but seems so far beyond reach for us currently. How early does one start this training? We have tiny little 6-week olds. Labrador crossed with staf (we think... somewhat rescue dogs). Are we ready to start these kinds of training exercises yet? We have two puppies.. I guess best to split them up for training time...? Thanks again for the shares!

    My doxie listens to 'leave it' very good. Yes. I'm so proud...if it weren't for the fact that she tries to eat every turd she passes by and I have to say it every 5 seconds during our walks. I'd like her to somehow know that it's better for her to leave it anyway so I don't have to sound like a broken record every time.

    Great video. My dog had a good "leave it" but lately his leave it became like this: I see a distraction, I say leave it, he leaves it and comes with me, I reward him and we continue, only then he just makes a beeline and tries to get to the distraction again. Would it be helpful if i started to refresh the leave it command by just practising indoors again? (started this already but was curious if you had other ideas too)

    My pup Sunny... on the second part of this exercise when she shows self-restraint and I move the food towards her, instead of eating it immediately she mimics me and puts her paw over the food, and looks up at me all pleased with herself. It's very funny. So I've actually inadvertently managed to teach my pup to copy me and hide the food... whoops!

      Hi there, juliesdroidsnyc! In the beginning, we are rewarding the dog for making the choice to leave the food. Once we get up and moving, you see that we start to add the command "leave it" then show the dog what that word means! Thanks for watching! ~Ken

      I have the same trouble with my dog. After a few times you can sometimes tell when she is sniffing something other than the ground. Like her intensity is heightened. The other thing I am going to try is throw a piece of ham in the grass and do the above exercise. Walk past it a few times and do same in another area. Good luck with your dogs x

      @@suebrook655 We did that the last couple months and the dogs now leave stuff alone when we're practicing near food, but will eat it once I don't pay attention on them anymore. Next step is to work on proofing the behavior with my back turned.

      Managing their environment more proactively, shorter leash or no long grass... Or keeping eye contact and engagement instead of nose to the ground when walking through long grass. Preventable with super management and building YOU as higher value than anything else, with way higher value toys or treats 🥰

    It would be really helpful if you were to tell us at what age a dog can start to understand a certain command that you are teaching. I have an 8 week old puppy that we’ve had for 3 days. Is it too early for this? I don’t think he will have any restraint right now but I’m not sure. I just don’t want him to fail.

  • @ginalwolfe5485

    I understand training leave it, but it only works if you know there is something there you don't want your dogs to have. I have 2 husky mix dogs both adopted as adults. They both have really high prey drive and are always walking nose to the ground. The problem I have with "leave it" is that frequently, the first clue I have that there is anything I don't want them eating is when they are already chewing and/or swallowing it. Often they pick up things that either blend in with or are partially or completely covered in grass, dirt, bushes, or snow. I think it's especially hard with the most recently adopted one because he was found as a stray, and picking up anything he could find that was even vaguely edible to eat was a survival strategy for him. I won't go into some of the horrid things I have had to wrestle away from him, but I would really like to know how to overcome that habit that is so deeply ingrained in him. It's really important, because I know all too well what could happen to them. I once had to induce vomiting in both my dogs because one of my neighbors had put rodent poison outside in the open and called me and told me that it had disappeared after I had walked by with my dogs and stopped to chat with her. I never saw the poison and she had no idea when it disappeared, so I never really knew if they had gotten it or not. So, how do I get them to leave something if I don't know it's there?

      Good question, Gina! I only have a moment to reply, but I didn’t want your comment to get lost before I could answer it. There are some activities that you can do with your dog that will help them to have more self control in these situations. Here is a video that will teach your husky mixes to be more thoughtful before diving after something they think is valuable: A Game That Teaches Your Dog Self-Control - th-cam.com/video/G6ixdBkqsWI/w-d-xo.html
      You could do a similar exercise where the food is placed on the ground. Or a toy or a stick or whatever. When they show you the attention, and look to you instead of at the object you can “yes” and reward them. Be sure to have some control by keeping a leash on them while working the exercise so they can’t self-reward by taking the object on the ground. If you’re stopped and chatting you need to make sure your dogs have a job. They should sit and just relax while you have your conversation. They could even lie at your side while you talk with a friend. These are all simple exercises to work on by building longevity into your sit and down when you can focus on training, before you meet someone on your walk. All of these kinds of things will help your dogs to have better self control. There will be instances where their curiosity can get them into trouble. These situations can only be avoided by supervision and awareness. It is important to keep an eye on them any time you’re in an environment that you don’t know is totally safe for them to investigate without your supervision. Hope this helps! Happy Training! ~Ken
